Men, what’s one small, seemingly insignificant thing you’ve noticed that can be a telltale sign of the difference between a genuinely good man and a bad one?

Wether they return the shopping cart at the grocery store or not.

Is this, like, a significant problem in the US? Here in Germany 99% of people return the cart.

Yes, a lot of people have “not my job” mentality. Hell, they even leave them inside handicap parking spots

The cost of hyperindividualism.

As someone that has worked at a grocery store for years, I can understand this happening sometimes. They're parked in a handicapped spot. They probably have mobility/age issues and walking the extra 20-50 feet to return a cart to a corral can be daunting if those problems are bad enough. Some folks even use the cart as their cane/walker. I saw this happen twice today and fortunately I work in a place that does carryout service for folks that need it.

However, I totally judge the inconsiderate & able bodied people that just decide to be lazy.

I've previously worked at a US grocery store for years and years. It's probably not 99% but also no, not really. It's one of those confirmation bias things: it's a lot easier to notice the few carts strewn around the parking lot than the dozens and dozens properly in the corral.

It's not a significant problem, as you noted. But it is a great answer to the question that started this thread. Assholes are assholes all the time and their carts are strewn around the parking lot. And it's a bigger problem in the US because we have encouraged being an asshole in our culture at this point.

Eh, to a point its a bias.. but wouldnt it mean its even more shitty then when everyone else is responsible? Putting your cart away is like one of the easiest litmus tests of how you see yourself in relation to everyone else. Theres no law forcing you to return your cart but we all know its still the decent thing to do. Incredible how many people simply do not care about social responsibility until they feel compelled to play along.. This is one of the best examples from this thread-- entirely nails the question.

It's because we might lose 1€ or 2€, there's no deposit for American shopping carts.

Most people do in the U.S., too, which is why the ones who don't stand out.

I’ve lived in many places across the US and the worst city for this is Dallas.

North America is going through some extreme culture rot, yes. Nobody cares anymore. I'm including Canada because it's true here too.

yes lol. So much that it's become a big topic of discussion.

Well have you met Americans? If you told me that 40 percent of my country didnt have the decency to return grocery carts I would probably believe it.

I notice it more that people leave hand baskets at the self checkout rather than putting it back where they got it from because "the attendant will get it". I dunno, I think if I got it out, I'm putting it back where I found it.

That’s because you want your coin back

Weirdly depends on the location. Very common not to return in California for some reason, but in a lot of the US pretty much everyone puts the cart back.

Nah it just very clearly shows that someone is a huge tool.

You sweet summer child...

Nah. Everyone pretty much returns the cart. The shopping cart thing comes from an internet parable that made the rounds like 10 years ago and went viral.

Unpopular for a reason, the only person you're fucking over with this (apart from other customers) is someone doing wage labor for Kroger.

God forbid you having a little bit of empathy.

What a weird thing to say. Returning your cart to a provided, accessible, and close place to keep them organized and easily retrievable is not shilling for a corporation.

Should be at the top 😆

Or take their pint glasses back to the bar at the pub when they're done

1

u/JJEE 7h ago

Or bring a toilet brush to clean the shit streaks if they use a public toilet

1

u/USA_A-OK 7h ago

Or even use the existing toilet brushes to do the same

2

u/FireLucid 7h ago

We have deep and shallow trolleys. They only stack with the same sort. So when the trolley bay only has two lanes, you have one for deep, one for shallow. It's about 50/50 if someone has fucked it up. last time I went I pulled one out of the wrong one and put it in the right one as I was putting mine away.

No way I'm skipping that part of shopping

Love a Cart Narcs reference!

1

u/LegitPanic 2h ago

What if they take the carts home and fix them, sell them back to a different mall for 18 bucks?

1

u/Superrodan 2h ago

I'd like to add to this. Every time I go to the store there are carts people have left receipts and bags and tissues and coupon magazines in. Part of putting a cart back should be clearing your garbage.
