Men, what’s one small, seemingly insignificant thing you’ve noticed that can be a telltale sign of the difference between a genuinely good man and a bad one?

In my personal experience, the treatment of animals. Severed friendships with guys that mistreated animals and think it's funny. Crazy how some guys can seem totally fine and then they'll go kick a dog or something for no fucking reason.

Yea, I just broke up with a guy who stayed overnight at my place for a week or more at a time; meanwhile, he had a rescue pitbull girl he left at home with his dad who can barely walk. He talked a lot about how he was her entire world, but openly admitted that he ignores her when she doesn’t behave the way he wants. He did the same to me, only I knew exactly what he was doing and would just be content in my peace. When this happened in person and I didn’t respond, he would sulk and eventually project and ask if I was ok so he could start a fight.

Lmao those are the worst things to get.  Shitty people get shitty animals.  Also, it's a female animal, not a "girl"

A lot of shitty people lavish attention on their pets. It's because pets can't talk back and don't have thumbs with which to open the door and leave them. A human has free will and can decide to leave you; an animal does not.

Obviously if someone kicks puppies, don't go out with that guy. But a guy who likes his dog is just a guy that likes his dog, it doesn't mean he's a good person. Even Hitler had a dog that liked him.

I am a straight man, and i was referring to "friends" getting a little comfortable and thinking I'm a piece of shit as well and would just go along with that kind of behavior.

And sure you can be piece of shit who loves dogs, but FAR more people who love dogs/animals are compassionate people. It's just a very easy, general way to judge someone's character.

I'm just gonna disagree, as the majority of people period more or less like dogs. Ofc there's variations, like people who don't want to have a dog but like their mom's dog or will pet random dogs on the street, etc. It's not much of a way to filter people. It's like saying "people who like pizza are compassionate", well most people like pizza to some degree. Including most of the compassionate ones.

I am actually wary of people who are nuts over their dog but less than kind to humans. Dogs don't tell you no, they don't have political opinions, their wants and needs are simple. They're easier to like than humans, and easier to control.

This isn't about liking dogs, though.

It's about treatment of dogs.

You mentioned Hitler. He mistreated his dogs. He walked around with a dog whip.

I think the sentiment is more "people that are mean to animals are definitely shitty to other people," not the other way around

This is what I came to say. Not always the right sign if they are kind to their own animals, but definitely a strong signal if the6 are cruel to any.
