Incredible book.

The TV movie beginning with the bio warfare lab getting infected while Don't Fear The Reaper is playing has really stayed with me all these years later.

Edit: Typo

My 6th grade English teacher played this in class. I was 12 and still played with Power Ranger action figures

Nightmare city for a kid..... I'm wondering what the teacher s intentions were in presenting this to a bunch of 12 year olds

8

u/tyleritis 3h ago

No idea. I put my head down to not look and he took me outside of class to ask me what was wrong.

My only memory of it is of a corpse being dragged down the stairs

Holy eff. Yeah, my own twelve year olds would have reacted the same way. Actually, my older probably would have gotten up and walked out of class to sit on the bench outside the room and completely shut down in an out-of-body experience in full panic attack, for 2-3 hours. This literally happened to them once in seventh grade, when they were watching a movie about racism and how messed up skinheads are/were, and a black man who was crippled by am attack was literally describing how he was floating above the whole scene, seeing a young black man in the ground wing stomped to death, and thought, "Wow, that guy isn't going to make it. That looks painful." He was watching himself die. Our oldest literally got up with tears streaming down their face, walked into the hallway ("without getting a pass or asking to be excused!" Duh. Gee.... Do you think?) and sank onto a bench to stare silently across the hall for over an hour (through class changes, and everything).

We had a warning in their file - that all the teachers were supposed to know about - to tell us first if they were going to show something pte really upsetting to a social justice and caring-oriented empathetic pre-teen with crippling anxiety. Apparently, it never occurred to this social studies teacher that this movie and scene could be that upsetting to a child with autism and severe anxiety. WtaF? What the heck would be that upsetting then, Mr Professional? Wow. They couldn't go back to that class for days, without starting to shake.

Good one!

6

u/StellarSurveyor 3h ago

As soon as I saw this article that beginning sequence instantly popped in my head

u/HotRodHomebody 2h ago

I remember talking about that book with my friends who were also fans in our early 20s back in the 80s. We decided they could never make it into a movie because it would have to be something like six hours long. Then they made a miniseries for TV, and it was perfect! Very well cast, also.

2

u/Johnsg2g 2h ago

It was a movie, it had 4 VHS tapes!

3

u/HotRodHomebody 2h ago

I watched it on TV when it was first created. It was a huge deal, and popular! It was a miniseries, and awesome. Cool that it was also on VHS though. I'll bet you can get it on DVD nowadays.

3

u/Johnsg2g 2h ago

Cool, that’s when I first discovered it, I later read the book.

So that’s gonna need a refreshed version soon

4

u/JohnnyTreemain 4h ago

Is that the newer one or the one from the 90s?

11

u/madmorb 4h ago

The 90’s version…that piece of shit remake can stay buried.

3

u/WatchThatLastSteph 3h ago

“We are all dead, and this is Hell.”

That bit where Nadine’s in the elevator has stuck with me for awhile now.

•

u/2lost4love 19m ago

Good to know. The 1994 one is no longer streaming free. I may have to join Audible again.

u/Bionicbelly-1 3h ago

Gary Sinease cannot be outdone.

4

u/Any_Profit2862 2h ago

Gary Sinese is one of the most frightening actors I've ever watched "trying to be scary". He regularly puts me on edge when he's not playing a sociopathic serial killer! That eerie, knowing, smirky smile? Yikes.

2

u/Rabbitrockrr 2h ago

Also a fantastic bass player

3

u/magnateriat 4h ago

Yep...scared the daylights out of me, too.

3

u/Penguin_shit15 4h ago

And the crow on the fence.. CAW CAAAAW...

3

u/mspolytheist 3h ago

YES! Exactly! One of the great movie/miniseries openings of all time!

2

u/Typical_Bumblebee194 3h ago

I remember toward the end, where everything was at its most dire... "I'll die for youuuu".... The insanity of it.

2

u/dld2517 2h ago

Same here.

2

u/dqql 2h ago

i rewatched it day 1 of the covid lockdown…

2

u/Relevant_Winter_7098 2h ago

Yep. That leaves a mark for sure

2

u/Bnasty1345 1h ago

Funny I’m watching this now on prime great intro to a show

•

u/Complex_Watch1484 59m ago

What movie is this?

•

u/rfsmr 36m ago

The Stand, 1994 version, by Stephen King

•

u/Hoffafiles 37m ago

Yep, still one of my favorite openings.

•

u/InspectorCareless242 26m ago

Among The Living is a really fun song when I figured out that it was is about The Stand. “I am the walkin’ dude”
13 YO me;wonder what the fuck they’re talking about.
16 YO ME; Oh….neat.

13

u/SwiftSloth1892 5h ago

Now if you wanna be really disappointed watch the newer adaptation of the book to a TV series.

13

u/Special_Life_8261 5h ago

Don’t ever tell someone to punish themselves this way. What a piece of absolute dog 💩. The 90s version still holds up tho

•

u/Harlander77 57m ago

The 90s version still holds up tho

I mean, it's got Gary Sinise.

•

u/InspectorCareless242 32m ago

The Molly Ringwald one, right? They made another?

5

u/123-Moondance 5h ago

The movie did not do it justice either.

3

u/ZenBreaking 5h ago

I love the Book and I liked the show but they did it dirty chopping it up and time jumping to boulder.

Liked Skarsgard as flagg though.

2

u/TurtleDive1234 4h ago

Ooof. That’s the one role he didn’t do justice to.

1

u/ZenBreaking 4h ago

Really? Who would you have played the role?

•

u/_cuhree0h 1m ago

Just something I have to pretend doesn’t exist.

12

u/Typical_Bumblebee194 5h ago

Yup...scary as heck.

4

u/Bbqandjams75 5h ago

It’s a new part of it out that describes what was happening in other parts of the world while captain trips was raging

1

u/AuntySocialite 4h ago

I’ve read it, it’s really good.

5

u/Sensei19600 5h ago

Yeah, I agree that “the stand“ was one of Stephen King’s finest works. What’s ironic is that he wrote it early in his career, and later when he was being interviewed, people would come up to him and say it was the best thing he had ever written. That made him feel rather upset, because, what author wants to hear that their best work was written 25 years ago?

2

u/Chocoboperfected 3h ago

One of my favorites. I read the regular version at least 4 times and unabridged twice.

I thought it was good but the payoff not quite worth nearly 1,300 pages

•

u/ExtraCarpet2589 40m ago

I listened to the unabridged audiobook version and it was something like 45+ hours. Absolutely incredible, however this was in September of 2019. Didn’t age too well. It’s a masterpiece nonetheless.
