Mod Post VERY General Guide to Legality

Users have requested a general guide or sticky regarding legality and laws. This is challenging because this sub has reach worldwide and legality varies significantly depending on location.

With that in mind, below is an extremely general guide to get users on a track towards learning about what is legal to collect, possess, modify, transport, sell, and buy. Being hyper-specific in this guide to all areas is not realistic.

At the end of the day, please bear in mind the onus is on you, the possessor of the item in question, to learn the legality of the item. Look it up yourself first, try to gather information, then ask the sub. Information presented here and by users is guidance and not to be taken as legal guidance.

If getting irrelevant information for your country from other users is bothersome, please ensure you give your location in the title and body of your post. Users may still get it wrong; please give them grace.

A VERY GENERAL GUIDE:

It is up to you to know the laws of your respective location regarding animal remains. This includes picking up items, possessing them, receiving them as a buyer, and as a seller.

This is a world-wide sub with a significant portion of members being from the USA. You may find users' responses to be USA-centric as a result.

Please put your location in your post. This helps users respond best and may (may) avoid users sharing information on laws that are not relevant to you.

Because YOU are ultimately responsible for looking up your area's laws, please take the time to search online. Laws vary by country, state, province, etc. For most locations, your area's division of wildlife services or hunting department tends to be most helpful. Animal control, pest removals, or wildlife catchers/rehabbers generally cannot answer legality questions. When speaking with a representative, we recommend recording their full name for your future reference.

We cannot possibly outline all laws for all areas here.

However, below is a list of laws that have far-reaching legal standing.

MBTA:

The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 ("MBTA"): Read more at this link (via the USA's Fish and Wildlife Service). The MBTA has implications for the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Russia. For outside of the USA, please look into the country's version of the MBTA which may have a different name.

- A list of birds NOT PROTECTED via the MBTA is found at this link. It is generally easier to look up legal birds compared to illegal birds, as the number of legal birds is less.

- Laws surrounding birds typically also apply to nests, eggs, feathers, and remains regardless of if found dead, nest empty, shells empty, etc.

CITES:

The Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES): In short, CITES is an international agreement and system of identifying and protecting vulnerable or endangered animals. CITES-protected animals can require special permits to harvest, hunt, buy, sell, move over state or country lines, and more. Some CITES-protected animals cannot be possessed in any form. Either can apply to creatures found already dead, hunted, etc.

- Information about CITES in general can be found here.

- An overview of CITES "Appendices" ("levels") is here.

- An index of CITES species can be found here and can be looked up by keyword.

Notes on Sub Policies:

Please note that flippancy towards legality ("I don't care, I found it..."), blatant illegal acts ("How do I sell this without getting in trouble?"), and similar are not tolerated on this sub and can result in post/comment removal and/or being banned. This includes helping or advising someone knowingly regarding an illegal act.

It can be annoying at times to see people constantly asking for or giving information about legality. It is the nature of this sub. If it is bothersome to you, then this sub may not be a good fit for you.

Be kind if someone gives you information on legality. It is meant in good faith.

Additionally, many countries' legal governing bodies regarding animal parts are present in this sub. It is wise to remember that posting incriminating things here is unwise. If you are instructed to return animal parts to the wild or dispose of something, seriously consider doing so.

Specific to the USA:

This subreddit has a significantly higher number of users in the United States compared to elsewhere. For this reason, additional resources for the USA can be found below:

- Amphibians, reptiles, etc. tend to be protected or restricted in states via the Lacey Act. https://www.fws.gov/law/lacey-act

- Bat species are commonly protected in the USA. Information can be found here. https://ecos.fws.gov/ecp/report/species-listings-by-tax-group?statusCategory=Listed&groupName=Mammals&total=80

Note: many bat species are imported from countries with lax protection laws: these bats are unsustainably sourced or poached and buying them is discouraged. Rabies is a real threat: leave any bat you encounter alone!

- Marine mammals are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and others. More information can be found via NOAA's website. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species-directory/marine-mammals

- The Endangered Species Act for the USA focuses on protected animals and can be viewed here. https://www.fws.gov/law/endangered-species-act

Please forgive formatting errors or typos. The OP, Mod Meowza, wanted to get this posted but doesn't have a great device for doing so at the moment. They will be fixed when Meowza is back home. Thank you for your grace.

THIS IS NOT AN AD and out of respect for the rules of this sub, I won't share what I sold or where. I just wanted to share some good news and I'm feeling very proud of myself! I'm feeling hopeful that there's a chance I can turn this hobby into something more.

Fur/Pelt Help Found a star nosed mole

I have found this star nosed mole a few days ago, recently deceased. (located in Wisconsin) Just through a quick google it looks like they are legal to keep but if not please tell me!
I am hoping to keep the pelt with the feet and nose but am unsure of how to go about skinning it and preserving the nose if I can? Unless it would be an instance where I would have to replace it?
Any tips or recommendations would be helpful as I am an amateur to this!

Taxidermy MOUNT Help Ideas for presenting this skull

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hello! I'm a Environmental Science student and yesterday we had a field practice on some mangrove swamps, while I was walking on the coast dune I found this skull. I think that it was from a dog and I took it as a souvenir

I'll give it to a friend who practices taxidermy so he can give it the proper treatment and preserve it.

I want to present it on my desktop as a decoration to remember that crazy day, but I don't want to just put it ok the desktop, im thinking about putting on some type of elevator base, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea or there's better ideas to make it look right

So, I thought that asking on this subreddit could help me, any recommendations or ideas?

Obviously, all of this with total respect for the animal that it belonged to

(sorry if I'm not using the correct flair, I can change it if it's necessary!)

This is my first time properly doing taxidermy and I'm so scared to screw it up. This is my little baby rabbit after being covered in salt and rolled. Is this too much salt? Or not enough?

"How Do I...?" Fallopian Tubes

I am absolutely thrilled that they let me keep my tubes. I see a few posts, but none answering my specific questions.

I thought they would give me the specimen in 10% Formalin. It appears they put them in saline.

I can get the Formalin in ~5-7 days, but everything I'm reading says they'll start deteriorating. Currently have them in the fridge & waiting on a call back from the local vet to see if they'll sell me some Formalin.

Worst case scenario, does anybody have recommendations? 91% isopropyl in the fridge until I can get the Formalin?

I would like to not lose these babies. I've been waiting so long!

I have distilled water, 70% ethyl, and 91% isopropyl coming

"How Do I...?" Wet Specimen Storage Questions (Human Uterus) NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
17 Upvotes

So my girlfriend just recently had a hysterectomy and asked to receive it back from pathology afterwards so she can have it as a wet specimen in her taxidermy collection. Just picked it up today. We thought it would come in a jar of formalin but it didn't. Which is confusing because they gave her a formalin safety sheet when we picked it up. So we were wondering what the best possible way to preserve it is so it won't get ruined in the waiting process of us trying to get the materials needed. Does anyone have any advice on the safest way to store it for now? Should we put it in the fridge or freezer? Will the freezer give it freezer burn or ruin it at all? Or is it good to sit out since they most likely used formalin on it already? The safety sheet that came with it says to store it between 59°f to 77°f but is that only if it's full of formalin?

She sent a message to her doctor asking if she's supposed to put it in the fridge or not. We're just waiting for a response. Hopefully that'll be tomorrow.

& Where do we even find a good glass jar to preserve it in long term? What percentage of formalin do we get? Are there any specific brands to stay away from? How would she go about making it into the wet specimen that sits in the jar? What's the correct process? We see other reddit threads saying things need to soak for a bit first?

This will be her very first wet specimen project. So any tips will be appreciated.

"How Do I...?" specimen got moldy before i even got to preserve it

for context: my pet tarantula passed away due to old age and i wanted to preserve him by taxidermy. i placed him in a small cardboard box about 3 days ago because i was going to preserve him a few days later once i got my materials. it was an honest mistake of mine to forget about how humidity can cause bacteria and mold to grow.

just right now, i checked on the box just to find out that white mold has been growing on him. i only plan on removing his abdomen as i was going to replace it with a crystal.

how do i remove the white mold without ruining my specimen?

"How Do I...?" Can i use isopropyl alcohol or ethanol for preserving a cane toad?

My mom found a cane toad just wandering around our house and it has paradites is what she described. She caught it and gave it to me as someone who has interest in this kind of things. Currently its inside a plastic jar and im gonna buy some things first thing in the morning. As someone who is not experience on this kind of stuff. Can i just buy an isopropyl alcohol or ethanol in a market to preserve it? And if there are other ways, i want to hear it too while i also look online on ways to preserve it. Im looking to extract the parasite if possible as well as the frogs bones. Putting it on the freezer is not an option for me as we only have one freezer and its for foods only. Tnx in advance for answering
