Hello and welcome to another objectively correct take from the guy whose takes you hate.
You are still wrong about encore machines btw, nothing changed there.
And if you disagree with this take, just to be completely clear - you are once again completely wrong.
So what do I mean by the title?
I mean that everything related to enemy design that was deemed potentially annoying to the players experience got sanded down and that made the experience significantly worse.
In essence - enemies got dumbed down big time.
You see, i've been replaying previous titles and lemme give you a list of potentially annoying mechanics and stuff that we lost as of borderlands 4. Some deleted entries will be reasonable, while some will be absolutely dumbfounding.
The list:
Humanoid enemies used to prioritise getting behind cover. (And tediore dudes in fl4k dlc didnt fix that)
Humanoid enemies used to dodge roll sometimes when shot at.
Enemies used to crouch to throw off your aim.
Enemies used to have weakpoints that werent their head.
We used to have healers and buffers (surveyors bl2)
Kamikaze enemies used to drop their grenades in the direction they were moving if flinched (so generally in players direction)
We used to have enemies spawning more regular enemies (and not piss easy witnesses)
Enemies used to have random equipment just like player (so elemental weapons, elemental shields etc.)
Enemies used to have multiple weakpoints.
Getting hit by melee enemies used to rock player so hard they couldnt properly aim, and knock them back from melee range so they cant just hit back.
Enemies used to have destructible limbs which affected gameplay (loaders)
We used to have singularity enemies
Enemies used to have parts that deflected bullets back
Enemies with Guns used to keep attacking you if just Walked in their face and did nothing (go ahead and test what happens if you just walk at a ripper with a gun)
Enemies used to have shields covering over 90% of their body from one direction.
Enemies used to be able to deploy indestructable shields. (I mean they couldnt be destroyed by just shooting at them)
Enemies used to have different behaviour based on destroyed limbs (loaders, goliaths)
Suicide bombers used to yeet multiple grenades at you before running to kill themselves.
We used to have whole kind of invisible enemies.
We used to have enemies that would steal look and ammo.
We used to have enemies that would significantly buff themselves if not killed fast enough (varkids)
We used to have extra agresive extra strong rabid enemies.
Enemies used to debuf the player (slow them down, multiply damage taken etc.)
Flying enemies used to move Faster than a snail resulting in them being hard to hit instead of just an easier target.
And finally - enemy factions used to use different strategies and spawn in different ways.
The list is probably in no way completed. Feel free to add your own points.
Anyway, this whole sanding away resulted in every single enemy just being a different flavor of punching bag that sometises attacks back.
We do have shielded enemies but their shields can break in a couple of shots so that is worthless.
We have flying ones but they are just easier targets.
We dont have any enemies that actually feel like a priority target.
We dont have any enemies that force the player to adjust the way they play.
No - aim better for the shield gap, no walk into their reach to kill them cause of shield, no kill them Quick so they stop spawning shit, no get away from them so they wont demolish you, no move in cause they hide behind cover, no shoot them in the face to make them attack everyone. No shoot of their grenade arm so they cannot Chuck nades anymore.
And what we ended up with is two main factions that feel exactly the same. Enemy modification system that makes them feel even more same.
And generally boring encounters cause its just a matter of hitpoints and dps.
No real non numbers related mobbing challenges.
No interesting encounters (do you even have 1 stand out encouter with the mobbing in whole bl4? Not talking narrative, pure gameplay. Im asking cause after hundreds of hours i can safely say i dont. But I still remember toilet room from bl2 vividly).
Take over for today. You can start to applause my commitment now.
Ill Make part 2 - deeper dive tommorow. And propose fixes the next day.
See ya.
Edit: almost forgot
26. Enemies used to run away from you And still shoot you after you enter FFYL, and now they stand and make sure you can hit them easily (they do a little dance, which while really fucking funny is still bad design wise)
