It's crazy how that movie is over 30 years old but still so relevant.

After watching the Shawshank Redemption last night for the hundredth time… I’m gonna say Shawshank Redemption

As of the time of me writing this, all of the highest upvoted responses are The Princess Bride, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, The Matrix, Shawshank Redemption.
I’m 46. This pleases me.
Also, please include Brazil. And also Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

I remember seeing this in the theater and people started screaming when Morgan Freeman got up on that bench.

I absolutely hated Blade Runner when I first saw it. I didn't get it and it didn't resonate with me in the slightest.
I saw the sequel out of some morbid sense of obligation and found I loved it - then went back and rewatched the first one and ended up seriously re-evaluating it. I get it now.

It really was the perfect movie. It had something for everyone- dinosaurs for all the kids, but also the common themes of arrogance leading to downfall and control merely being an illusion. If you’re rewatch it as an adult, almost everything in the movie comes back to support those themes.

u/and_a_dollar_short 12h ago
I saw it in theaters twice on the same day. Don’t remember if if was opening weekend or the following—didn’t matter, it all sold out.
I was in between 7th and 8th grade.
Felt real. Fuckin’ prime Spielberg, man. Kids, ya had to be there.

Got dragged to this at age ten and adored it. It’s completely filmed like it’s a modern American comedy and it works.

Casino Royale with Daniel Craig. Fantastic blend of action, drama, music, top notch performances and photography. I'm not a fan of the sequels, but Casino Royale is one of my favorite movies ever.

I'm going to re watch it. Big fan of war films but I really couldn't get into Apocalypse Now. Maybe I was just having a bad day or something because I've heard nothing but good things.

I read a great quote from someone asking an older person why they keep old books and read them over and over if the story never changes. They replied, "thats true, but i change. Im a different person reading that story" some goes for movies.

Alien.
Sets were amazing, acting was great and such an intense film.
I’m sure Ridley Scott is a feminist, if only they’d all listened to the woman and the fact a man is impregnated!

The Godfather, it’s a basic answer for a reason, like calling the Beatles a 10/10 rock band, it’s iconic for a reason.
I’ll put part 1 & 11 together in this, they are THE gangster epics, 3 hour movies where every scene serves a purpose, virtually every element of cinema there’s a masterful example of it in these films whether through the acting performances, the dialogue, the score, the cinematography all masterful examples of cinema.
you have the best Al Pacino performance of his career in part 11 and one of Di Niros best performances as young Vito corleone. You have a Marlon Brando performance among his best ever, you have Robert Duvall and let’s not forget Fredo as John Cazale “THAT AINT THE WAY I WANTED IT!” (My wife is probably tired of me quoting that scene and “I know it was you Fredo..you broke my heart”)
Some of the most iconic scenes like the baptism and the diner scene in part 1. Subtle details like when Michael lights the man’s cigarette and his hand isn’t shaking at all, showing how it’s become apparent he’s a natural to the life.
Cmon.. just classic.

Project Hail Mary. Grace Rocky save stars.
The story, the soundtrack, Rocky (James), Ryan, Sandra, Lord & Miller - they all nailed it, 10/10.
"Good" aliens are underused imo. They don't have to be monsters (although Annihilation still has my favorite, actually alien feeling sequence at the end).

u/fionagall 12h ago
I thought The Martian was equally as good as Project Hail Mary. The book was fantastic. I’m always worried about the movie versions, so hopefully anything they adapt by Weir won’t go sideways!

I listened to the audiobook and watched the move and it really blew my mind how the Eridiens treat Grace at the end of the film. Human hubris would never allow for rocky to live a dignified life on earth regardless of the circumstances that brought him here.

My 10/10 movie because I can watch it anytime it’s on is my cousin Vinny. I still think such a funny movie. And Marissa Tomei’s monologue is great every time. It’s not even my favorite movie… that’s Blade Runner which is also amazing and wildly different from the book.
