Looking for software Any free sofware you rarely see recommaned but is actually great?

I’ll go first:

Zettlr: a markdown editor that works great for long-form writing or research. Super lightweight but packed with features.Kdenlive: not totally unknown, but I’m surprised more people don’t mention it. It’s a free video editor that’s actually usable for real editing, not just cutting clips.

Lunacy: a design app that’s basically a Figma alternative but works offline. Good for quick UI mockups when I don’t want to open a browser.

TeraBox: 1TB of free cloud storage. I mostly use it for large files I don’t need to access often (game clips, old project folders, etc.). Not perfect, but it’s free and has helped me clear a ton of space. Please share yours with me!

Looking for software Looking for a free PDF editor that isn’t a scam

I’m looking or an online free pdf editor that I can edit a resume with. Reading it out doesn’t seem like a big ask. But let’s click export and oh shit 20-70 dollar subscription fee. Suck my dick imma just get a repack of adobe ffs. How do you even justify a price like that? Server space don’t cost that much and neither does maintaining a fuckass domain fame like “free pdfeditor.com”. Sorry about the rant but I just used around 12 free pdf editors in the past hour that said fuck you pays us for ur shit last minute.

Looking for software I'm ending my relationship with Google Chrome. I'd recommend you do too. Chrome is an abuser of your privacy and is opposed to the fundamental philosophy of the internet, freedom of information.

Hey I know the browser wars are serious but I think they just got MORE serious. I've always been an avid chrome user but enough is enough. They don't care about your privacy. They are mining our data for their own maniacal purposes (so many maniacal purposes, too many to list), and all we are to them are a bunch of cattle to feed advertisements to.

The YouTube adblock war is the final straw for me. Google's vendetta against adblock plus has actually made it very hard to watch miss Rachel with my two year old on YouTube. I don't want my two year old watching any predatory ads. The final straw for me anyways was when my computer began to lag and stutter with YouTube open. Later I found out the reason was the adblock war.

Today I searched the words "Mass Flow Meter" and all I received were endless product advertisements. I just want to learn about the concept.

So I decided that is it. I uninstalled chrome and I'm going to do something else. I think Mozilla firefox. If not that, then maybe Duck Duck Go.

"Don't be evil" was originally what drew me to Google. Those days are long gone. I want the internet to do what it was promised to do. Be a global hub of information. This is not Google's plan. They want to own the internet and extract all the wealth they can, like a giant parasitic leech.

Goodbye chrome. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Looking for software How to host a website that's just a PDF for free, forever

I want to put my resume on a QR code on my business cards, and I think the best way to do so would be to host a website that's just my resume PDF, and then link that to the code.

Then I can update the resume on the website and the code will still take the user to an updated resume. (Please correct me if there's a better way to do this or if I'm wrong I don't really know what I'm talking about)

But if all the website is gonna be is just a PDF I don't want to pay for a domain or to host it, any recommendations?

So far infinity free seems like it could be good, has anyone worked with that before?

Looking for software Looking for screenshot apps

I am looking for screenshot apps. It always bothers me when I take a screenshot in my laptop, there is already built in function in the laptop provided by Microsoft to take screenshots but it's hard to save it.

I want an app that can take screenshots quickly, I also want to transfer those those screenshots elsewhere like I want to send someone the screenshot in WhatsApp. It would be better if the app stores screenshots.

Are there apps like these?are they popular?

Any suggestions??

Looking for software What’s everyone using to share one mouse/keyboard across multiple computers?

I’ve got a Windows desktop and a MacBook on the same desk and I’m tired of switching peripherals. Looked into Synergy and ShareMouse , synergy was very bad the connection kept dropping alot and share mouse is absurdly expensive but curious what people are actually using day-to-day. What works, what’s janky, what’s worth it ?

Looking for software What is the best transcription software for interviews that I should prioritize?

I’m in my third year doing qualitative research, and I still have around 40 interviews left to transcribe. Most are about 60 to 90 minutes, and some are focus groups with four people talking over each other.

I tried running a model on my laptop first. A one-hour interview took almost three hours to process. Doing that for 40 interviews just isn’t realistic.

Cloud tools are way faster, but I have consent forms that limit where the data can go. I don’t want to find out later that I messed up my ethics approval.

So what matters most to you? Local processing, speaker separation, handling field-specific terms, export formats, or how much time you spend cleaning everything up?

I’m not expecting a transcript I can trust without checking it. I just want a searchable draft with speaker labels that are right most of the time. I'll do the verification myself.

Looking for software What do you use for a company knowledge base that people keep updated?

Our internal knowledge base is a mess and Im trying to work out what other teams do. We have a wiki but no one trusts it. Someone writes a page, its fine for a month, then the process changes and nobody updates it so half of it is just wrong now. The real answers end up in slack or in the head of whoever set it up and when they leave its gone.

Ive tried the usual, assigning owners, review reminders, a quartely cleanup which yep, it works for a few weeks then everyone gets busy and it slides again. I keep going back and forth on whether its a tool problem or just a people problem.

I would like to know whats working for you, what do you use and how do you get people to keep it updated?

Looking for software TeamViewer alternatives - personal use

What's everyone using? I've fallen foul of the 3 managed devices limit TV added recently.

I'm looking for something that ideally is fully web-based as far as the main 'technician' device goes. Use case is to access my own home devices plus some family members devices for the occasional (and completely unpaid) remote help.

I don't even mind paying a small amount, but £68/month for my use case is clearly stupid.

Looking for software Best WordPress Hosting Services?

I’ve come across a few discussions here on Reddit about the best web hosts, and some of the debates have been pretty insightful.

But I’ve noticed that the hosts people often recommend aren’t always the best fit for WordPress sites.

Which web hosting companies are the best and easiest to use specifically for building e-commerce websites with WordPress? Ideally, I’m looking for something affordable, preferably shared hosting.

WP Engine seems to be best option to me RN

Looking for software Best payroll software for small business?

Hi everyone, what might be the best payroll service for small businesses with less than 10 employees? Do you have any recommendations? What are you thoughts?

I've been looking into ADP and Paychex. I have 4 W2 employees, and a 1099 independent contractor.

I'm thinking it's very easy since we only need a service that 1) Sends Direct Deposits, and 2) Generates detailed paystubs to calculate tax retentions for accounting.

What's your experience with these services? What's the best one? Would you recommend Payroll software instead? I appreciate any advice.

Looking for software Software where you could import pdf files and draw on them?

Hi everyone! I started college and a lot of the practice sheets I've been given are in the forms of PDF files. So far I've gotten by putting the answers on paper, but I find I do better when I can scribble and annotate directly on the sheet. Is there a software where I could do this for my touchscreen laptop? Thank you so much :)

Looking for software What is The Best App to Restore Old Photos?

It doesnt really need to be an app per say, it can be a website or something. I have a bunch of old family photos from the 90s that I'd love to restore, and since it's a bunch of photos, it needs to be a service that is reasonably cheap.

EDIT: I had the best results with PhotoPerfectAI.com

Looking for software Excellent Free OCR Software

After scouring the internet and Reddit in particular for good free OCR software, I was unfortunately underwhelmed by the suggestions. Most of the threads are archived and out of date, plus the suggestions are not particularly workable.

Hence, here is my recommendation for good free OCR software: NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner). You can download it, run it offline, and most importantly, it's FREE. 10/10 recommend. If you have a better FREE suggestion, please leave a comment here.

Looking for software What’s the best tool to redact sensitive info before sharing with clients?

I used to think redaction was just a final formatting step before sending a file out. Black out a few lines, export to PDF, done.

Then I learned that what you see on the page isn’t always what’s inside the file.

Metadata, OCR text behind scanned PDFs, tracked changes, hidden layers. It’s easy to assume something is gone when it’s only visually covered. That realization made me rethink how we handle documents before sending them to clients.

We’ve relied on Adobe Acrobat for years since it’s already in our stack, but the workflow still feels very manual and dependent on whoever is doing the review. Lately I’ve been exploring more specialized tools like Redactable that focus on detection and permanent removal rather than just marking text.

For those who deal with this regularly, how did you decide what was “good enough”? Was it a policy change, a tooling shift, or just better training?

Looking for software Looking for a free doodle alternative

I have used Doodle in the past to schedule meetings where I have specific time slots in mind. However, Doodle’s free version has become extremely restrictive and basically unusable. What free alternatives should I consider? I know about whenisgood/when2meet, but those are better when I don’t have specific time slots in mind, but instead for seeing how general availability overlaps.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for software Best free notetaking/recording software

I am about to go into my first year of college and have been approved for accommodations to record my classes and am wondering which software you would recommend. I would prefer it to be free or if it is paid a one time purchase vs a subscription, my classes are only ever up to about an hour and a half excluding my labs which i will probably not record and I would like to just being able to turn on the software and leave it as opposed to making multiple recordings. I would also prefer something where I can record and take notes at the same time and would potentially transcribe the recording but I do not want to use ai so that may not be possible. Please let me know what yall would recommend if naything that fits my specifications exists. Thank you!
