“Foreign governments might also use the existence of a Canadian espionage agency as a pretext for arresting Canadian citizens and claiming they were spies” – that’s an interesting risk that I didn’t consider.

Well... The way spying actually gets done now a days, they'll just do that anyways.

Didn't stop the Chinese from accusing two guys of being the kind of spies we don't employ as leverage to get a oligarch back.

Boring headline but these experts makes clear there is no utility in Canada setting up its own MI6.

A spy agency at the level Canada would be able to fund it would be more likely to have its operations blow-up in international embarrassment or even torture and death for our operatives.

Via our allies and signals operations we already have more raw info than we can process. We don't need new sources of info coming in when we can't handle those we already have.

I mean, we do have CSIS. I never hear about them so I assume theyre doing... something lol

They are closer to MI5 in the UK or the intelligence divisions of the FBI. CSIS investigates threats to Canada, but they aren't taking any actions against those threats.

•

... who does take actions against those threats?

•

The RCMP if they are in Canada. If they aren't in Canada we politely ask whatever country they are in to do something.

That seems silly to me

CSIS mainly relies on collecting intelligence from domestic and international sources. The CSE collectes signals intelligence by listening to radio, cell and internet transmissions. This article is talking about adding a capability to actively send Canadian spies into other countries under cover, which isn't something we really do.
