❔Question/Advice❔ How often are we bathing our torties?

EDIT: Wow, thank you everyone for the resounding NEVER (I'm sure Sabrina thanks you all too). I saw a post on a different subreddit of a shorthair cat after a groom and thought wait- am I supposed to be giving her baths too? Rest assured she has not gotten a bath from me and only will if medically necessary.

I saw a handful of comments addressing her weight, and didn't even think about the possibility that she might not be able to reach her dry skin in question to groom because of her chunk, and just the correlation in general. We've recently put her on a strict prescription weight loss diet recommended by her vet, so I'm hoping over the coming weeks as she slims up a little her skin may clear up too. If not, or if it seems to start bothering her, she may respond well to the supplemental oils in her food that many of you recommended.

Original post:

I know everyone is different, different tolerances, indoor vs. outdoor, etc. My girl isn't too fond of water (runs away when we turn on a faucet or the shower). She's also my first cat, so I'm looking for some seasoned advice.

My Weenie is a 100% indoor cat and smells like sunshine and rainbows, but she has had some dry, flaky skin that comes and goes since I adopted her in December (it doesn't seem to bother her- I don't see her scratching often)

If she stays inside, and continues smelling neutral/clean, is there any reason to bathe her? Or is her grooming herself enough?

❔Question/Advice❔ Guys do I just get another tortie and name her Pumpkin or is that like too much? My baby passed away almost a month ago now. I am not over it. My house feels empty.

I just want her back. My beloved Pumpkin. I can’t go a day without thinking about her. She was my world.

❔Question/Advice❔ My kitty doesn't let me pet her

Post image

This is my sweet Brenna. She's been with me for about 4 months and is about 16 months old. She doesn't avoid me, but she won't let me pet her.

I'm disabled and am restricted to my bed. Brenna spends a lot of time in the room with me, either sitting on the foot of my bed, often reaching out her paw and resting it against my foot, or up at the top of the bed next to me and looking out the window (like in the pic.) She does have several other options where she can sit in this room, including a cat tree, soft pillows on the floor and other furniture, but usually chooses to be on the bed with me. She'll even crawl up on my chest and stand there for a while before wandering off elsewhere. So I don't get the feeling that she dislikes me or is afraid of me, but if I try to pet her, she just quietly walks away for a bit.

She's different with my husband and the friend who takes care of me while my husband is at work. They can both pet her, though not for very long. She spends some time out in the living room with them in the evening, though she doesn't sit as close to either of them as she does when she's in the bedroom with me. My caretaker gives her her food, but other than that neither of them do much in the way of playing with her or giving her treats - both of which I do regularly.

Is there anything else I can or should be doing to encourage her to let me show her affection? I appreciate any suggestions or advice any of you might choose to offer! Thank you in advance!

❔Question/Advice❔ My kid is very tiny as an adult, is that normal for this breed?

She hates being touched so I treat her more as a roommate. Like, she's aware that I'm much larger and hates being touched unless I squat to her level

❔Question/Advice❔ What are your torties called?

Somebody dumped this beautiful girl in our garden, shes just been spayed so now its time to name her but am struggling. We already have a lot of strays that we’ve rescued and noticed we end up with names ending in a “Y” sound so need to avoid that-we need some inspiration as nothing is jumping out on us yet

❔Question/Advice❔ is she a tortoiseshell or a calico?

i always thought she was a tortoiseshell but someone said she not since she has white so is she a calico or can tortoiseshell have white markings too?

she’s almost two years old, rescued her from my crazy cat lady house. she was maybe 6-9 weeks old and her mom rejected her. so we took her in and named her willow. she’s an absolute menace but she is such a sweetheart at once.

❔Question/Advice❔ overbrushed tortie?

hi all! it’s finally warming up where i am (hadn’t hit the 20°Cs consistently until about two weeks ago) and i’ve noticed my girl nagomi has been shedding more than normal. she doesn’t like brushing much, so i don’t normally brush her that often (maybe once a month?). i decided to give her a big brushing session today since i assume it’s her winter coat that’s shedding, but now her fur looks much thinner on her back and i’m worried i might have brushed too much of her coat out.

essentially, i just kept brushing as long as massive clumps were still coming out and only ended up stopping when she was clearly upset with me about it. she’s a shorthair but she has very fine, soft fur that’s very staticky, and it’s a very different coat from my last cat (also a domestic shorthair, but with far thicker hairs and a bit more grease in her coat).

it’s hard to identify visible patchiness since she’s a tortie, but her coat colours definitely look blurrier on her back compared to her legs and belly, where the striping and mottling is much more high-contrast. (i was only really able to brush her back and sides, and didn’t get to those areas yet.)

does anyone have advice? is it really just her winter coat coming out all at once, or did i overdo it? 😓

(photos 1-3 are from today, 4 and 5 are from one month ago!)

EDIT: thanks for all the kind advice and comments!! seems that nothing's out of the ordinary, but i'll skip the furminator from now on and i'll get her a softer brush she can tolerate more regularly. much appreciated, nagomi says thank you too! 🫶

❔Question/Advice❔ Tortie trait or vet concern

Post image

We found this darling first of July. She is under a year old, but not super young and was pregnant. We had her spay aborted on the 16th. She was a street cat and a little underweight. Now that she has been with us over a month she quickly gained weight, but she still acts like she is starving. We had to get chip feeders because she was stealing my other cats food. They get fed 3 times a day and in between meals I have to fight her off people food (we don't feed people food, but I'm sure she got some while outside) and she will even attempt to walk across hot stoves to reach pans (I have to lock her in another room now while cooking). Is this a tortie thing? I have rescued strays before over the past 20 odd years and never had a cat this bad. Should I have her checked to see if she lacks the ability to feel full?

she's the sweetest angel I've ever had and also the craziest 🥹 excited to see her tortitude blossom ✨️👼 her mom dropped her off at our neighbors backdoor, newborn and didn't want her so if anyone raised a bottle baby, I'd love to hear any thoughts, advice or expectations! I think she's about 7 weeks and is of course eating solids and drinking water at this point. love and thanks to all the angel-baby parents on here!

❔Question/Advice❔ Lost my dearest tortie, Olive, in February. Her bonded mate is lonely without her. I saw this sweetie at the Petsmart—should I get her?

My heart literally aches without Olive. I miss her so much.

I don’t ever want to feel like I’m replacing her, but I know my other cat misses the company and companionship. Is it time? Is it a sign? She was the only tortie there.

❔Question/Advice❔ First time tortie owner. She's so talkative.

Post image

I just adopted this sweet girl Clove yesterday and it's my first time with a tortie. She's so talkative! She kept me up until 4am last night talking 🤣 also she growls? I've never heard a cat growl before. I thought they only hissed! But this girl growls when she hears noises outside she doesn't like.

Does anyone else have similar experiences? Also, what can I expect with tortitude?

❔Question/Advice❔ Is this a dilute tortie?

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

Edit: I keep getting the same comment yes I plan to spay my cat and all the babies. My cat is usually inside and she got out one day went missing for a few days and then came back. Then I noticed a random cat coming into my yard so I put 2 and 2 together. I live on 3 acres and my nearest neighbor is like 2 miles away so its not like I was planning for this lol🤣

My girl gave birth today and my sister says she thinks this one in front is a dilute tortie. I had never seen one this light of color so I'm not for sure. Either way I'm in love, I'm happy to be a grandma now🤣

Update: theres 5 babies now. My 6 and 3 yr old kiddos woke up to check on them and then after accidentally witnessing a birth (I thought she was done having babies after 4 of them) I asked my 6 year old if her and her sister were grandma's too and she said "No we're kitten managers" 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

Trying to settle a debate... would you consider her a tortie or a calico?

She definitely has the attitude of a tortie 🤣
