I love Ian Happ in my bones. Whatever happens, I support him. Good man. Good teammate, Good voice for players. Thoughtful always. Hitting sometimes. Getting on base as much as anyone. That’s my dude. He’s been a great Cub.

This guy roots gets it. Happ has been a great Cubs player and a genuinely good dude to root for all these years.

1

u/facedownbootyuphold Colorado Rockies 1d ago

I see a lot of Cubs fans hating on him, what's the deal?

3

u/Trick-Stranger4596 1d ago

Can’t say for everyone, but he was really good at times while also struggling occasionally. He was borderline elite for short stretches, which raised expectations and then he’d fall off. Overall his annual stat lines were above average and pretty consistent, so a very solid hitter and a good defender. But following the WS and playoff run his peaks were never as high as the guys he followed.

21

u/thepalmtree Chicago Cubs 1d ago

You said it perfectly. Happ kept showing up when it mattered and that is all you can ask from a guy. Respect.

3

u/Omnipootent 2d ago

Would be a great platoon at this point in his career for us, but I hope we find a left field stud that we sorely need with our lineup of plus defense minus bat everywhere else, and he finds another starting gig somewhere. Doesn't feel right but thats baseball

4

u/dilapidated_wookiee Chicago Cubs 1d ago

Sorely need with our lineup? We sorely need pitching, the lineup is fine

-1

u/Omnipootent 1d ago

We need pitching more than a stud bat to complement PCA and Bregman (and maybe seiya if he returns), but another stud in left goes a long way to help us snap out of the funks our offense goes in like the one at the end of the year. It was a streaky offense that could use more stability and more of a fear factor in the playoffs, so michael Busch can bat 5th instead of third, since he pretty much sucks these days

5

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

Where is that left field stud gonna come from? The free agent market for OF is weak this offseason and our minor league bats are a couple years away.

2

u/Omnipootent 1d ago

True, maybe take a swing on the NPB guy Sato, though its risky. Not much else out there unfortunately, but a three true outcomes guy can be welcome in this lineup. If not, id prefer platooning happ than starting him everyday, he is miserable against lefties

1

u/ThoreaulySimple 1d ago

Exactly my sentiments. I hope he finds a good fit, whether that’s here for two-ish more years or elsewhere. I liked watching him play and he seems like a good guy on top of it.

I was really excited in 2017 when he came up. I think he handled being sent down really well too. He's a grinder. I will always have a place in my heart for someone that will put in the work and be a team player

To me, he's been in a way this indirect link to the WS team. I would hate to lose him. As a lot of people have said, I'd be fine with a team friendly contract. I'd go with a 2 year with a 3rd year as a team option.

20

u/CubsEnjoyer 2d ago

Happer has cubbie for life status no matter if he's going to continue with the cubs or if he's going to be playing with another org.

10

u/shiloh88 Helmet Hands 1d ago

If he comes back, I'd probably want to be in the conforto role and commit to left handed hitting.

35

u/blyzo Chicago Cubs 2d ago

His down year this year he still put up almost 3 WAR. Probably going to get his 4th straight Gold Glove in Left Field.

If he would do like 3/50 I would definitely resign him. I think he'll probably get better offers but I dunno. Probably the most underrated OF in baseball.

Plus he's just a great all around dude.

9

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

Yup. And 107 wRC+ on a down year, which is above league average. And, for example, much better than Kyle Tucker’s 2026.

But if you look at just his PAs batting left, Happ had an .809 OPS, 125 wRC+. His struggles against righties this year brought down his overall numbers. Career, he’s much closer to league average from the right.

16

u/AdditionalNewt4762 Chicago Cubs 2d ago

He is literally everything you could ask for. Shows up game after game. Puts up solid ass numbers(a bit down this yr maybe), plays GG defensive every yr. Interacts w/fans on a personal level. Dude is truly an all time Cub great.

4

u/Margoth_Rising 1d ago

You could nitpick and find some stats that are down but overall it was a average year for Happ. Not really up or down just average. Nothing really sticks out to me other than career high in SO.

4

u/fastassbluegras 1d ago

Lotta blue in that graph

2

u/fastassbluegras 1d ago

2

u/Margoth_Rising 1d ago

I was responding to Happ having below average year for him. If Happ is above/below average league hitter is another conversation entirely.

9

u/epilepticninja Chicago Cubs 1d ago

Him and seuya are both rock stars. There are no upgrades available fir L or R field. Y'know go get some some pitching Jed

6

u/FreeBricks4Nazis 1d ago

This man should retire in Cubbie's blue

12

u/Glittering-Local-147 1d ago

Great dude, 0 clutch

3

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

Career with bases loaded: .250/.365/.441.

Career late & close (baseball-ref) .238/.327/.460.

Career High leverage (Fangraphs): 135 wRC+

Career w/RISP (Fangraphs) 119 wRC+.

5

u/Glittering-Local-147 1d ago

0.193 with RISP this year

1

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

Right. But you said zero clutch. Down year in 2026. Yet still 99 wRC+ with RISP, so just about league average. 124 wRC+ with RISP batting left.

Batting from the right side was awful this season and dragged his overall numbers down much more than usual.

3

u/vegazhighroller 1d ago

He’s a platoon player. Stats don’t lie

7

u/Usual_Swordfish_19 1d ago

If you mean to say the team is ok but can't be elite, I'd agree.

13

u/Wrath0920 1d ago

I don’t get the deep rooted love for the guy. I get that he was a great teammate and that for sure has value, he played excellent defense, also an asset. But he was not and never was a star. He never was a a stud who lead the team to success on the field. Actually, it was other players who had to make up for Happ’s lack of production. I’m not saying he was detrimental to winning games, but I also dont think he is not easily replaced in the production category. They need more from a corner OF spot than he is capable of giving.

9

u/garlic-and-onion 1d ago

You don’t have to be a “star” to be loved by fans.

10

u/Hurm 1d ago

You don't understand people liking a guy fir being a good person?

5

u/SinkNSlide3345 1d ago

My pastor is a good person but I bet he would suck at playing MLB

1

u/Hurm 1d ago

But does he love Ezekiel 23:20? That's how you tell!

2

u/theporter75 1d ago

Agree, I despise Happ and Shaw for very different reasons, one because he sucks at the plate the other because he sucks as a human.

2

u/hounddoger 1d ago

You have to be a star to earn love?

2

u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 1d ago

Yep. Also, I don't get why people act like him being good only against righties is a good thing. He's above average at best when you carve off half of his stats.

-2

u/dilapidated_wookiee Chicago Cubs 1d ago

Above average bat with great defense is a valuable player lol you can't have 9 PCA's out there

5

u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 1d ago

103 OPS+. “Above average” is pushing it.

His bat is worse than the two guys behind him: Taylor and Conforto.

He has blocked our OF prospects for years.

1

u/dilapidated_wookiee Chicago Cubs 1d ago

As a lefty he is considerably above average and he has not blocked anyone of merit lol

0

u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 1d ago

If you have to carve off half of his stats to make him look good I think that proves my point

-1

u/JZobel El Mago 1d ago

lol blocked all our outfield prospects for years…if only we’d been playing Canario, Velazquez, Caissie, Alcantara this whole time. None of em have done jack shit

Taylor and Conforto have good numbers because they’re strictly platoon. If they had as many ABs as Happ, they’d struggle

You people just want a shiny new toy you can delusionally map any ceiling you want onto because a guy who’s steady every year but not a star is too boring for you

3

u/Wrath0920 1d ago

If those are the only options, sure, gimme Happ. Ever hear of free agency? Trades?

1

u/I-I_I-I_I-I_l-l 1d ago

Are you being serious? Cassie just had a better first year than PCA did

3

u/JZobel El Mago 9h ago edited 9h ago

Negative WAR, he sucked for the most part. I expect the bat to get better as his career goes on, but he’s a defensive liability and has big K problems. He would’ve been public enemy #1 for whiny cubs fans if he was playing everyday for us. Not even remotely close to the player Happ is at this point

1

u/JZobel El Mago 1d ago

This mindset is part of what sucks about sports fans a lot of the time. As if the only player you could ever appreciate or love has to be a superstar. Happ has been grinding for this team and this city for a decade, always been a productive player every year, always been a professional. That’s worth appreciating.

0

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

You don’t understand how people can love a player who’s not Aaron Judge-levels of elite? Really?

2

u/Wrath0920 1d ago

Did I mention AJ at all? Wow talk about grasping for straws. Happ is a decent player. That’s all he is, in terms of production.

0

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

It was implied. You said he was never a star. So I assume you’re talking about a top 10 player in baseball. Like an Aaron Judge. Pete Crow-Armstrong, etc. Happ has certainly been a perennial top OF in baseball.

2

u/Wrath0920 1d ago

He has NEVER been a perennial top OF, lol. He’s been a great defensive player. Solid guy. He has made one all star team. He’s a nice player. “Perennial top” implies something he never has delivered.

5

u/Yetis22 1d ago

I love Happ. Just an easily likable dude.

I could see him coming back next year at a team deal. But I also think he’s going to explore his options because of the fact that he doesn’t want to platoon. Which I think if he came back, he’d only play majority vs righties.

I could see a lot of teams interested in him to. Such as a team like the Whitesox. Veteran presence. Doesn’t have to uproot. Goes to a team on the rise. OR (gross) LAD. Imagine Happ hitting 6 to 9 in that lineup. I think the biggest problem ever with the cubs is Happ was always hitting 1-5. If you put him a little lower and he is the 3 outcome hitter, I think he would be elite in a lineup like LAD.

11

u/MithrandirHabibi 2d ago

He’s been a solid cub, but this is major hyperbole

9

u/lykathea2 Bae 2d ago

I think for a lot of newer fans post 2018 or so, Ian is that guy for them. I don't cherish him as much as the 2015 and 2016 teams or Rizzo or MVP KB or Javy or even Schwarber for coming back from injury to play in the world series. Even for modern guys hes not PCA, Nico, Shota or Seiya in terms of entertaining me. He has great stats and moments and had a solid career, but nothing like 2015-16.

17

u/z_o_i_n_k_z Stupid Sexy Rizzo 2d ago

I love Ian but I agree.

Rizzo was the Cubs and they traded him away for scraps.

I still love the Cubs, but I’ll never love a team like I did the core of that 2015-2016 Cubs run. It hasn’t felt the same for me since the deadline where they gutted the whole team.

This year’s group, despite all the pitching woes, was the closest feeling I’ve had to that team.

But that’s probably just because of PCA lol

1

u/atooraya Will be triggered if downvoted 2d ago

Javy was our PCA during that run. Rizzo was what Ian Happ may be to some because Rizzo was the first piece for Theo Epstein to rebuild the Cubs.

That team also felt so good because the pitching was so damn good. I wish I could feel as good about a trade deadline as I did when we got Chapman.

5

u/SoupAlternative1 1d ago

Dont even put Happ in the same sentence as Rizzo. Happ is a poor man's Rizzo if anything

5

u/OpportunityOk5362 2d ago

I’ll be sad to see him go play elsewhere. Hopefully not the reds. He’s also been the one player who’s been in the lineup every season since 2018 when we started to go cold as an team at the end of the season. I’m not saying there’s any correlation, but it’s best for everyone involved to try something new.

6

u/KRATS8 1d ago

If Im the reds or pirates Im taking a chance on happ for sure

2

u/According_Turn_3473 1d ago

It would be fun to see him on the Reds!

2

u/CarlySimonSays Let's play two 1d ago

I mean, if he goes anywhere, I kinda hope it's the Reds or the Pirates. I think he'd do well on both of those teams, even if I won't like facing him there, lol.

2

u/EmmThem 1d ago

I don’t think we should let him walk, personally. I don’t think he’ll be crazy expensive, he was a big part of statistically the best defense ever. We need to worry about keeping what we have on the field and worrying about pitching. Unless there’s an obvious upgrade available, I don’t see how letting him go helps the Cubs.

0

u/CarlySimonSays Let's play two 1d ago

I agree, I don't see how we get a left-fielder just half as good as he is, for a ton less money than he's likely to ask for. The man's arm is worth it.

3

u/Own-Pickle9871 1d ago

If he is the Chicago Cubs it might explain a lot.

1

u/milin85 Pat 1d ago

Ian is akin to Cole Kmet for me.

Good player. Even better guy.

-1

u/NUMBNUTZ42069 Lester 1d ago

He’s done way more in his career than Cole Kmet

1

u/Clear-Cut-4398 1d ago

Happ will sign a team friendly contract. Look at the list of available Free Agents next year. Seiya is top dog….

1

u/pisaudapur Arr-Field 1d ago

wow, reading his 3-year contract get announced in 2024 alongside Nico felt like it happened yesterday and now it's here

-1

u/Visible-Kangaroo-305 1d ago

I love me some Ian Happ!! One more year!

1

u/TidyJoe34 1d ago

An average player that’s hyped up to be better than he actually is?

3

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

Actually, much better than average. 115 wRC+ for his career.

1

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

Bring Happ back. He’s the type of player I want to root for on my team.

1

u/WhatsupDoc35 1d ago

I really love Happer and I agree he is the type of player you want to root for. He has had a great run for the Cubs. Not sure he is right for this team in the future unless he will take a team-friendly deal and is willing to platoon.

1

u/BlindLantern 1d ago

Why couldn’t we sign him again for a few more years?

7

u/fastassbluegras 1d ago

Bottom 10% for strikeouts. You want that back?

-4

u/NUMBNUTZ42069 Lester 1d ago

Damn Sox should drop Murakami

4

u/JF1449 1d ago

Insanely stupid comment, Munetaka hit 35 homers this year

0

u/NUMBNUTZ42069 Lester 1d ago

He’s bottom 10% for strikeouts and hit .207.

He’s a great player. I was making a joke.

-2

u/BlindLantern 1d ago

I like a heart and soul guy. I think he played well enough for a reasonable deal.

2

u/fastassbluegras 1d ago

Vibes win championships should be a new shirt

-1

u/BlindLantern 1d ago

Yeah. I guess we can’t agree to disagree? Oh, well.

6

u/jarhead1292 1d ago

Because of his numbers.

1

u/Old_General_6741 Chicago Cubs/Canada 1d ago

Sign him. He is a good teammate. He may not be a star but in my opinion he is still great.

1

u/ItsGonnaBeAToughPlay 2d ago

My heart and brain are so split on this. If we won it all next year, it would really suck to see his Cubs career bookended by two World Series he wasn't a part of.

-4

u/gmoney32211 1d ago

We arent winning it all with cheapass Ricketts anytime soon. He got his wallet out for a onetime ride in ‘16, happy for that but zero indication of effort going forward

1

u/RunAwayBeerTruk 1d ago

Ian Happ is…ok. Not bad not great just okay. Kind of like the Cubs, just okay.

1

u/PeteStrongArm 1d ago

4 gold gloves is better then just ok

1

u/ACTSATGuyonReddit 1d ago

He is the Cubs. He puts on a good show, but ultimately he doesn't win.

2

u/KnickedUp 1d ago

He is the perfect face of the last 9 yrs

u/DJaySteff 1d ago edited 1d ago

You guys are really weird with this dude. He played for a long time here…that’s really it.
Hes not very good. Can’t hit and is slow in the outfield, don’t really care if he’s a gold glover.

8

u/NUMBNUTZ42069 Lester 1d ago

I think acting like he is bad is just as weird as the people who think he’s great.

2

u/DJaySteff 1d ago

There needs to be a middle ground for sure. I’ll agree.

I don’t understand the attachment to him as a player. Maybe it’s the younger fans?

5

u/NUMBNUTZ42069 Lester 1d ago

I’m not a younger fan. I like Happ because he’s been on the team for a decade and is pretty drama free and consistent year in and year out. I’m also not someone begging the Cubs to de sign him. But he was here long enough to be remembered fondly and they will so ceremonies and video montages when he returns and probably be in the a cubs hall of fame when he retires

1

u/DJaySteff 1d ago

Why do you feel he is a Cubs hall of famer? Just because his tenure here? That’s where I’m confused.

Is Alfonso Soriano a Cubs HOFer to you?

3

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

Happ has better numbers in his career than Soriano had as a Cub. But also, there’s a difference when a dude is drafted by the team and has played every single game as a pro for the same team.

2

u/WhatsupDoc35 1d ago

He was just voted in by the fans to the 150 Anniversary roster. That say a lot to me.

2

u/NUMBNUTZ42069 Lester 1d ago edited 1d ago

A decade and he’s top ten (jk he’s 11th) in home runs all time. The organization loves him and included him on the 150 year team

1

u/chrisGNR Chicago Dubs 1d ago

I’m in my 40s and he’s my favorite Cub right now. But I’ve actually liked this core group a lot (Dansby, Nico, Happ, Seiya, and now Pete).

-5

u/teh_business 1d ago

Keep him in the bigs all year in 2019 and we make the playoffs
