It's anywhere from 28-40+ minutes each way. It's soul crushing. I have never had a commute be longer than 20 minutes on a bad day, and especially because I got done doing the same work for like 3 years at home, it's really irritating to have to go into a cubicle to work.
Mine is 47-1hr+ each way 5 days a week. It used to be easier to work from home once a week but then we hired our Team Leader and someone took advantage, so now we're all in the office Monday-Friday every week. Sucks, I'm thinking some other funkiness is going to put me back out on the travel nursing road again soon. I'm looking, there are contracts that look OK...
My work is a combination of people who are WFH because they got hired before/during Covid, and then newer people who aren’t being allowed WFH because they weren’t around during that time lol
Assuming you're in the US, the car culture there seems insane. I'm lucky enough to live in a part of Australia where I can cycle about 20-25 mins from home to the equivalent of downtown for work.
I've had jobs in the past where I've had to drive 30-45mins each way and it's exactly as you describe - soul crushing.
I have about a 15-20 minute commute to work, depending on traffic, which route I take, and if I want to go fast and assume there isn't a state trooper running a speed trap on the interstate. I used to live even closer and could just take my motorcycle and scoot on the small streets and be at work in six or seven minutes.
Apparently when I tell people this, it's wild. A lot of my coworkers are driving 40-60 minutes for their commute ONE WAY to get to the office.
I was in an Agri-store with my 80 year father this summer and I saw Ivermectin related products, so I told him Americans were taking that for COVID. He used to farm a little before he retired and was quite familiar with it for live stock, at first he didn't believe me but when I showed him some videos he laughed so hard he got light headed and the store owner made him sit down and brought him a glass of water. We were worried he might pass out he couldn't catch his breath laughing.
Funny thing is it sort of works, but the reason why isn’t because it does anything directly to the virus in the human body. The original study showed that ivermectin in vitro inhibited virus reproduction. No shit. The problem was that the concentration of ivermectin required to do that, was forty times the lethal human dose.
They decided, in my view intelligently and responsibly (it’s a crisis, why not try anything that’s reasonably harmless) to trial it at human tolerance levels, to see if it helped. It did help, but what the cookers miss is that it helped most in places like India, Indonesia, and African nations, where intestinal parasites are endemic.
Of course if you get rid of your parasites, you’re going to suffer less from Covid, recover faster, etc. You’ll also feel better, sleep better, run a shorter timed hundred metres, dance with more verve, be more productive at work, blah blah.
It was also effective in certain areas of the United States. We all know which areas. Those same areas that show higher percentages of alcoholism, other drug addictions, obesity, teenage pregnancy, shorter lifespans, bedsores, lower literacy, and voting Republican.
So the dumbfuck degenerate cooker Trumpletons did their experiments, noted the positive results, and came to the wrong conclusion.
A similar experiment was conducted with vaccines, and of course concluded that vaccination lowers the duration and severity of the infection (if not directly the likelihood, although having people around who carry it at lower severity for lower duration reduces infection likelihood). The cookers angrily rejected this experiment, preferring their own.
Those don’t actually apply to “white trailer trash” on a larger scale, just because they still tend to have more resources and opportunities. A general pattern for the states he’s describing is that they have a lathe underserved black population that brings all the numbers down:
Life expectancy of black vs white population has a five to ten year difference in most states
Teen birth rate is twice as high for black girls than white girls
Black adults are significantly more likely to be obese than white adults, especially black women compared to white women. It’s even more striking in kids — black kids are twice as likely to be obese as white kids
Black adults are more likely to die of overdose than white adults, though this doesn’t discriminate and indigenous Americans are actually most likely
Black Americans have a significantly lower literacy rate than white Americans, with 36% of black adults having low literacy skills, compared to only 12% of white Americans
What's wrong with voting Republican? The fact that even Massie and MTG voted with Trump 90% of the time is what's wrong. They only care about the Epstein files and wars of choice.
While those are important things, they could not care less about health care, a woman's right to autonomy, separation of church and State, due process for ALL peoples within our borders, the social safety net, environmental protections, education programs...
OMFG... LMAO! OMFG... For real? I've never come across a bigger straw man in my life! Where the fuck are you coming up with the delusion that the US is, in ANY way, threatened by an Islamist takeover and sharia law?!? Give me ONE example of said threat.
For what it's worth, I'm about as supportive of an Islamist takeover with Sharia Law as I am with a Christian takeover and Christian Law. Both can equally fuck off as far as I'm concerned. And, the fact is... a Christian takeover is an exponentially larger threat to freedom these days.
Ivermectin doesn’t do anything for COVID, but it’s a pretty common anti-parasite medication for humans. It’s just as willfully ignorant to say no human should be taking ivermectin as it is to say ivermectin cures COVID.
I know people who would go to the feed store for antibiotics because they couldn't afford a doctor visit. Instead of driving people to take medication they can easily harm themselves with, why not ensure all Americans have healthcare? We outspend every other wealthy nation on the planet on healthcare costs, but we're the only country in the top 40 without universal healthcare. Oh, and vaccinate your kids. Autism is hereditary.
I was just talking to my spouse about this. There’s a bunch of stuff that my brain covered up. I’m not sure if it qualifies as PTSD or traumatic but it’s wild how much I had already forgotten.
So many people died. Horrific and alone. Behind plastic and PPE while the Four Tops would play over grocery store speakers and we’d try to make hand signals with the cashiers because we were all learning how to mask properly. Local restaurants just trying to stay afloat with tents and string lights and limited menus.
Curbside and contactless. Cocktails to go.
Scrubbing hands after getting home and always only one of us at a time. Washing clothes constantly just because we went to Walmart. Sanitizer from breweries, toilet paper economies.
And healthcare workers just doing their best while fuck faces preached on podcasts. No noise from the street. Parades for children’s parties. My neighbors grandma couldn’t use an iPad but a nurse held one up to her bed and that’s how they said i love you and goodbye.
Makeshift morgues.
I’m not sure we learned much.
But we had dolphins in the water and some of the most beautiful shots of a smog-free cities. That was nice.
It’s not even a joke lol, when I changed recently I had to start watching literal minutes or I would get home too late. It doesn’t make sense but it does.
Most people actually do prefer to be at home and not stuck in traffic OR at work. We should be reverting to WFH where possible bc of the gasoline shortage like yesterday anyway.
What gets me about this whole exchange is that you simply stated people's work preferences and the other person said you were "coming at" them.
It's becoming more and more common for people to think that they're being argued with unless someone agrees wholeheartedly with them - and that's as scary as the abysmal literacy rates.
I've been trying to. I managed to get a WFH gig in 2021 after 20 years working in grocery stores and about a year ago they went up to 5 days a week RTO. It fucking sucks, and I just don't know if I can find something closer or what have you, because I will not start over somewhere else, I have skills and experience and I basically feel like the 27 years I have worked (since I was 15) should be worth so much more than $55k a year. I made more in 2018 and it's been stagnant to downward even since even moreso with inflation.
I know that, I had a retail grocery store job for 20 years and my last year was 2020, during the pandemic. I know people who died from the virus. So yeah I will stay my ass home if I can and not abuse workers who can't.

If it means I don't have to spend 5 hours a week in traffic, fuck yeah
