I’m thinking the other bowl that has the towel over it has a treat in, so they are sniffing the bowl.!

You can teach a dog basically anything with enough reps and proper training. Some things take a lot of time and reps. Some just once. Breed and temperament matter a lot too.

My dog is stubborn and not very smart, but I could teach her this in probably a day. About the same time it took to teach her to ring a bell to go outside.

No way! Many people teach their dogs to do this! I’ve seen several of these videos.
