Sun bleached stop sign

Hope this counts. This stop sign is pretty much completely white from being in the sun for so many years without being replaced. I’m sure the salt and road chemicals in the winter don’t help either.

[this is flair] Poor Pummeled iPhone Case

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

This iPhone case has been in my family since before most modern infrastructure existed.
Legend says it originally belonged to my great-grandfather, who purchased it sometime around 2009 after trading three chickens and a Nokia 3310. It survived the 2010 iPhone era, the rise of Instagram, the death of Vine, several cracked screens, two divorces, and at least one incident involving a riding lawn mower.
The scratches aren’t scratches. They’re historical records.
That dent on the bottom? 2012.
The giant gouge on the back? 2014.
The mysterious burn mark? Nobody is allowed to ask about that anymore.
The missing corner? Allegedly happened during the Great Basement Incident of 2017.
At some point, an iPhone was apparently placed inside this thing, although nobody remembers which iPhone. The phone has since been replaced several times, but the case remains. It has outlived every device it was originally designed to protect.
Apple stopped making whatever this case was intended for approximately 37 technological generations ago, but somehow it refuses to die.
I don’t own this case.
I am merely its current caretaker.

Dean Doherty videos himself repairing tools, and a lot of them are very well worn. This Makita needed a new switch and bearing and is now back in business.

A spud barge

Thumbnail

A spud barge is a flat-deck work barge that can hold itself in place using long vertical steel poles called "spuds". The spuds are lowered through guides in the barge and driven or dropped into the river or harbor bottom, effectively pinning the barge in position so it doesn’t drift with wind, current, or passing traffic. They’re commonly used as stable work platforms for dredging, pile driving, bridge work, dock construction, and marine repair. Unlike a normal barge that usually has to be held in place by anchors or tugboats, a spud barge can more or less “plant its feet” and stay put.

This one is easily 30... probably more... years old. New ones cost $100K so there is incentive to keep your old one floating.

What pushes me that way is the combination of riveted aluminum construction, the very workmanlike fabrication, old spud-well arrangement, heavy steel hardware, and more than anything the amount of accumulated modification. It has been patched, reconfigured, drilled, welded, mounted to, stripped and repaired repeatedly over a long working life.

[this is flair] Tip of the Butress of Cologne Cathedral from 13/14th century after centuries of being exposed to the elements

Thumbnail

In the third and fifth images you can see the backside is more weathered, and was likely the side facing the wind. Exactly how long it was up there is not clear, as the weathered parts were replaced one by one over time, with all originals from 13/14th centuries being replaced by the cathedrals full completion in the late 19th century.

This specific tip is on display at the Sienemgebirgs museum at Königswinter.

I’ve used this wallet I got all the way back in high school since December of 2016, and have been too stubborn to retire. Thought it was time to post here as all traces of the old Reaper logo it had are now completely gone. Final image is what it looked like when I bought it
