Donkeys are incredibly smart. Donkey is usually associated with dumb and stubborn, but really, they are stubborn because they think whatever you want from them is stupid and they refuse to do it. Not because they can't, it's because they just decide they don't want to.

I Met a lot of horse people that hate donkeys and think they are genuinely stupid. I have 3 donkeys:

  • First one came from a reputable breeder, she's a sweetheart and she has superior social skills.
  • Second one came from the worse kind of horse people, the dickheads that think that a unreliable, semi-wild horse is for real men. They unloaded the poor thing like it was a piece of meat, he was terrified. He's young and playful and curious and incredibly smart.
  • Third one came from an old man that kept him alone in a field, he arrived untrained, not cooperative, almost wild. He still trusts only me, but he's the most sweet and cuddly thing in the world, it took one entire year to make him open and it was worth it.

I love animals, and sometimes I hate people. Glad you could help these derserving babies.

34

u/Phat_Squid83 15h ago

I’m in that same boat. I love animals, when it comes to other humans, after 43yrs, that one remains debatable.

2

u/TheG0AT0fAllTime 6h ago

I've actually transitioned to hating people most of the time these past few years. A lot of them are awful to animals and each other.

20

u/rathe_0 12h ago

that's horrible to hear the ones who seem to have been solitary. Donkeys NEED at least one companion or they'll be depressed to death eventually.

just like us.

u/Disastrous_Snow_7300 11h ago

My boy Merlin is ok now, he's just a bit rebellious when it's time to trim his hooves!

7

u/rathe_0 11h ago

a bit of rebellion is healthy 😂

4

u/Paladine36 3h ago

yep growing up we had a donkey we named Old Sam that was the Guard of the Farm lol

he would protect everyone or anything once he accepted you as a part of his "family"

Old fucker would lie in ambush to attack coyotes that would try to eat our chickens

always still hear his Laugh when I think back on my younger years

miss him

u/REDACTED3560 2h ago

There’s stories of donkeys killing mountain lions going after sheep.

2

u/Gwubwick 11h ago

We demand to know their names 📢

As the past owner of a) a golden Labrador and b) a Jack Russell terrier, I've never understood the obsession about obedience that humans have when judging an animal's intelligence.

My Jack Russell had no interest in obeying me-unless it was worth his while. He was as bright as a tack-and somehow always got his own way. He went about his business in a clever, rather sidelong way, never getting into any unnecessary trouble. I have no idea how clever the Labrador was: he only wanted to please and was 100% obedient. People used to say: "oh! Isn't he clever!": something nobody ever seemed to say about the Jack Russell.

But things rarely went the Lab's way if he was in rivalry with the terrier.

We've had a westie for wonderful 15 years. Our goal was to have a good companion and just spoil them because that's what pets are for. They bring as joy and we spoil them and give them all the luxury we can. We never trained her or taught her a single thing, she just turned out to be the most lovely, polite puppy in the world all by herself. She also didn't do the whole chomping on pellet food like all the big dogs do as training "reward", so I'd have to train her using finest meat cuts or else I'd not train her at all lol. I also didn't want a dog with pedigree from the get go. Not only they are expensive for no reason just because they got bunch of stupid awards, but just why? I did want a westie because they are so adorable and have such low maintenance fur, their character is also so lovely. They are so incredibly friendly but also rebellious like donkeys. :)

4

u/Plumb789 11h ago

How lovely. Reminds me of the dog we have now. She lives such a charmed life.

8

u/EffectiveAd3161 5h ago

Jack Russells are the perfect proof that intelligence and obedience are two completely different things, because sometimes the smartest dog in the room is the one pretending not to hear you

3

u/Plumb789 4h ago

I agree 100%. I did a hilarious experiment with my JR. There was an article in a newspaper that said you can test your dog's IQ by throwing a towel over its head. The quicker it get out from under it-the more intelligent the animal.

I took a towel and put it over my JR's head. He stopped completely still. I waited, he waited. I waited some more-and he just stood there, stock still. It had become a duel of wills, and sadly, that meant we both knew how that was going to end.

I took the towel off his head. He glared at me. I said sorry. He walked away, still giving me the side-eye. "I'm not angry at you", his look said. "Just disappointed".

That was not a stupid dog.

u/JennHatesYou 19h ago

Til I am donkey.

20

u/StaticSystemShock 19h ago

We're all a bit of donkey and that's alright.

12

u/Wonderful_Pianist656 17h ago

Not only that, but they are super to have around on the farm, they are to coyotes what mongeese are to vipers. They love and they protecc

1

u/Artist-3677 1h ago

So they just don't want to make waffles?

1

u/daneonwayne 14h ago

There's no apostrophe needed for the plural of donkey.

6

u/StaticSystemShock 14h ago

I'm not sure why I put it there. It's not possessive statement so, yeah whatever, a typo which I will fix coz I'm not English native and I learn from mistakes.

u/MysteriousJuice1127 22h ago

The way is just stands there to be loved and petted🥹 Sweet boy

60

u/Shot_Squirrel8426 21h ago

Was this the one that got tased by the cops and then shot to death?

79

u/RK9990 20h ago

No that was a baby donkey

30

u/ubulerbu 19h ago

Wtf?

63

u/observant302 18h ago

45

u/Zerodyne_Sin 14h ago

Never seen a more cowardly bunch than cops. They brag about being tough and resilient when they're afraid of any boo boos and are mentally fragile.

Maybe I'm biased since they're so trigger happy with peopes beloved pets. Or maybe their cowardice being rewarded constantly has left a bitter taste on my mouth.

u/Firm_Policy9940 14h ago

I don’t think you’ve seen what a donkey can do to another animal. Or any equine species for that matter.
If a donkey is charging me or my dog, I’m shooting.

11

u/Pomodorosan 14h ago

Why are you telling me this, 15-days-old default username?

-13

u/Firm_Policy9940 14h ago

What does how long I’ve had a Reddit have to do with responding to a thread and giving realistic views on what a charging donkey is capable of?

9

u/LesserGooglyMooglie 12h ago

A miniature donkey that was used for petting zoos that was socialized to go to people for pets and treats, if that scares you enough to open fire you are not responsible enough to own a super soaker let alone carry the responsibility of a real firearm.

-7

u/Firm_Policy9940 11h ago

The linked article says nothing about it being a miniature donkey or that it was at a petting zoo. It says that they were following the scent of a missing child and the officer shot a donkey that was running towards him and the accompanying K-9 team.
Where are you getting that from?

3

u/LesserGooglyMooglie 11h ago

Because we actually read the case when it came out.

0

u/ubulerbu 11h ago

Thats so so sad.

7

u/casuallyregarded 13h ago

Police are so horrible.

Cats are carnivores and putting them on a vegan diet is animal abuse.

Totally adorable!! & So true! Beyond all spoken words, cultural differences, and boundaries, love is the one universal language that every single heart instinctively knows how to speak and receive.

2

u/Munkzilla1 12h ago

What language is he speaking? Did he call this sweet Donkey Jeremiah?

8

u/belokan 11h ago

He speaks french. He says « hey my Dodo, you want a lil hug? Come have your lil morning hug! » I can’t hear the rest.
At the end he speaks to the camera « It’s so good to get back into sculpting, bye everybody»
This guy is clearly living a great life lol

2

u/Munkzilla1 9h ago

Thank you. I have a hard time hearing and could not make it out. This was a sweet video.

1

u/Sea_Sider3898 13h ago

So cute
Can someone tell me which country this is?

1

u/belokan 11h ago

The guy speaks french

1

u/Sea_Sider3898 10h ago

Thanks, I understood that but I was curious if anyone could tell when region or country since French is spoken in like 25-30 countries

1

u/N121-2 9h ago

Only 2 1/2 french speaking countries are white.
I don’t speak french but this guys accent doesn’t sound like Belgian French to me (I’m dutch and familiar with how disgusting belgians sound). And the interior looks european based on the type of construction and age. So it’s not Canadian French.

He’s probably in France.

1

u/Sea_Sider3898 4h ago edited 3h ago

Hmm. My count is 6 countries that are primarily white and at least 90% French speaking.
I do speak French.
I’m hoping it’s your limitation in your English skills that’s leading you to be so offensive in your statement about Belgians! As I’m sure you’re well aware Dutch is not known worldwide for being terribly beautiful itself :)

1

u/Iampepeu 12h ago

I need donkey snuggles in my life.

1

u/rodwha 12h ago

Is it love or did his ears itch?

Where I live there is a donkey sanctuary. Every October you can reserve a time and visit the donkeys and buy pumpkins for Halloween. I’m incredibly excited to go this year, they are wonderful animals.

1

u/urbanek2525 7h ago

I've always loved donkeys. The first one I ever encountered was on a Greek Island that we were visiting when I was a little boy. The donkey's job was to help carry stuff from the dock to the tiny hotel (4 rooms). It would hang out at the well for pets and treats.

Custer State Park in South Dakota in the US has wild burros that beg for food. Bring carrots. One of my favorite memories is being mobbed by feral burros while I handed out carrots.
