Isn't releasing it for a cost, then making it freemium out of the kindness of their hearts later the new meta?

Remember when that was the whole plot of the last season(?) of The Guild like 15 years ago? Hardly a new meta.

They told you when it went ea it would be free after 1.0 in the early access disclaimer on the store page.

That’s the last time I pay someone to beta test for them. At least until PoE3

GGG is one of the most transparent gaming companies. If you followed it at all you knew exactly what you were getting into.

They explicitly said that Early Access was a true early access, in that it was not complete and subject to drastic changes. They said from the get go that the game would be free when 1.0 comes out. I'm not sure what else they could have done to signal that you were buying a beta product.

It's almost exactly what they did with PoE 1 closed beta. The game was always intended to be free, but if you wanted in closed beta you needed to buy in.

Edit: They also disclaim exactly all of this right on the Steam Page Early Access Banner. Some of it has been edited, but none of this was ever a secret, you just paid money for something you didn't completely understand, and that's 100% on you.

Yeah the support gets you access + some microtransaction currency. PoE1 did the same exact thing so it is wild that people get so weird

Wait oh I legit thought the game would be free for 1 day as a trial. Good news!

My bad for not reading the fine print

Sounds like you didn’t read anything and chose to get upset about it

It was a major focus of the announcement and their marketing materials. They didn't just slip it in where they thought nobody would look.

Ehh that's Epics speciality. (Or rather giving away other games for free)

Blizzard tried it with Overwatch 2. Not sure if that went well or not. Atleast the community didn't receive it too well when it happened. Idk about the monetary side.

The meta is releasing a free gamemode (mainly BR) some time after launch and heavily monetizing it.

That's also what i could see happening here. Similar to RedSec (just not a BR). The base game is paid and GTA online is a seperate free game, but heavily monetized

To be fair, most hate on Overwatch 2 was NOT because of it going free to play, but because they decided to delete loot boxes, thus deleting the only way to earn skins by playing. Which later they backtracked and overwatch 2 became very popular once again.
