Better be careful with other children around, dogs can get over protective and even attack people they might perceive as a threat.

A relative of mine had a dog and child with this sort of relationship. Unbelievably close. Dog was sappy and sweet and protective of the child. Then one day, the child tripped over the dog's tail whilst the dog was asleep. The dog woke up startled and snapped, just once, like a reflex, complete accident. Nearly took the kid's entire face off. Dog got put down and kid had to have plastic surgery. A sombre reminder that even the nicest dog is still an animal with instincts, a strong jaw and sharp teeth and an accident only takes a fraction of a second.
