People who drive under the speed limit, why?

They do it to mess with you specifically. As soon as you drive away they all speed up

Don't break the law when you're breaking the law

i don't think it cancles out.

I always drive AT the limit or up to 5mph over especially if other vehicles around me are traveling faster as well which happens often on certain busy roads.
Like I notice on one busy street that's 35mph, most people will actually drive 40 or even slightly more so I keep up pace with them but gladly because 35 feels too slow for such a busy street

8

u/Wonderful_Bedroom712 14h ago

I am carrying a car full of fresh hot soup that will spill if I go any faster.

2

u/MadMadRoger 13h ago

I do this too. My car will hold 120 gallons now that I sealed the doors

5

u/heybdiddy 13h ago

Because as I age, my eyesight and reaction time are not as good as they used to be

6

u/TheRealistoftheReal 13h ago

You’re not supposed to drive over it?

3

u/mpgoodness 13h ago

I’ve seen the aftermath of crashes too many times. Risk of getting completely fucked up or killing yourself or especially other people to get someplace 5-10 minutes faster makes no sense. Doesn’t mean driving under the speed limit all the time but driving 20 -30 over is just senseless.

3

u/buckut 13h ago

cause i got drugs in the car

11

u/FlopShanoobie 14h ago

Because often the conditions warrant caution over speed.

2

u/hero_of_ages 13h ago

And “conditions” could be: its a beautiful day out and theres kids playing in the street and theres people walking their dogs and theres no sidewalks and going 10 mph faster saves you a second or two

2

u/greenslam 13h ago

How bad is the weather where you live? Or are your tires essentially racing slicks?

-1

u/Logitech4873 12h ago

Are you aware of concepts such as: Bends, crests, snow, ice, traffic?

1

u/greenslam 12h ago

Intimately aware of all that.

Are you saying that your local transportation authority has poorly designed the roadways in your area for bends and crests that its hard to drive at speed limit or faster in a well maintained sedan when conditions are good or better?

Now in regards to snow and ice, assuming in North America and living south of 54 latitude mark, those weather conditions are typically in effect from November to early March.

If your local municipality maintains the roadways adequately. In good winter weather, a well maintained sedan with winter tire should have no issues maintaining the speed limit.

-3

u/Logitech4873 11h ago edited 35m ago

Are you saying that your local transportation authority has poorly designed the roadways in your area for bends and crests that its hard to drive at speed limit or faster in a well maintained sedan when conditions are good or better?

The landscape is the problem, not the transportation authority. They can't spend billions on every small rural road just to make cars able to maintain the speed limit at all times lol.

Now in regards to snow and ice, assuming in North America and living south of 54 latitude mark

Why are you assuming these things?

If your local municipality maintains the roadways adequately. In good winter weather, a well maintained sedan with winter tire should have no issues maintaining the speed limit.

They do! But the roads are bendy and have lots of hills and crests. And obviously, on snow and ice you have to take extra care due to the far longer braking distances.

I think you may have to start considering that not everyone lives where you live.

-4

u/FlopShanoobie 11h ago

You sound like a vastly overconfident driver. That’s expected. A recent Allstate survey concluded more than 80% of drivers believed they were more competent than EVERY OTHER driver on the road. As the kids say, the math don’t math. Or as my demographer friend would say, that’s a statistical impossibility.

Not even F1 drivers go ballz out 100% of the time. Rain, temperature, wind, traffic - all elements of the calculation about what speed is appropriate. And we ain’t F1 pilots. We’re just trying to get to work without dying.

3

u/greenslam 11h ago

Speed limits are set to the 85th % percentile mark of traffic speeds. So the 100% doesn't apply. Even then, a standard sedan, suv, pickup truck can drive more aggressively and safely than a 5 ton truck or semi for the same stretch of road way.

For a typical accident in good or better road conditions, i would guess its caused by driver error due to traffic conditions vs road conditions when doing around the speed limit.

Look at a lot of those accidents posted on r/roadcam. Its people going way too fast or misjudging the space needed to safely change lanes. Or tailgating way too close and not leaving sufficient stopping room.

-1

u/ihaveabs 4h ago

You sound like a goof

2

u/CashWideCock 13h ago

Because I drive a large, heavy vehicle that takes a long time to get moving and a long time to stop. I’m not driving over 65 regardless of the speed limit.

2

u/Orthos_ate_my_chair 13h ago

I live in a speed trap town. Last thing I need is a ticket.

2

u/Own-Elk7348 13h ago

At 5 mph over the limit, the storm troopers won't bother you. If you're the kind of driver who goes 40 in a 55 zone, so be it. But if you're the kind of driver who drives 40 and accelerates to stop people from passing, don't ever wonder why everyone is road raging you off the road.

2

u/Wabbit_Wampage 3h ago

You realize that it's an UPPER limit, not lower, right?

3

u/hero_of_ages 14h ago

Because the car in front of me is going below the speed limit and I’m maintaining a safe following distance and theres nowhere else to fucking go.

3

u/largemargesentme__- 13h ago

Gas mileage goes way up, and everyone passes me so I don't have to take off my cruise control.

Driving is just more relaxing when you can just cruise in the right lane and not worry about jockeying for position.

1

u/slide0990 3h ago

So you decided to make every body else drive more annoying...

1

u/largemargesentme__- 1h ago

I would say it's the opposite. Your lack of patience is what causes traffic worse, driving fast and aggressively increases other road user's risk of death or serious injury.

It doesn't sound like you should be driving if you're having emotions like annoyance while operating a 4,000 lbs vehicle.

1

u/V1per41 3h ago

I think it's a personality thing. I would be far less relaxed knowing the amount of traffic I'm causing behind me and making everyone else's life around me on the road worse.

I feel more relaxed knowing that my driving style isn't negatively impacting everyone around me.

1

u/largemargesentme__- 1h ago

How is driving in the right lane making everyone else's life on the road worse?

The only reason their life is worse is because they're choosing to drive aggressively and exceed the speed limit. That's what causes traffic.

If everyone was polite and drove slowly there wouldn't be issues. Driving fast and aggressively doesn't actually save you time, it's harder on your equipment and uses more fuel, most importantly it increases your risk of death or serious injury.

Those people should be doing what I'm doing, not the other way around.

1

u/V1per41 1h ago

Pretty much everything you said is just wrong.

The only reason their life is worse is because they're choosing to drive aggressively and exceed the speed limit. That's what causes traffic.

Traffic is just throughput. How many cars go through a section of road in a certain amount of time. This is mostly affected by the number of cars on the road. If people spend less time on the road they spend less time impacting others. Everyone could drive safely (at least they should be able to) at 80mph on a major three lane highway in the US. If one person wants to drive 65, even in the right most lane which most don't, you still have faster drivers who need to slow down around you.

If everyone was polite and drove slowly there wouldn't be issues.

Sure there would. You can drive slowly and politely, but that just puts more cars on the road which causes more traffic. Many people would be happier to just get where they are going.

Driving fast and aggressively doesn't actually save you time

That's literally exactly what it does. Driving 80 on a highway instead of 60 gets you to your location 15 minutes sooner.

it's harder on your equipment and uses more fuel

This is true, but again comes down to personality I think. I'd rather spend a few more cents on my gas if it means me, and more importantly, everyone around me gets where they are going sooner. The idea of possibly inconveniencing someone else makes me super uncomfortable, but that's likely just a personality quirk from me because I find it very annoying to be inconvenienced by other people who don't care.

most importantly it increases your risk of death or serious injury.

By a pretty negligible amount I would assume. And you have to draw the line somewhere. If 50 is safer than 65 then why not drive 50 on the highway? In the end, of you can't safely drive 15 over the limit on a standard US highway in a modern consumer vehicle you really shouldn't be driving. Note that I don't actually advocate people drive that fast, just that the skill bar for being able to do it is pretty low.

Those people should be doing what I'm doing, not the other way around.

Your driving method gives you lower stress and that works for you and that's great. I see several people on Reddit say the same thing. I'm not saying anything is wrong with it. I'm just saying that I care too much about other people that I couldn't. I personally get pretty annoyed by others inconveniencing me so I try to make sure I'm never doing the same to others.

•

u/largemargesentme__- 36m ago

Jesus christ dude, did you just write all of this? It's all wrong by the way.

No, this is all wrong. What causes traffic is people being impatient, changing lanes, driving fast and driving aggressively. It causes unpredictability which gums up the system. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022437524001440

If everyone drove like computers at 55 mph you could fit far more cars in a given space without gumming up the works.

The speed argument is nonsense because that extra time saved is completely wiped out by a light or traffic. Traffic is caused by excessive speed.

You don't care about people, you just get anxious about going with what's popular. Also known as the Nuremberg Defense.

Really though, the real answer is everyone should just stop driving. It's about the worst method of travel for inner-city commuting.

3

u/Manu442 13h ago

Why do people skways want to be going so fast relax a bit

1

u/V1per41 3h ago

Why would people rather be in their cars causing traffic for others when they could be with their family or friends?

2

u/Logitech4873 13h ago edited 12h ago

Because I'm limited by any of the following things:

  • Visual conditions.
  • Bends or crests.
  • Road surface conditions.
  • Other traffic.

And obviously, going FASTER than the speed limit would incur fines, and lower my car's range.

3

u/Moonstoner 14h ago

Speedometer is busted and I just drive by vibes now. So i have no idea if im under or not.

1

u/moonlight_rocky 13h ago

I did this and got a warning going 78 in a 65 on a back road 💔💔 trooper was nice and saw i had a speedometer app on my phone thats prolly why he let me go

5

u/Adventurous-Bug671 14h ago edited 3h ago

EDIT: OKAY - everybody please stop telling me the same dumb shit over and over. You've ALL said the SAME thing to me like 50 fucking times. and you can all shut the absolute fuck up now, THANK YOU.  Im not replying to ANY other bullshit in this thread. If you have an opinion. I PROMISE YOU, 5 other people in this thread have already voiced it, and i have already responded.

I drive 5 over, but half the drivers who end up behind me seem to think 5 over is below the limit. So when they ride my ass dangerously close, I slow down below the limit

1: because theyre driving dangerously close and driving more slowly is much safer in that situation.

2: because fuck those fucking assholes. you ride my ass when im already going 5 over im gonna make your day even worse.

edit: lol fuck all of you people dude

edit 2: if you drive a car, you're a bad person.

edit THREE: if you read this and for some insane reason assumed im doing this in the left lane of a highway, that is a ridiculous assumption and you're genuinely an idiot.

2

u/just-talkin-shit 5h ago

You must be my spirit animal. If im on a cou try road going f 20km/hr over the limit and you ride my ass, we'll, looks like we're both going to be driving the limit.

8

u/chasing_geese49 13h ago

That isn't your job to do. You're actively making the situation more dangerous.

-1

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

No im not. slowing down when someone is dangerously close is safer. They are riding my ass to make me go faster than im already going. Which again, is 5 over the limit. Im not going faster than that.

Also, I dont fucking care about their safety. If you ride my ass when im going 5 over, FUCK you.

1

u/chasing_geese49 13h ago

The safe thing to do would be to move over. It is not your job to try and control what other people do on the road.

Also, the thing about driving is everyone's safety matters whether you like it or not. By reacting emotionally to situations like these instead of what I can only hope you would've been taught when you got your license, it only ever puts everyone in danger.

1

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

im not reacting emotionally, im slowing down because it's safer to do so whe. theyre driving dangerously close to me. It does NOT put everyone in danger. Speeding dangerously does, and thats their fucking problem.

4

u/chasing_geese49 13h ago

Obvioudly speeding puts people in danger.

The "if you do X, fuck you" attitude isn't emotional? You sure about that? It is not your job to control other people on the road. The best you can do is stay back from dangerous drivers and call emergency services of it's really that big of an issue.

Where in the hell did you get your license from?

4

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

dude

im going 5 over

someone rides my ass dangerously

I slow down to like 2 below because it let's them know to back the fuck off or pass.

they either back the fuck off or pass.

0

u/chasing_geese49 13h ago

You had so many opportunities to say that you give them an opportunity to pass instead of making it sound like you intentionally block them, I don't see how that's my problem

6

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

dude it's implied. you can always pass. I never implied that I BLOCK them. I said MULTIPLE times in other comments that if it's safe to pass they can pass. if it's not safe to pass then they can slow the fuck down for 5 fucking minutes and i'll go back to going 5 over if they stop riding my ass.

2

u/chasing_geese49 13h ago

Sure, in other comments. You're talking to me now. Do people really habitually constantly check the rest of the thread?

Also, if they're riding your ass, they've probably already got some sort of emotional issue going on. I'd hesitate to aggravate that.

u/thrwawayguy1345 4h ago

Even if he is in the left lane, just go around. I don’t know why people get so bent out of shape with people camping in the left lane. It takes me no more time to just go around on the right and I don’t get upset AT ALL.

1

u/chasing_geese49 4h ago

Not all roads have more than one lane though???

2

u/Talusi 7h ago

I'm sure the long line of traffic behind the tail gater really appreciates when you do this.

BTW. You're only supposed to slow down to build a larger gap to the car ahead of you allowing you to come to a more gradual stop if you need to. Once the gap is there... Resume speed. If there is no car in front of you, ignore them and drive like normal. Anything else is just serving your own ego

1

u/Adventurous-Bug671 7h ago

hey buddy, eat my entire fucking dick and balls.

2

u/Talusi 7h ago

Sorry you object to what every half decent driving school teaches these days.

But hey, I know with the way you drive you probably never use em, but, I think I'll pass 😂

-3

u/philistus 13h ago

But if you can get over and let them by you should. You aren't the speed monitor.

3

u/Astrophy058 13h ago

Correct unless he’s in the right lane.

2

u/Abestar909 13h ago

Yes but have you considered, fuck them bitches?

0

u/Bird_Herder 13h ago

Ugh. I hate the speed monitors. I drive 5 over on the highway so I usually find myself passing people. At least a couple of times a week I run into someone that speeds up as I'm trying to pass. So here we are, both going 80 in a 60 as I'm trying to complete to pass as quickly as possible since I'm in the oncoming traffic lane.

1

u/Adventurous-Bug671 12h ago

again, im going 5 over. im not speeding up to match anybody trying to pass. Im driving a reasonable speed. everyone apparently reading what I wrote and making wild assumptions. the literal entire point was that im driving a perfectly reasonable 5 over and im not going faster just because some asshole behind me wants to go 15 over

-1

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

That is rarely the case. If it's a passing zone they can pass. If they can't pass, i'm not driving more dangerously just because they want to.

Again, I slow down if someone is riding my ass, because it's safer to do so.

I'm not the speed monitor. I drive safely. Me slowing down is about my safety. If they need to drive fast, they can figure it the fuck out in their own.

-1

u/El_mochilero 13h ago

Why not just get out of their way and not create another hazard in the road? You were the kid who really wanted to be the hall monitor at school, weren’t you?

3

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

Because im ALREADY going 5 over the limit and im not going out of my way to accommodate every fucking dipshit who thinks traffic laws dont apply to them. They can speed all the fuck they want, and they are free to pass if it's safe to do so. Me slowing down makes it EASIER for them to pass.

Not my fucking problem. driving slower when someone is riding your ass IS SAFER.

1

u/ShowdownValue 13h ago

As long as you stay out the passing lane.

3

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

dude obviously - why would anyone think I was even talking about a multi-lane highway??? if someone is going slow on a highway you can just drive the fuck past them.

I was obviously talking about single lane roads - the only place where any of these talking points could possibly fucking apply. how the fuck would someone get stuck behind me on a highway unless theres already backed up traffic ??

0

u/rankispanki 4h ago

You have a warped view of your reasoning behind maliciously going slower. You aren't the police, it isn't your job to enforce the speed limit. If the tailgating bothers you so bad then hit your hazards pull over and let them pass. What's your problem?

1

u/Adventurous-Bug671 3h ago

dude read my fucking comments or something jesus christ.

im going 5 over

someone starts riding my ass dangerously

I slow down to like 2 below so they can either pass or back the fuck off

im not policing anybody. they can go as fast as they fucking want but if they try to make me speed faster than 5 over they can go fuck themselves. im nit getting a ticket. im not PULLING the fuck over or calling the fucking cops because someone is driving like a dumb fucking asshole.

get the fuck over yourself dipshit.

0

u/rankispanki 3h ago

Everything you're getting so mad about is exactly you're doing though, you need to get over your ego.

You said you purposely slow down, that's malicious. No one is making you go faster, so why don't you just stay at 5 over when someone tailgates you instead of actively going under the speed limit and then trying to justify it by saying it's "safer"?

No one is going to pass you on a solid double yellow just because you slowed down, you have to actively make it clear you want them to pass by using your hazards or your hand or something. You're just getting mad and doing something to antagonize the tailgater, that's not okay.

I've let soooo many people pass me on one lane country roads, you're literally just being difficult for no reason.

0

u/V1per41 3h ago

So first, tailgaters suck and should have their licenses revoked.

But second, why do you go out of your way to make someone else's day worse? Even if they are an asshole? What's wrong with just continuing on with you life and just letting these people be? Or why not just pull over and let them go on their merry way?

Sounds like you're choosing to be a jerk and think it's okay because someone else was a jerk first.

Also, how often is this happening to you? I get tailgated maybe like once a year? If you're driving appropriately I have to imagine it's extremely rare.

-2

u/Feminist_Hugh_Hefner 13h ago

I'm a nurse and for a few years I had a job where I would be on-call for emergent C-sections at a very small hospital that couldn't afford to keep people in my role in-house 24/7.

Sometimes time is pretty critical in those situations, but it's not like we get lights and sirens, the best we can do is flash our headlights and hope people like you will get out of the way.

3

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

if you NEED to go more than 5 over, turn on your fucking lights. I absolutely go out of my way to accommodate emergency vehicles. but if I can't identify that you are an emergency vehicle, then you are just another driver.

I'm not going more than 5 over and risking a ticket just because some random asshoke wants to go as fast as they want.

if 5 over isnt enoufh for you than thats your problem.

-2

u/Feminist_Hugh_Hefner 13h ago

nobody is asking you to drive beyond your comfort level, that would be ludicrous

you can move, bitch, get out of the way...

2

u/Logitech4873 13h ago

Are you allowed to speed in these situations? Are you seriously complaining about people who are already speeding as if they're going too slow? The problem is the shitty logistics solution of your job, not the traffic.

0

u/Feminist_Hugh_Hefner 12h ago

nope.

you are allowed to take the ticket 🤷

2

u/Logitech4873 12h ago

Then you should call some emergency service to deal with it. Like an ambulance. It's nonsense that your job wants their employees to break the law, and this is something that you should complain about.

0

u/Feminist_Hugh_Hefner 12h ago

I think there's a colossal misunderstanding here.

Small rural hospital. Small birthing center. There's not enough business to keep an entire surgical team in the building all night, so we take turns being "on call" which means when there is an emergency delivery, there are designated people who are available, sober, etc, ready to come in if necessary.

Usually it's no big deal, sometimes it's more pressing, and on very rare occasion, it's a matter of life and death.

Nobody is instructed to speed.

It would not be effective to send an ambulance to my house to pick me up so we can then go 10 over lol

but it would be nice if the self-appointed traffic blockers, like the asshole I was replying to, would just move aside for a moment instead of intentionally slowing down below the speed limit.

but if that's the world you want to live in, I'm not stopping you 🤷

3

u/Logitech4873 12h ago

They're not blocking traffic. Just pass whenever convenient. If anything, they made it easier for you.

You cannot expect people to be driving above the speed limit for your convenience.

1

u/Feminist_Hugh_Hefner 12h ago

I was responding to the part where they're talking about intentionally blocking and slowing below the speed limit...

has this all been because you think they said they pull over?? JFC dude, sound out the words if you need to

-5

u/Yeti-110 13h ago

Or you could get out of the way and let them by like they’re signaling you to do

2

u/Haunting_Purpose7423 13h ago

It’s they’re job to pass

2

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

if they do it somewhere where it's safe to pass, they are free to do so. im not pulling the fuck over when im already going 5 over. If you ride my ass while im going 5 over, then FUCK you, you can figure it the fuck out. It's YOUR responsibility to drive with traffic. Im not going out of my way to drive dangerously to accommodate assholes who think traffic laws dont apply to them.

-1

u/Yeti-110 13h ago

Yes but if you look in your rear view and see a line of cars behind you and open road in front of you, you’re the problem.

2

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

fortunately that is not the case.

0

u/Yeti-110 13h ago

You don’t do much interstate driving, do you?

2

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

this doesnt apply to highways. Also, when there ar multiple lanes, this literally isnt an issue.

0

u/Yeti-110 13h ago

Ok literally everyone here has assumed you meant you are gatekeeping people getting by on a highway 🤦‍♂️ yeah I don’t care what you do on a single lane road, most of the time those speed limits are ridiculously low anyways and have cops on every corner trying to generate revenue

2

u/Adventurous-Bug671 13h ago

I dont know why the fuck they would assume I meant a highway, when on a highway anyone can just drive right the fuck past you.

0

u/Yeti-110 13h ago

No. They can’t. If it’s empty, sure. Highways are rarely empty. But the amount of times I’ve been stuck in a line in the left lane that I either have to wait for the guy at the front of the line to wake up and get over so everyone can continue, or drive felony speeds weaving through traffic just to get by the guy causing the issue so I can slow back down to an appropriate speed is insane. Left lane campers can and do cause a lot of traffic and dangerous situations, especially if they don’t match the flow of traffic

5

u/jrb825 14h ago

It's the limit not the target

3

u/ShowdownValue 13h ago

Driving too slow is also dangerous

1

u/Logitech4873 12h ago

Sure, but this wasn't about driving too slow.

-3

u/Phrosty12 13h ago

It really is just that simple, and I'm always amazed at how most people don't get it. The self-entitlement dripping from OP's question is incredible.

3

u/USDXBS 14h ago

Because I don't want to risk going over.

I drive like a law abiding cop who hates me is always watching me.

0

u/Successful-Worth-390 14h ago

You cant risk going over if you just simply pay attention.

2

u/wirefixer 13h ago

Because I’m stoned!

2

u/Firebolt164 13h ago

Serious reply - just because the sign says 45, doesn't mean the traffic, weather or road conditions are perfect. If the rain just stared and the roads are slick or it's nighttime and foggy or if I'm towing something heavy, I'm not going to laugh it

2

u/methpartysupplies 7h ago

Because I’m not paying attention and didnt notice the speed limit increased, or because I’m doing something illegal.

3

u/NYCWartortle 14h ago

Because studies show that driving around 20 mph or less is less likely to kill pedestrians. Also in NYC we have speed limit cameras everywhere.

1

u/MadMadRoger 13h ago

Not running them over also helps.

3

u/McLarenBuggati 8h ago

Easier to not run them over when you drive slower? Easier to react to something at slower speeds and most of the time, you just make it to the red light 5 seconds faster.

2

u/Ballmaster9002 14h ago

Anything above 60ish becomes exponentially less fuel efficient.

Plus, once you get into that 65-75 range you gotta keep moving in and out of lanes. So much work.

Easier to just chill on cruise control and relax. I dont need to get to the Sam's Club 3 minutes faster

1

u/largemargesentme__- 13h ago

Agreed, I've always gotten considerably better mileage at 55 mph.

1

u/azsxdcfvg 13h ago

because you can get a ticket if you drive over the speed limit

0

u/Big-Carpenter7921 13h ago

I'm a patriot. I protest speed limits by exceeding them

1

u/azsxdcfvg 13h ago

Real patriots drive into buildings

2

u/snekinmaboot1 13h ago

Because the sign says maximum, not minimum

1

u/the_sagely 13h ago

Dont rlly do this on the highway but if its on a neighborhood road or in the city, I like to take in my surroundings, especially if its at night

The speeds I want to go, yes. It would cut driving time in half

1

u/Big-Carpenter7921 13h ago

How else are they going to slow down the speeders?

1

u/ImaHamSammich 13h ago

It’s almost expected to go about 10 Mph over in my area. The police won’t bother you at all unless you are going over that. On the highway I literally had a Trooper tell me they don’t bother you unless you are over by 15 Mph. Many famous out of towners have made remarks on it, that it’s just wild to them.

1

u/octopuscharade 13h ago

I do it just to piss people off

1

u/Broad-Back1659 13h ago

I drive at the limit or 5 mph over or 10. I always stay in the right lane. If others want to drive 10 to 20 mph over the limit, im not in their way.

1

u/graymuse 13h ago

Exactly how are speed limits determined for roadways?

1

u/UraniumRocker 13h ago

I’m in no rush, I left the house with plenty of time.

1

u/infrequentaccismus 9h ago

My automatic cruise control didn’t notice the speed limit changed. Sorry!!

1

u/Briffy03 8h ago

Right now because im on a bike for 6 months. Im on a bike because i was caught driving to fast

1

u/sirflappington 7h ago

when i do it’s because i can see a red light / traffic ahead so im not gonna bother speeding up too much

1

u/DigitalJedi850 3h ago

It's literally the law... Is why.

When you got your license, you agreed to adhere to it yourself.

This is like asking a pilot why he flies at a certain altitude, or a captain why he doesn't just go Around a shipping lane.

1

u/V1per41 3h ago

I understand this rationale, and it makes complete sense. But let me play a little devil's advocate.

Roads and all modern vehicles are designed for faster speeds than the speed limits and police don't (at least with any regularity) enforce people traveling 5 - 10 over the posted limit, depending on the situation of course

Also, it's literally the law to not travel over the limit. Traveling the posted limit is just fine. So why travel under? Why go 35 in a 40 or 55 in a 65? It's completely legal and safe to go a little faster but many people still don't. What's the reasoning here?

0

u/6ixty_9ine 14h ago

Uhh, it’s the law?

-6

u/ethancknight 14h ago

No, driving at the speed limit is the law. Driving under isn’t required

7

u/beachhunt 14h ago

It should be called "the speed" then. "Speed limit" sounds like something you shouldn't exceed.

0

u/ethancknight 13h ago

Yes, speed limit is something you shouldn’t exceed.

If the speed limit is 70, don’t exceed 70, that’s exactly what I said.

You can go 70, no need to go below it.

2

u/beachhunt 10h ago

That's not exactly what you said, it's only half of what you said.

If the speed limit is 50 and it's raining or foggy, you could absolutely get a ticket for driving 50 (or even slightly under the limit).

Basic speed law says go as fast as is safe for road conditions. The limit puts a cap on that but you can go slower IF it's safe to do so.

Obv going slower for no reason is unsafe and you can also get ticketed for that.

-1

u/ethancknight 9h ago

Sorry but in the US I’ve never once heard that you can get a ticket for driving at or below the speed limit, regardless of conditions.

2

u/Amused-Observer 6h ago

You can get a ticket for going under in the US. A lot of interstates have a posted minimum speed limit

0

u/ethancknight 6h ago

That’s not what I meant. The commenter specified you can get a ticket for driving “slightly” under the speed limit (like 49 in a 50) if the conditions are bad, implying you’re going too fast even though you’re technically still under the limit.

Obviously I know about getting a ticket for driving under the minimum limit on highways (55)

1

u/beachhunt 3h ago

I got stopped in socal driving 45 in a 45, so this is why I know this. It's ok, you don't have to believe me but a speed limit is not a strict minimum.

2

u/SnooTangerines7026 14h ago

Why do you drive over?

1

u/Borgoroth 13h ago

I don't know how to fucking drive. Not everyone knows how to do everything. Driving's not the only thing.

1

u/Haunting_Purpose7423 13h ago

Then you shouldn’t be driving…

1

u/Exotic_Worker_3484 14h ago

I drive just over the speed limit and use cruise control. Doing 20 kph over isn’t going to save me a lot of time in most cases and if I’m worried about time I could leave earlier

1

u/theflavoryellow 13h ago

This is great take, you don't have to drive twice the limit but damn I want to get to my destination at reasonable time.

1

u/Icy-Belt-8519 13h ago

I went below the speed limit today cause it wasn't safe to do the speed limit, UK winding country lane

2

u/kiwi8975 13h ago

Also in the UK, I will never understand having the national speed limit on those country lanes with those insane corners and hills and barely space for two cars

2

u/Logitech4873 13h ago

You're meant to drive according to the conditions. The limit is just the maximum.

1

u/kiwi8975 12h ago

Well yeah I know, but what I’m saying is I just don’t understand why they would choose the national as the speed limit rather than I dont know 30 or even 20 on those bends

1

u/violenthectarez 5h ago

Speed limit is a maximum not a minimum

0

u/HokayeZeZ 14h ago

Because the speed limit is the speed limit. Going higher can result in a ticket that I don't want to pay to save a couple of minutes on my commute.

0

u/Amused-Observer 6h ago

You're one of those who live in a delusional reality where if you go over a cop will magically appear and give you a ticket

Come back to reality, Tom

1

u/HokayeZeZ 6h ago

Lmao dog its not that serious.

A lot of drivers have no idea what they're doing. They treat their car as a machine where you press the gas to move forward and the brake to slow down and stop at that. They don't think about or understand the limits of traction that their car is able to perform.

A lot of drivers are also scared of driving. This leads to them being overly cautious for no reason because they can't gain the confidence to go the speed limit on the interstate that is a straight line. Also I've noticed more people think they need to come to a complete stop before they turn their car. It kind of infuriates me because there's absolutely no reason why you can't just roll into your turn unless you're incapable of being aware of your surroundings.

On the interstate here almost everybody brakes for no reason on giant corners that are about 1 mile long. I know for a fact that you can hit that corner going well over 100 mph in a shitbox easily but people still brake for it when they're going 15 mph under the 60 mph speed limit.

0

u/martman006 13h ago

I’m coasting up to a red light, unnecessary brake use is just wasting precious fuel and energy. Then when the light is green, I actually fucking go instead of looking at my phone leaving 7 second between me and the car in front and then complain about traffic and waiting a a light for 3 cycles….)

But otherwise, speed limit or above, unless the posted speed is 75+, then I’ll camp in the right lane at 70 mph because I drive a 5,300 brick on 35” tires… (wind resistance starts getting hella exponential for me at that point.)

0

u/Bundabar 5h ago

-You’re not supposed to drive over it, so you risk loss of fortune and privilege.
-The risk of accident increases exponentially the faster you go.
-The amount of time you save decreases roughly hyperbolically the faster you drive.
-At higher speeds aerodynamic drag greatly impacts fuel economy
-Overall travel time and therefore time saved is largely all a gamble based on a large number of uncontrollable factors such as traffic lights, construction, accidents, weather, ect.

Edit: If you’re driving fast you think you’re winning a race that you’re not.

Better question:

Drivers who drive under the speed limit in any lane that isn't the right lane -and not in Virginia- why do you do it?
