That’s pretty crazy. I was watching tv on November 21, 1980 while reading the book at the point when the Vegas hotel exploded. I looked up to see the MGM grand on fire on the news. That freaked me out. I was 14. And I just looked it up and the MGM grand is the hotel in that book. I just thought it was a random hotel. Talk about synchronicity.
Edit: while I was writing the above a family member had the tv show Best Medicine on and it’s the episode on the plague. The synchronicity is off the charts lol
Why on earth wouldn't you want to read a story about an extremely contagious virus being released from a government laboratory and a charismatic pseudo-fascist promising salvation while punishing those he views as disloyal?
Of course, but that doesn't change the circumstances of the last decade and how that could affect people's willingness to engage with a fictional story that has story beats that hit a little too close to home.
Again, not disagreeing. Someone in an abusive relationship might not want to read a story about an abusive relationship even if the protagonist survives.
I read the book and extended back to back in the mid 90's. There is a lot more background and story of secondary characters. My feeling was that it was good but I understood why they were cut.
Okay maybe it’s just me, I bought a copy of The Stand Uncut edition at a cheap used book store back in 2010 and I couldn’t for the life of me get through it. I get he wanted a more curated experience to give the whole story, but I feel there’s a reason some things are left on the cutting room floor.
There's a scene near the beginning where Frannie and her mom have it out over her pregnancy that was cut from the abridged version. I can't imagine leaving that scene out; it was so compelling and such a descriptive way to tell Frannie's story.
I'm trying to find a book. Apparently it's like what happens with widespread super diseases or something. They make certain college subject tracks read it. I can't remember the book title but I absolutely want to get a copy.
Really. I have the smallpox inoculation but I wonder if it would still fight it off. So many don’t have it now which is scary. Wonder if they should start it up again. Or maybe it would be different to where there is no immunity. I need to think about skmethjng different now lol
I haven’t finished the book yet but the US did make huge amounts of the vaccine after the anthrax attacks in 2001. I’m pretty sure they have a plan in place. Unfortunately inoculation doesn’t last that long, but hopefully you wouldn’t die from it!
What’s worse is that it seems there is a certain gene that they can “turn on” to disable immune response in the host, in which case vaccines won’t help.
I mean… I’m not saying I have less anxiety since moving a few days walk to Boulder but also I have less anxiety since moving a few days walk to Boulder
lol I was rereading it the first week of Covid. Had to go to work (healthcare) and showed up and a bunch of crows were just chilling in the parking lot. It was fabulous 😂
