Local models will be just as good in 5 years if not sooner. But I guess they could train them tattle tell.

The whole point of running a model locally is that you have control over its network environment. You could run it entirely on a local network with no access to the internet if you wanted to. Meaning even if it's trained to spy on you and report out, it can't.

Qwen isn't exactly frontier quality but it's already very good and local.

I've been reading that the open source AI is 4-5 months behind frontier models.

I guess I should have been more specific. Yes there’s open models like Qwen. But they usually require a pretty expensive card to run outside the smallest models. But my bet is in 5 years even your phone will run pretty impressive models, and therefore be way more accessible. That will give governments less control.
