Discussion FSU, Miami, Clemson, UNC Presidents/Chancellors ask Congress to change Protect College Sports Act’s realignment rules
For context purposes, I'd like to remind everyone that the current Chancellor at UNC is a political crony of the gerrymandered NC Legislature. He is finance bro from Duke who is completely unqualified for his job. If he's signing this, it's because the party that controls the NC General Assembly wants him to.

22 team conference. Fuck off

u/TrustInRoy 2d ago
All conferences should be 10 schools or less. You should be able to play home and away with every conference team in basketball every season.

u/StrawberryWaste9040 Iowa State Cyclones 2d ago
And not travel from one coast to another for a game

u/TrustInRoy 2d ago
They should be confined to one time zone (Hawaii and Alaskan schools can be exempt.)
23
u/PurpleOwl6100 Wisconsin Badgers 2d ago
Id give them adjacent time zones.

u/stormstopper Duke Blue Devils • Castleton Spartans 2d ago
Yeah, no reason Wisconsin and Michigan shouldn't be able to share a conference.

The old acc would be the only conference that fits this. All of them cover at least 2 and have for decades if not since their founding

11 teams max, mostly so the BIG can bring back the logo with the hidden 11

This may be controversial, but I’d really, really hate 10 team conferences. There’s no annual schedule variety, it’s an unequal number of conference games a team plays home and away, and teams only get 3 out of conference games.
If anything, I’d rather have 12 team conferences. That way, you get an equal number of home and away conference games, 4 OOC games (allowing much more power school vs power school games without sacrificing G6 and FCS athletic departments), keep annual schedule variety both in and out of conference, keep conference championship games meaningful rather than being a rematch, AND, assuming 6 Power conferences of 12 versus 7 Power conferences of 10, you’d have 72 Power conference teams (plus Notre Dame) rather than 70 (plus Notre Dame).
EDIT: I’m now realizing this is the basketball sub, though. I’d still prefer 12, but with a 22 game round robin like what the Southland does. Also, Notre Dame to the Big East. Please.

u/TrustInRoy 2d ago
OK. New rule then. All conferences go to 10 or less teams, and LSU gives up athletics.

Okay? Not really sure what LSU has to do with this, I was just offering my opinion on the matter. Also, you gotta flair up if you’re gonna talk bad about other schools.
EDIT: Although I am realizing this is the college basketball subreddit lmao. I do think every conference should be 12, but do 22 games so you still get the round robin. Having the round robin, I do agree on

Yk, given the topic of the post and everything, this makes a lot more sense. Thank you for the clarity💀

I don’t like the mega-conferences either, but at least 22 would pretty much ensure that most of the ACC would have a landing spot somewhere in the Big Ten/Big 12/SEC if the four schools in the letter leave and cause a shakeup. It does leave the Big 12 a bit vulnerable, though.

The more amendments get proposed the less chance that Congress passes this in the lame duck session

This could pass in the lame duck but it is very unlikely. Gonna be a shit show with trump throwing a fit and regular legislation is gonna take a back seat.

No way! The b1g/sec want FSU soo bad. Theyre fighting an invisible war to try to get them. FSU football would take over the b1g for sure!

i actually feel like the state gop legislature wouldn’t want him to do this, or at the very least is split on this decision. there’s been attempts to keep unc and nc state together, for athletic and cultural reasons but financial reasons too given they’re all under the unc school system, not letting nc state fall to a lesser conference is important for some in the legislature. i feel like it’s entirely reasonable to believe lee roberts signed this because the athletics department just wants this option available and it’s not because of a larger gop plan

u/DrSnoopRob North Carolina Tar Heels 2d ago
The larger the SEC/B1G are able to expand, the more likely that NC State ends up with a seat at the big boy table. If there are only 4 more slots available (max 19 teams each) between the 2 conferences, NC State is almost certainly out. If there are 6 more slots available (max 20 ea.) then there is only a small chance that NC State makes it. But if there are 10 more slots available (max 22 ea.), then there is a pretty good chance that the NCGA through the BOG can tie NC State moving to one of those conferences to UNC being allowed to move.
It would not surprise me at all if the NCGA/BOG is behind this action from Carolina.

That is a logical and rational argument so there’s now at in hell the state legislatures actually think it sadly.

I’d like to inform folks that the rumors are that said UNC chancellor did not realize he was shutting down entire scholarship programs for Appalachian white kids when he shuttered chapel hills DEI programs and then freaked out about not getting as many applicants from there.

u/TrustInRoy 1d ago
Sounds exactly like something a Republican crony would do.
The general consensus among Tar Heels is that Lee Roberts should be put out on an iceberg and set adrift.
1
u/SideshowCircuits Michigan State • NC State 1d ago
He should. When I say all DEI I do mean ALL. Every single program even substantially related to outreach, support, hospital and clinic programs the whole 9 yards. Cause the university consolidated all programs to save money before he got there.

What’s that? The GOP not understanding the ramifications of legislation/policy they push based on made up social issues? I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked!

This is how we still don’t have a state budget coming on 2 years btw. Fucked over everything so much that now whatever they do will damn a major area of their base so no one wants to pull the trigger.

u/MediumStrange Cincinnati • Michigan 2d ago
There is 0 chance that either the B10 or SEC wants to expand to 22 teams. At 20 I can see grabbing 6 total teams from the ACC that would be attractive, but at 22?

As far as realignment goes, none of that stuff needs legislation…

I doubt that if any changes are made, there will be enough time to get it through the House and then through the Senate again before January 3 - and if it doesn't get to Trump by 12/24, they had better hope that he has forgotten about his promise not to sign any bills before the SAVE America act, as there won't be 10 non-Sundays before Congress adjourns, triggering a "pocket veto" that can't be overridden. Not that the new Congress can't start over from scratch, mind you...
1
u/Unable_Apartment_613 1d ago
This is a strategy that could really scrap the entire thing. Schools making very specific requests to alter the bill directly and publicly with their elected officials. Get the bill to fragment into 20 30 40 different versions. But let's face it, this is the save SEC football act.

Me too!
I'm a lifelong Tar Hell (born in UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill to faculty parents, so I mean that literally) and I love the university and hate what the General Assembly's lackeys are turning it into. I've been rooting against the football team since Belichick arrived. I won't add the basketball team to that, but I will stop watching.

u/cardinaldave79 WKU Hilltoppers 2d ago
As a college basketball fan, it would be unfathomable to see UNC to sacrifice all their in-state rivalries within the ACC to instead play in a half empty Galen Center on a Tuesday night. But hey they’ll get a little extra money! I might be too optimistic but I am not buying they’ll leave the ACC until they do.
2
u/ZealousOatmeal North Carolina Tar Heels 1d ago
The people running the university now have no ties to its history and are pretty much only interested in making big piles of cash, turning UNC into a football school, and funding right wing think tanks. The SEC helps with the first two (and doesn't hinder #3) so it's off we go.

u/knf262 VCU Rams 2d ago
Who’s going to take UNC with their trash ass football program?
3
u/TrustInRoy 2d ago
UNC and the SEC already have a handshake deal in place.
It's the flagship public school of a state the SEC wants a footprint in. And let's be real, UNC athletics is a huge brand.

lol ok. Source?

u/ZealousOatmeal North Carolina Tar Heels 1d ago
There was a claim about the "handshake deal" made last year. It's also the scuttlebutt around Chapel Hill FWIW. Lastly it would fit with the actions of everyone involved, both at UNC and in the SEC.
Charlotte and the Raleigh-Durham Triangle are big media markets (#21 and 22 nationally) and the SEC would love to get what is the #1 college brand in both of those.

I don't really understand the proposed rule requiring power conference teams to spend 3 years as an independent before changing to a new conference...
Like I understand the aim, its to try to hinder all of the realignment. But I don't think that part of it would ever survive a lawsuit. TBH, most of this probably doesn't. What a waste of time.
1
u/BosqueBravo Texas Tech Red Raiders • Duke Blue Devils 2d ago
What exactly do you see as the constitutional basis for disallowing the rule? Because if it’s in a law passed by congress, that’s gotta be your basis for a lawsuit. It’s a very different situation from the ncaa created rules.
1
u/Evening-Spray-4304 Virginia Cavaliers 2d ago
I'm sure the schools can argue that its overly punitive for them. Losing out on conference revenue for 3 years is easily over 100k just from TV deals, and I'm sure there's a lot more from other sources such as conference championships, shares from the NCAA tourney, etc.
I'll admit my ignorance of the minutia of all this, especially with the relationships of schools and conferences. So I guess I overstated that the schools would win, but it certainly would be challenged by the schools pretty quickly. To me it seems like they would have at least a decent case that the rule is a bit arbitrary and would cost them millions in lost revenue in the short term.

u/BosqueBravo Texas Tech Red Raiders • Duke Blue Devils 1d ago
I mean, I guess you could try and argue either a first amendment right of association violation or a fifth amendment due process issue, but I doubt either succeeds. Freedom of association doesn’t mean freedom from any restriction on or regulation of economic activity, and they aren’t making it retroactive so due process is probably fine too.
I doubt there is a challenge, IF it passes. Which is why you see so much lobbying now.
