People also don't seem to understand the significance of the other referendum questions. Opening up constitution amendments is another stepping stone to separation. If we are already amending the constitution why not just make it easier for Alberta to unilaterally declare independence as well.

If we are amending the constitution we can amend it to redesign alberta as the 10 miles along the USA border. The only thing keeping the boundaries of "alberta" intact is the constitution. And most of alberta is treaty land.

The second question is meant to confuse the voters. Those questions should not even be on the ballot.

The Premier relaxed a variety of rules to push her seperatist agenda.

Yeah I know, that is why I called the RCMP and reported it when they first discussed it.

Too bad nobody seems to give a damn.

Trudeau's questionable policies? Treason apparently.

Colluding with a country who's leader wants to make us the 51st state? No, that's not treason, because reasons.

Wonder how many of those trucker protest guys in Ottawa waving around the Canadian flag wouldn't mind if the US took us over?

Backwards-ass world.

If people colluded with foreign government officials with the intention of breaking up our country… by what definition is that not treason?

I have been asking separatists for fucking months, since Rath so boldly announced that he'd secured a promise of funding from the US, how much money, what were the terms of the loan/line of credit (they never clarified which one) and what Rath had offered for collateral.

Not one of them ever had an answer, well, other than to call me names, acted like it was a great thing, and then tried to pretend it never happened.

We all knew what was on the table. I'm relieved that this story has finally broken, and it's so much worse than we realized.

There's no way Smith didn't know.

Just based off the headline. I think that is the mission statement, isn't it?

If Alberta Ricans don't think they aren't going to end up as a territory, they are truly lost.

This was never in doubt to anyone paying attention to the Alberta separatist movement, it’s always been based in this desire to follow the Christian nationalist movement in the US.

The UCP playbook has been taken straight out of Republican states like Florida. Fact is, if you go back and re-read the Alberta Charter produced by the UCP after Smith first assumed power, it would seem they’ve been preparing us to become an American territory since the start.

The new Alberta sheriffs, the pension fight, healthcare, education, bow to separatists all policies in line with their Republican counterparts.

How anyone can look at their actions since taking power and not see the UCP has been a separatist party since Smith took office? We’ve spent more on propaganda targeting Albertan voters than the previous three governments combined. This is including the Kenney government which at the time set the record for ad spending in Alberta, a record Smith has since shattered.

Albertans are paying to gaslight themselves into ignoring the reality we can see playing out in front of us.

I've said a long there is no such thing as an Alberta separatist. This isn't Quebec, where there's this defensible and historical notion of nationhood. These are nothing but a bunch of libertarians, SoCons and cranks who imagine swapping their CDN for greenbacks as a reward for handing over Alberta to the United States.

Brother, now when you talk to them, they don't really want to seperate, they just want to "send a message" to Ottawa. Words don't explain how asanine this whole thing is.

I'm not a separatist, but I bet you are from East of Saskatchewan.

Vancouver Island. We have our own brand of pro-51st stater in BC, more marginalized (so far) but every bit as enamored with America.

but every bit as enamored with America.

SO why don't they just fuck off to the USA if they think it's so great?

They have no education or skills that would make them eligible for a visa

I live in Saskatoon and work in the oil sands, I'll second what u/GraveDiggingCynic said.

I know a few Albertan separatists. My Dad, one of my uncles and one of their friends. They are all in their 70's.

They are also not from Alberta, have never lived in Alberta, nor ever will live in Alberta (Two are in Ontario, one is in Nunavut). They are cheering on Albertan separatism mainly because conservatism is a big part of their identity, and right now the farthest reaches of the conservatism spectrum are cheering on Alberta separating.

It's exhausting.
