I’m a developer

I’m very surprised that there isn’t more discourse surrounding this. All of the sketchy shit down by big tech and AI companies is actually done by 20/30-something year olds making a lot of money. The discourse around billionaire CEOs completely ignores the corporate employees who get paid a lot of money (most of it in equity) because it’s not convenient to mention that the working class within these companies also make a shitload of money.

I’m totally for developers also being held accountable. They do it for the same reasons leaders use to justify their actions. We make a lot of money and there’s a lot of incentive to make more. These IPOs will make the working engineers multi millionaires overnight.

People do what they’re paid to do. Regulate the industry but the employees shouldn’t be blamed here unless they’re doing something we collectively agreed is wrong.

Nobody is mad at people working in the military who do what they’re told, but when it comes to Lockheed or OpenAI employees now they are the problem. They’re just workers.

Yeah it’s a dumb argument, but a lot of the discourse around leadership itself is dumb and you can draw some logical lines here to people being angry and devs who themselves have a lot to gaij

>people working in the military

Australia does, we just got finished dumping our SAS child murderin' commando into the dustbin of history. Same should happen to AI devs and AI CEOs.

I mean, you send the current batch of Devs to jail, and then they get replaced with a new batch, and we are back at square 1.

Unlike nuclear weapons, the knowledge is not unique and doesn't take a decade to acquire.

The knowledge to make nuclear weapons isn't unique or take a decade to acquire, basically anyone with the money for the equipment can make one.

Making a nuclear weapon really isn't all that hard, now that the problem has been solved and the gist of the idea is known.

Sure, if you were that inclined, you can find the blueprints online for a 10 kt device that can easily be built and transported to blow up a mile of whatever city is close by.

How often do devs get a say in the direction the company goes? They’re filling jobs that will be filled regardless of their moral perception of what they do; therefore, those who’re directly involved and actually plan the future of the company should be held accountable—not the employees.

We’re not talking about Auschwitz here🥴

We’re talking about the lowest of the low ranks here who’re programming. If we take issue with what the company is doing, then it’s on their leadership—not the basic workers.

You people act as if researchers and the like are acting with malice and are deserving of punishment.
