Rules and Info (Updated)

Welcome to The Betterment Book Club!

This is the place to discuss self-improvement type books with like-minded people. The goal is to increase our discipline and self-worth, by understanding ourselves better.

How It Works

We want to read YOUR summaries, thoughts and questions on books you have read. Here are the basic rules:

  • Use bullet points, be concise and respectful
  • No clickbait in title, be descriptive
  • No referral links or advertising
  • If you post/quote a text written by someone else, please state the source.

'Self-help' literature is often critisized for repetitiveness, parroting platitudes and being too general to apply to anything specific. To combat this, focus on actionable advice found in the books and share your experience with applying such methods or mindsets to your life.

You are allowed to include links to your blog, youtube video, etc. However, you may not link directly to a sales page, such as Amazon. If you are promoting your own content, or even your own book, do it in the nicest way possible, by providing value to others and contributing to the discussion. Don't just drop a link on us.

Want to discuss a book you have read? Feel free to use this book summary template:

**Book title/author/year:**
**Summary:** (Topics? Practical advice the book recommends? Chapter-by-chapter summary?)
**Review:** (Did you follow advice from the book? Criticism or praise for the author?)
**Rating:** (Was it worth reading?)
**Recommendation:** (Who should read this book?)
**Question:** (What is there to discuss? What would you ask others who have read this book?)

Reading helped me focus on what is important

Hey folks!

I don't read, until a couple of months ago.

I've noticed how I am unable to focus for longer sessions, or just be in a state of boredom without some kind of stimulation, which is information to me. X, Linkedin, and Instagram are feeding to my interests in AI, travelling etc.

I removed the access to apps on my mobile, and decided that I will borrow books from my wife (who is an avid reader for more than a decade now) - Atlas Shrugged, and Brothers Karamazov. She complains about the book moby dick - but she finished it eitherways and hates whale stories now.

Reading atlas shrugged helped me calm down, be in present, focus and get more done and sleep in the night.

I just thought I want to write about "How I met and building a habit called reading"

Thanks
VKK

Hi! Does anyone know any good books for improving quick thinking?

I feel like I’m a slow thinker, and a lot of the time I understand or think of things a few seconds later. It honestly annoys me, so I’d like to improve my thinking and reaction speed. I’d really appreciate any book recommendations.

Using the alphabet to improve memory

The alphabet can be used to improve memory. There are seven or more ways to do it. You can turn any letter into something familiar and then use it to memorize information. For example:

A - Apple

B – Banana

C – Carrot

D – Dragon fruit

E – Eggplant

F – Flat peach

G – Grapes

H – Husk tomatoes

And so on. You can then use these images to remember information. Simply visually associate what you wish to remember with the alphabet images.

There's a book that teaches you how to do this. It's called "Improve Your Memory Using 7 Alphabet Systems: The ASMR³ Method for Visual Mnemonics." ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HKVJ56Y8 )

It's similar to how a memory palace would work, but you don't have to think about new places all the time. For some people, these systems are more vivid than mind journeys.

With 7 systems, it means you can, potentially, remember over 150 distinct items.

Men - nonfiction book reccs for your girlfriend/fiance? (31F/33M)

My partner requested that I find a book to learn about how to respect your partner better. While this sounds a bit sexist, I'm curious to learn more as there are many books about women's perspectives, I want to also understand the world of men a bit better. We've already read some of the gottman's fight right book and other miscellaneous books.

Books about slowing down &moving with intention

I'm looking for a book that compels the reader to slow down in their life rather than moving at the speed of 'go-go-go'. Especially interested in reading and exploring intentional choices with body and mind to find betterment. Snail energy, essentially 🐌

Any books come to mind that brought up those feelings for you?

I'll be in nature this weekend, so nature themed suggestions are encouraged! Ideally the audiobook will be 8 hours or less. 💞 Thanks for sharing your favorites!

What usually stops you from applying ideas from self-improvement books?

When you read a useful self-improvement or productivity book, what usually happens afterwards?

I often find that a book gives me a useful idea, but actually applying that idea in real life is much harder.

I’m curious about other readers’ experience:

  • Do you usually take notes or highlight ideas?
  • Do you actually try to apply them?
  • If not, what normally gets in the way?
  • Have you found any method that helps you turn ideas into action?

I’m interested in real experiences rather than book recommendations.

Thoughts on 'With God in Russia'

I was recommended this book with the fact that it is similar to Man's Search for Meaning. However, in the beginning, it did not seem interesting to me, but it gradually became what I was looking for. The book turned out to be a profound book for me personally. Interestingly, I had also read a short book, Why I Am an Atheist, by the Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and the two books present very different perspectives on God and spirituality, I found it interesting to read both and reflect on how people find meaning and strength in difficult circumstances.

Now, about the book: the author mentioned the "divine providence of God" and also some instances where he was nearly killed, for instance, two times when he was working on some kind of electrical work and a couple of times in the mine. I want to know other people's thoughts on these two points.

What significance does this book hold for a spiritual person, and does it hold something for a non-spiritual one as well? According to me, for a spiritual person, it would make their belief even stronger in their religion and their God. For a non-spiritual person, the book can inspire them through the author's perseverance and his dedication to his goal amid all the hardships and hopeless circumstances.

So, according to me, the book has something for a person regardless of whether they are spiritual or non-spiritual.

What are your interpretations and thoughts about the book?

Poor Charlie’s Almanack: knowing a mental model and remembering to use it

After reading Poor Charlie’s Almanack and more about Munger, I noticed an awkward gap: I could explain some of the ideas, then forget to use them when I actually had a problem.

Inversion was a useful example. I knew what it meant. While writing about Munger, I finally tried asking how I could write a bad essay, then used that question to look at what I was doing.

A few things I’m taking from that:

- I’d rather practice using one model than collect another list of models I recognize.

- My notes aren’t evidence that I’ve understood something well enough to use it. I’ve kept notes in Apple Notes since 2023, and they accumulate faster than I revisit them.

- Reading more is appealing partly because it’s easier to count than thinking carefully about something I already read.

I still enjoy collecting ideas. I just want a few of them to become part of how I work.

For people who have read the book, which idea actually changed a decision you made? And what helped you remember to use it at the right moment?
