Gameathlon: Age of Mythology LAN (Athens, September 11-13)
Hey r/AgeofMythology,
For those who don't know me. I've been playing Age of Mythology since as long as I can remember. I got into competitive Age of Mythology when I was 14 and have never looked back since. I went from tournament competitor, to top finisher to tournament host and from the outside looking at other titles like Age of Empires 2, Starcraft 2, League of Legends ect. and seeing the crazy LANs they would throw I was always like... one day, one day AoM will get put in the spotlight.
Well, wait no longer. I've already put out an announcement video where you can see what the event is all about but let me just tell you a few things here.
For those unfamiliar with Gameathlon. It is Greece's largest gaming convention. We're talking 20,000+ attendees over a weekend, LAN party setups, live tournaments, cosplay and much more. It's been running for years and it is a proper event. Not just some small local thing.
This year it is running from September 11-13 at a literal Olympic Arena in Athens. The Tae Kwon Do Olympic Arena to be specific. The qualifiers will also be hosted online on my twitch channel starting in Late June/Early July
The reason I'm excited beyond belief is because Age of Mythology made a name for itself partly because of the Greek mythology, because of the connection to the rich history that Greece has and because it made a generation know about things like the Trojan war, Achilles, Odysses and many other ancient war heroes.
If you're in Europe or thinking about a trip to Athens in September, check in, this is real. I'll be there, Moose will be there and the highest profile Age of Mythology competitors will be there as well.
The more noise the AoM community makes about events like this, the more of them we may get so leave a comment, share the news and lets get hype.

Retold Age of Mythology's Biggest LAN Event Since 2003 Kicks off TODAY
$10,000 Gameathlon: Athens LAN: Day 1
It's been a long road. People have travelled from across the globe; Brazil, America, Canada (Australia) and all over Europe to gather to put on one epic show. There will be 13 series, 13 series to decide it all. Every trick in the book is fair game however the only difference is your opponent is right across from you.. oh and the cameras, live audience, thousands of people and everything else as well.
Start time: 1500GMT
The Matchups:
Recon vs IamMagic. I can't tell you how excited I am to watch these two play. They are both legends and are at arguably the highest level they've ever been. Nerves and sleep are the only thing that can hold them back at this point.
Mosca vs Tunison are the next on the chopping block. Two practice buddies. Tunison has told me in the past that they played over 400 games against each other in preparation for S tier tournaments. To put it simply, these guys know each others game like the back of their hand but do they know how each other will play under the pressure of a LAN event? Time will tell.
TheRapl vs Grass is possibly going to be missed from our stream. It is all down to time. But this is a matchup that has some history. TheRapl reminded me of it yesterday - tricks have been used, advantages gained and drama ensued... that was a long time ago though. Hopefully we will get to see some of it!
Our final game is TheMista vs HUSKSUPPE. I've heard it all from TheMista, from I'm unprepared, I haven't played that much, I'm losing a bunch of games all the way to, yeah I'm as prepared as I could be and I'm unbeatable atm. So... yeah, it's psychological warfare from the go but he is up against a bit of a wildcard. SUPPE when fresh is one of the strongest players who just simply couldn't make it through the last series in the qualifiers. He beat everyone at this tournament at least once in the Qualifiers as well with the exception of Recon. He plays his own style that is very different to what everyone else does and he means business today. This is going to be a hell of a series to finish day one on.

A Myth Unit Tierlist!
I saw someone post about the Mummy in this subreddit yesterday so I figured I should make a tierlist for all myth units.
Let me know what you guys think!

Retold Eggy Buff Requests
Just an ordinary please-buff-Eggy thread, no further introductions. Feel free to agree, pick apart, or both.
Spearman:
Base attack moved from 6 > 7.
Cav mult moved from 2.0x > 1.5x
Frankly, one of Eggy's best eras was when they were messing around with 7 attack spears, and it's amazing what that small 17% damage boost represented. Eggy Classic fighting was much more relevant: they were slightly better raiders against vills, they were slightly less penalized against typeless heroes like Greek, and though they couldn't measure to Murmillos or Berserks, they also felt better when Eggy had a macro lead or earlier army. It was a period of time where Eggy did a lot of Classic fighting, and felt less helpless without Heroic.
Slinger:
-Mult vs. Archers from 2.25x > 3.0x
-Ptah's Electrum Bullets no longer has +10% attack boost.
-Sekhmet's Slings of the Sun now has the +10% attack boost.
Pretty straightforwards, boost baseline Slingers to be a proper anti-archer in Classic, and able to fill this role without Ptah. Slingers should be rolled by infantry or cavalry in Classic, not other anti-archers like Javelineers or Turma. Eggy deserves to be able to fight other anti-archers on even ground, it's their only early answer to archers, and their barracks are very archer-vulnerable otherwise, they need an anti-archer equal to the other civs, not 30% behind (which is currently the case when a Turma or a Javelineer fight a Slinger).
+10% attack boost moved from Ptah to Sekhmet to prevent early Slingers from outright dominating other anti-archers with too many early boosts.
Camel Rider:
-Desert Wind: Attack increase changed from 15% to +1.0x versus cavalry
Unlike the Spearman, I think the Camel actually should be capable of being a proper anti-cavalry unit. Historically, Camels have been pretty okay, correctly winning against Hippeus and Jarls, but not being quite as good as those units when fighting archers or infantry, and losing hard against Prodromos. However, what feels much less fun is when Camel Riders are losing to Tiger Cavalry, as it feels like the Egyptian went through the trouble of specifically picking Osiris, the Camel Rider god, and get crushed by a cavalry unit. I believe trading a 15% boost to everything for a 50% Spear-of-Horus-like boost helps solidify them as a unit that can take a fair trade against other late game power cavalry, helps better offset Yumi Horses with Sashimono Bannermen, all without adversely affecting how Camels perform against infantry like Hoplites, Dao Swords, or Berserks which Camels absolutely should lose against, and softening but not overturning how hard a counter Thracian Horses Prodromos are.
Monuments:
-Monument to Priests 150/150
-Monument to Pharaohs 200/200, builds around 20 seconds slower than now.
-Monument to Gods 250/250, builds around 30 seconds slower than now.
The problem with a lot of the monuments is the sheer amount of time it takes for them to pay off compared to their initial investment. No fancy new mechanics really need to be introduced, just make the initial investment cheaper, about at the level where a monument will 'pay itself off' after 4 minutes (valuing 1 favor as 10 resources).
Build time nerfs are villager work time nerfs, added to that Pharaohs and Gods don't feel quite like upgrades compared to Priests, more like equal.
~~~
In short, Eggy feels like they ought to have the Spearman closer to a generalist and the Slinger made into a true anti-archer so they aren't overshadowed by the Classic options of the other civs, while the Mythic anti-cav role can be handled by either Horus or Osiris, none of the Major gods are 'cheated' out of a Mythic anti-cav unit because Horus is not an option to Isis. Also, Egypt is just more fun with favor, if other civs can get their 'full' late game naturally by just making more Mikos, Oracles, and Favored Land, then Egypt should be able to naturally transition into their monuments too.
Mummies vs. Hippeus. Who wins?
The Mummies cost 75 favor, and 825 wood, which is ~1500 resources. The Hippeus cost 600 resources.
Myth units are supposed to counter human units, right? "Oh, well it is a ranged unit, it shouldn't be on the front line!" I threw in the Petsucos at the end to show you how other ranged myth units fare.
The Mummy is just absurdly weak. You could spend that favor on another Ancestors cast and get all of your minions immediately rather than waiting for things to die. u/iamboit I think this is one situation where recasting ancestors is better than buying myth units.
The Mummy Special Effect does not stack
Mostly adding this so that if anyone goes to Google asking this question can see how multiple mummies special effects work on top of each other.
In the example, the special effect is supposed to do 60 divine damage over the course of 15 seconds. But, if a unit is already cursed, then literally nothing happens. It’s just wasted. The three attacks should have done +180 damage, but the second 2 don't do anything.
This is possibly common knowledge, but I didn't know. I will delete this post if an update comes that *fixes* this.
Retold Mediocre but happy
I loved the original, used to spend hours playing skirmish against the AI on my GMA's busted ass computer. Recently purchased it again on my PS5 and I just feel so mediocre at the game, even with villager micromanaging basically off my hands if I wish.
I'm not really sure how I should be composing armies beyond "this unit sounds badass, I want them" and a vague sense of needing a Frontline, ranged, building damage, and heroes to take out myth units (also I like the idea of a hero leading the armies from a roleplay perspective if that makes sense). As far as management goes, I typically just create one large blob army with my heroes, ranged, and frontline and two or three small units to separate my healers, myth units, and/or siege units
I've never done PvP and I'm not sure I intend to but I would like to get better at the game anyways. I feel like my economy is weak, and I ALWAYS end up being raided before I can create a 'full' raiding party even when I am playing a faction/God that is built around early fighting.
I really like the genre of RTS despite never actually being good at them, and I thought perhaps this would be a perfect chance to improve my game. Any tips, tricks, or rabbit holes to invest in would be greatly appreciated. I want to take my love for this game and get into actually understanding how to play effectively.
TL;DR I have played this game many times over the years but I am pretty bad and want to know what I need to know to improve.
Retold How to use the Mummy effectively?
I have seen Magic talk about how good this unit is, but in a real game I just cannot get it to work well.
My biggest problem is that the mummy will auto-cast its special on the first thing it sees, not on the bulk of the army. So he usually only gets 1 or 2 conversions because of the way pathing works.
But when I turn off auto-cast, I can't get my mummies to cast their special with Shift-O like any other myth unit. If more than mummy is selected it just fails. For some reason I need to click on each mummy individually and press O to cast... which takes way too much time.
Is the unit just bugged? Are you guys able to make it work in your games? Why do the big players talk about this unit like it isn't just 25 favor soggy toilet paper :/
Retold Potential players with a play schedule
Hey I’ve posted a couple times on here and joined a couple discords but was wondering if anyone plays at specific times or would be down to set up some specific days and times to play. Some of the usual people I play with have different schedules as I so I haven’t been able to get on with them as much as I’d like
New Custom Hotkey Generator Tool and more Prostagma? updates
Hey what's shakin' everyone.
Sorry I meant to update sooner but 🤷🏼♂️ what can you do. Anyways, to any of those who are interested I thought I would share some updates because I've changed a lot, and although I don't have as much free time as I did over summer, I am still actively working on the site.
One of the main things I want to share tho is the new Custom Hotkey Creator Tool.
As far as I'm aware, this is the only one of it's kind available for Retold.
An annoyance of mine, this originally started because I was frustrated by the non-existent hotkeys for Shrines (once you pull a Miko off a Shrine there's no way to find them?? If you've built 10 shrines, good luck finding them).
I also had a hunch that the game should probably expose a function somewhere for selecting your resource workers (the same way you can click a resource in the UI). So eventually I started digging and sure enough I found exactly what I was looking for.
Now I don't want to oversell this but you can now make hotkeys for basically anything.
I've capped the maximum number of chainable actions to 5 for now, if anyone can tell me why they would need a hotkey that does more than that I will happily open this up for you.
This isn't some hack btw, the more actions you chain together the more oddly niche those commands be. But to give you some examples of useful things you can chain together, you can:
- Select all of your Lykaon Villagers and convert them
- Select all of your Hamadryads and set them to Tree mode
- Select all your Einherjar and have them use their special
Or you can do something simple like Find/Select your Obsidian Shards if you have any.
The possibilities are pretty much endless, like I said my number 1 priority was mapping out "select group of gold workers", food, etc.
You can also make scenario editor hotkeys as well, although to be honest when I got started browsing through the lists of actions I got kinda bored and just added the obvious ones that I thought would be most useful (is someone looking for a hotkey to move the sun?).
If there is an action you see that I've left out feel free to let me know and I can probably add it.
I know I said it before, and I do value your input, but especially so in this case because I'll be honest, I had some difficulty deciding on what should be the starting point for the Hotkey Generator so if you have any thoughts or suggestions definitely feel free to let me know.
What else is new?
Global Chat is now Global
I know a lot of you complained that you could only actually access the chat from the Agora page, that was just our v1 implementation and the updated site design now adds a docked chat bar that allows you to chat from any page across the site. We've also added the ability to reply to messages as well as delete sent messages.
Following and Friends Sync
You can now sync your Retold friends into Prostagma’s Following page. From here you can basically keep tabs on where all your friends are at, and Prostagma? will show you who's online, who's in a lobby or match, etc. and you can quickly copy the Match ID to your clipboard.
From Lobbies you can also filter games by Followed.
More importantly, your own linked Retold profile is automatically included in Following.
If Prostagma sees you in an advertised lobby or active match, your row gives you a direct View Lobby or View Match button. That takes you straight to the game and its player information.
This is obviously useful for Ranked matches if you want to scout your opponent really quick. With Prostagma open, you can go to Following, find yourself immediately, click once, and—boom—there is the match and its players.
I do not think we ever made that feature clear enough before, and I suspect quite a few people would find it useful.
Messages & Replay Sharing
Prostagma now has a private Messages system for sharing eligible replays with another registered user, optionally with a short note. It includes Inbox, Sent, Archive, and a recoverable Deleted folder that keeps messages for three days.
It is intentionally focused on replay sharing rather than being an unrestricted direct-message system.
If the site becomes busy enough, and DM's become a requested enough feature I might add them in the future, but at this time direct private messaging is not on the roadmap.
Public Build Order Editor
The Community Build Order Editor is now open to the public.
Signed-in players with a linked Retold identity can create a build, save a private draft, preview it through the real public layout, submit it for review, and resume editing if changes are requested. Once approved, it becomes publicly available with attribution to its author.
I might also make it so that these can be downloaded and made available offline, but we'll see.
I've also been working on a Build Order Emulator that allows you to see your resources at a given time and see how different timings play out, but translating it into a coherent UI has been a challenge to say the least. If enough people are interested I could possibly release a beta, but that all depends on what kind of feedback I get (if any).
Compendium and Tech Tree
The Compendium and Tech Tree are now much, much fuller. While before it only listed basic unit stats, it now includes full in-game details, as well as some "hidden" unit properties, or things that are never directly revealed by the game's UI.
Unit Comparison Tool
This was a requested feature that I finally got around to. It's pretty straightforward – you can search for and compare the base stats of any units in the game. The tool uses heatmap shading and a number of derived metrics for comparison. If there's any figures you feel that I've left out here – again, let me know and I will add them in for you.
Activity Trends
We launched a full Activity Trends page that tries to answer more useful questions than simply showing one live player count:
- How busy is Retold overall right now?
- Is that normal for this particular weekday and hour?
- How has activity changed over time?
- What are typical match sizes and formats?
- What do recent rating distributions look like across the separate ranked ladders?
Where the available data uses different methods or covers different populations, we keep those distinctions visible instead of blending everything into one misleading number.
Tournament Rankings
We also launched a tournament-only ranking system based on validated S-tier Retold results.
I decided not to go with a standard ELO based system here and instead It uses Whole-History Rating and counts each played map as evidence, so a 3–0 and a 3–2 do not tell the system the same thing.
One of the main reasons that I went with this system is that the model is also retrospective: later tournament results can clarify how strong an opponent really was. Losing to someone who later proves to be one of the best players is therefore treated differently from losing to someone whose later results do not support that same strength.
It is separate from ladder ELO and also includes visible uncertainty, so players with limited tournament evidence are marked provisional rather than presented with false confidence.
And one correction
A few people repeatedly pointed out that parts of our stats appeared to be using the wrong current patch number.
They were right.
I am genuinely terrible at checking messages and notifications, so that feedback could have helped us earlier. That one is on me.
We corrected the current public God Stats patch to 19.17020, preserved ambiguous or conflicting evidence instead of silently forcing it into the current patch, and refreshed Prostagma’s canonical game data for that release.
Retold Looking for a good defensive/turtle god
It's been too long since I saw anyone talking about what got might be the best for a specific strategy, I'm very casual at the game and wanted to know if turtle is a viable strategy now, and also want to know what are the best gods for said strategy. I tried to find build orders for some gods like Isis, Hades and Nuwa, but they seem to be all outdated. If anyone knows a good build order for a defensive god to get the game started, I'd appreciate it very much.
Retold Heavenly Spear was released 1 year ago.
I can hardly believe it's already been a year (and a day) since this expansion launched.
What are your thoughts on it now that we've been playing it for a year? Personally, I think it's still the most consistently good of the major expansions of the Retold era and the Japanese gods are still one of the factions I gravitate towards.
