Rats are similar, 2 to 4 years. People say they are great because they can be affectionate and almost as smart as dogs. I can’t imagine letting myself get deeply emotionally attached to an animal that only lives that long.

That’s always tripped me up about hamsters.

My dad really bonded with my sisters hamster and didn’t realize their lifespan was so short.

It messed him up for a while, even as a middle aged man…plus I’ve never heard a hamster death story that wasn’t traumatizing asf.
