Film & Camera Theory How to photograph bright signs at night?

Thumbnail

I just got back from a trip to Japan. I'm not 100% happy with some of the night photos I took. They've got a nice vibe, but all of the illuminated signs have a bright glow around them, making it hard to read the text.

Normally I take landscape photos while hiking, this was my first time doing night photography, and the rain might also have been a factor. Was there something I missed when taking these photos?

I used Aperture Mode (f8 for first two, f2.8 for last two) on my A7RV with a Tamron 20-40mm lens. No filters or post-processing beyond the camera's built-in "Vivid" creative style.

Editing/Post Processing best way to reverse negative images from an archive?

I’ve found several negative images at various libraries and universities in the area and would love to reverse them. I do my best to take a picture of them without the overhead glare, but since I do not own them I am unable to scan them and the light boxes aren’t the easiest to photograph, then I invert the colors. When reversed, the colors aren’t as vibrant and it’s washed out, which could be fixed with editing, but surely there’s a better way to do it this?

Editing/Post Processing How do I go through my 1000 photos from vacation?

Just got back from 2 weeks in Italy. Took hundreds of photos plus my BILs proposal. I'm a beginner and wondering how I efficiently go through these endless photos now to decide what to keep and what to purge. I have lots of photos that are the same subject but 5 different photos to choose from for example

Camera Buying Advice Camera for hiking, somewhat weather-proof?

(1) Budget, country, and currency: ~$1000 USD, USA - Dollars.

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? No currently owned cameras.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot? Scenery, Wildlife, People, Hikes, Mountains

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Primarily for Photography, not so concerned with recording videos.

Getting back into photography after a long break.

Looking at the Canon R50, Nikon Z50II, and the Fuji X-T30 III.

I care less about the video capabilities, more about the actual photography.

I want to take it hiking, a lot, and shoot such scenes - from flowers, to broader landscapes/sweeping views. But also pictures of people.

Where I live (USA - so pricing in USD $ - around the $1000 prince point) things are pretty dry 95% of the year (high alpine desert) but also going to the Peak District in the UK next year, so potential for taking pictures in damp/wet conditions if not outright rain.

Some cameras are noted as being weathersealed, but others are not - how much of a difference will that make?

Trying to figure out which of the 3 to go with. Initial research said Canon R50, but now I've spent more time looking around, I have the 3 different options in mind.

Still split between buying new vs used, but certainly willing to get a more expensive option used if it ticks the boxes and is not one I've come across yet.

Lens Buying Advice Is the Canon 17-40 F4L USM (£150), Canon 24-105 F4L IS (£230) and Canon 16-35 F2.8L (£289) still worthy of using nowadays or are they not worth the money? (currently don't own anything smaller than a 50mm so would be for general purpose whenever needed no specific purpose) TIA

Discussion/General Where do you share your work nowadays?

Question mostly for hobbyist photographers - where do you share your work nowadays? I keep posting on reddit on and off, often deleting the account because I suddenly feel the urge to take a break from the internet. I left Instagram because I'm sick of posting into a void. Was looking into Substack but it seems like it's slowly turning into Twitter / Instagram. I print and share photos with friends and family, but feel like any creative person want to put their work out there into the world, but it just doesn't seem like there's currently any place for the photographers to do that.

Lens Buying Advice Tamron 17-70 2.8 VS Sony 16-105 4 G?

(Preface, my problem with these lenses is that they are big and bulky, and im worried that they will make me just not bring out my camera to shoot, so I'm leaning away from the Tamron.)

Im deciding between these two lenses because im on a budget and I'm buying the a6600 for a great deal at $670 (student discount) I want to buy quality glass that will last me a long time. I know neither of these are super high quality, but I've been doing a ton of research, and for my needs it's pretty confusing. Every year over the summer I go to a few motorsports events at Watkins Glen, like IMSA and Gridlife. I love motorsports photography so I want a lens that will be capable enough for it, I checked in lightroom, and most of my photos are around the 100mm range, but im sure if I had less range I could just crop in a bit.

Thats only once a year though, I also love street photography, and on my old canon 70d, I used a Sigma 30mm 1.4 art lens. On the a6600 im buying the viltrox 35mm 1.7. But over all id like the shorter zoom range around 16mm so I can try more types of photography like landscape and such. I would get something like the Sigma 18-50 2.8, but that isn't nearly enough for motorsports and I'd have to buy a third lens which is totally out of my budget.

Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated!

Technical Help/Camera Settings Unknown artifact in mid-contrast pictures with Canon R8?

Some of my pictures with a Canon R8 and an RF 100-400mm get this strange "high contrast" artifact that gets blown out when post processing.

This image is 400% of a RAW file, before any post processing. Camera settings are:

Picture Style: Neutral

Clarity: 0

Shooting Creative Filters: disabled

Is this an optical aberration or an actual setting I'm missing?

Discussion/General Real estate photography yes or no?

Hi to all. I’ve done photography on and off for 20 years. Been published but I want to try something different. Has or does anyone do real photography? This wouldn’t be my income but my question is how did you get into it? Is it worth the effort etc. anything would help.

Editing/Post Processing Are there any online classes for Lightroom?

I took an in person class on using Lightroom. It was great, but very basic. I need more than just watching YouTube as I don’t learn that way or have patience to focus on YouTube videos. I need forced patience by it being a class where I can truly learn/ask questions/receive feedback. I’m mostly interested in something live on a virtual platform but open to at your own pace courses as well. Do these exist? Thanks so much!

Camera Buying Advice Should I buy the cheaper Canon R10 or more expensive Nikon z50 ii?

For context, I've done a lot of research at this point and have somehow stretched my budget from body+lens at 800$ to somehow 1300-1400 for everything in total. Its been such an endless rabbit hole, with each jump from reviews and advice for a slightly more expensive camera with slightly better features and now I've somehow ended up here. Anyway, I think I've settled on the body that I want. The Canon EOS R10. At used, Im seeing it for 700-750, which gives me some good room for higher quality lenses. I used to think canon had a pretty bad lens ecosystem but apparently there's an adaptor that I can use to get the older DSLR Lenses onto the r10, I've shot exclusively with canon and have always had a good time, so.. perfect, right? Well no.

The nikon z50 ii, at a more premium price, has been repeatedly recommended for me. I have been practically bombarded with "just save another 200 and get the nikon," and its eating away at me. I dont fully understand why the z50 ii is so much better, but im getting so frustrated because this is exactly how I went from 600->700->800. I don't know very much about the nikon or what the lens ecosystem is like, but apparently everybody loves it.

To sum up this post, should I continue the cycle again and save another 200 for the nikon which is loved by everyone, or can I keep the extra 200 and put it towards lenses? Does their lens ecosystem and its pricing really obliterate Canon the way people have been making it out to be? Am I gonna buy the canon and hate myself for not saving up just one more time in 6 months? Truly, is the jump that big?

I'm not a wildlife photographer, I dont want to shoot video whatsoever, most of my photography limitations are lens dependent but I'll list what I like to shoot just for some additional info:
Candid photography of my friends: I'm a college student and my friends and I love the outdoors, so a lot of my photography will be in soft golden hour lighting outdoors- I'm also going for a very particular look, which is kind of this hazy, dreamlike quality. Sunlight shining through hair, a soft atmosphere(Again, I know this leans more towards lens selection but a good AF would probably matter, especially since my friends will be moving)

Some street photography, I like walking out at night time and taking photos of bars with neon signs sorry if that isnt quite helpful. I wouldnt consider it "low-light", because im zoomed in on the well-lit signs, but besides that the only other avenue in which I think I'll be shooting in low light is indoor gatherings/parties. Nothing extraordinary here, just very typical flash portraits of my friends.

Thanks guys

(1) Budget, country, and currency: 700-750 for the body, 1300-1400 for everything in total. USA,USD.
(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs? Previously owned a tiny canon PowerShot, and have used a friends Canon T6 extensively. It's getting to the point where I cant keep asking to borrow their camera haha.
3)Mentioned above
4) Primarily photography.

Camera Buying Advice Best Bluetooth Printer for iPhone?

I’m a soon to be new mom and am looking for a Bluetooth printer that connects with iPhone. I know very little about this stuff, but I’m wanting something with decent quality to send with thank you notes, scrapbooks, memory books, etc. I don’t need anything super professional for wall photos, but I still good quality.
I’ve read that dye sublimation is better than ZINK for photo quality, and small credit card or square photos are fine- doesn’t have to be full size.
I’ve read the Canon SELPHY QX20 is good and also maybe the Kodak Mini 2 Retro.. any others or opinions on those??

Camera Buying Advice Is the Sony a6700 + Tamron 17–70mm f/2.8 right for couple travel photos?

Hi everyone! I’d appreciate some advice before buying a camera and lens.

  1. Budget, country, and currency: Buying in India. The Sony a6700 + Tamron 17–70mm f/2.8 VC would cost around US$1,800 here. I’m open to alternatives around the same price or less.
  2. What equipment do I have now? I currently use a OnePlus 11R 5G phone and don’t own a dedicated camera. I’m looking for better-quality photos of my wife and myself while travelling, especially at night, along with better travel videos.
  3. What kinds of subjects do I intend to shoot? Mainly my wife and myself at landmarks, city streets and scenic locations, including at night. Upcoming trips include Japan, Europe, Oman and Dubai.
  4. Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both? Both—travel photos and handheld 4K video clips. I’d like dependable autofocus and stabilization, a travel-friendly setup, and one versatile lens to avoid frequent lens changes.

I also plan to do a wildlife safari later, so affordable telephoto lenses to buy or rent matter. I don’t need a wildlife lens now.

Would the a6700 with the Tamron 17–70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Sony E-mount be a good choice for these needs, or would another camera system or lens suit me better? I haven’t bought anything yet and am open to other brands.

Thanks for your advice!

Camera Buying Advice Would you recommend Fujifilm for a compact secondary camera?

I currently shoot with a rebel t2i on 35mm and 85mm prime lenses (and kit lens). I love this camera and I have a lot of fun with it, but I’m always bummed out when I go out for the day and I see a good shot that I don’t have a camera for because it was too big to bring along for the day. I’ve tried using small digicams like the Cybershot but I just found that the quality isn’t what I want.

I’ve been looking at Fujifilm cameras and I’ve noticed they’re much more compact and easier to carry. I don’t have a lot of money though so I’d be hunting for a used budget option, and I’ve heard those have some difficulties with editing in Lightroom. I really enjoy editing my photos afterward but I do love when a photo looks good right out the gate. I know Fujifilm is good for taking photos without needing any post work, and while that is part of the appeal for me, I also just want to know that if I want to edit my photos, the option is still there.

Would you recommend this as a secondary camera? I’m mostly looking to have specific questions answered about it like how portable really are they? How is the editing process with Fuji compared to Canon? For a low budget is it even worth bothering? If so which models would you recommend?

I’m just anxious to have more opportunities to get good photos out on the street and such, and so I’m hoping a smaller body would give me that variety and that portability that I need to stop regretting missing all these good shots I see when I’m out without my big bulky camera on hand. any and all advice is helpful! Thanks everyone.

  1. Budget: ideally $300 at most, can be flexible but I’m willing to take my time to find a good deal on something used. Canada, $CAD

  2. Currently have a Canon Rebel T2i with a kit lens, as well as 35mm and 85mm prime lenses. It fits my needs fine in more deliberate circumstances, but I need something more portable/lighter and smaller for bringing with me everywhere.

  3. With this camera my intention is mostly shooting street photography and photographing elements for collages/compositions.

  4. Photography almost completely. Maybe occasional use of video if possible.

Camera Buying Advice First DSLR camera?

(1) Budget, country, and currency:

Budget is tight, preferably under $150 for the body. In the US, USD.

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?

I’ve got nothing right now.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?

I‘m not really locked in on any single subject/genre since I’m just starting out, but I‘m interested in landscape, portrait, maybe macro, and taking 3000 pictures of every cat I see.

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?

Photography.

Mainly looking at MPB, and much prefer that or anything else established rather than peer to peer like EBay.

I’m liking the D300, D90, and 50D, and leaning towards D300.

If you can recommend a good relatively budget lens (under ~$100) to go with it, that’s also appreciated. I don’t need a lens that can do all the mentioned subjects (like I’m assuming a landscape lens probably won’t be able to do any macro stuff), and I’ll buy others eventually as I figure out what genres I like most, but I just need something for the first few months.

I’ll also likely take some sort of online or in person course, so the lens and camera should ideally fit that.

Gear/Accessories Compact lighting ?

Hi everyone,

I’m a hobbyist photographer mainly focused on landscape photography, and I’d like to start learning outdoor portrait photography while travelling.

I have very little experience with lighting and want something compact, versatile, and travel-friendly that I can grow into.

I’m currently considering the Godox V1Pro. Is it a good choice, or would you recommend something else for my use case?

I’d appreciate recommendations for a simple setup that works well outdoors and can also be used off-camera with a small softbox/umbrella.

Thanks!

Film & Camera Theory Does the size of the front element of a lens affect how a mist filter looks?

Say you have two 50mm lenses, one is f2.8 and the other is f1.2. The 2.8 will of course have a smaller front element than the 1.2.

So if both lenses have the same mist filter on them and you photograph the same scene with both, will there be a difference in the mist effect? Both would be shot at the same aperture.

I mean on the 2.8, the sources of light (like the sky) are shining through less glass compared to the 1.2. They have the same field of view and you’re taking the same photo with both. Say there’s a neon sign in the shot, the light from that neon sign will be going through more glass on the 1.2. Not because of more elements, but because of the bigger diameter, right?

Maybe wrong about that?

Maybe this is a dumb question for reasons I’m unaware of.

(No idea which flare fits.)

Discussion/General Do I necessarily need PDAF for wildlife?

I'm considering newer cameras with PDAF (m43, specifically Olympus Em5.ii to om5) because it's better for tracking moving subjects, and it's the general advice for wildlife photography. However, the way I understand these advice is that if I limit myself to just still wildlife just chilling, even if it's birds (no BIF for me), then it should be ok?

I guess I'm asking this question to talk myself out of upgrading for a niche area of photography.

Editing/Post Processing How do you pick the sharp frame from a camera burst in Photos?

Photos groups iPhone bursts. A burst from a mirrorless or DSLR just lands as separate stills, so finding the sharp one means scrolling them one by one at actual size.

If you stay in Photos, how do you do that today? Do you leave Photos for Lightroom or something else just for this, or is there a step inside Photos I'm missing?
