Flying into MSP and driving out but not till I get some lunch!
Heyo.
Flying into MSP tomorrow. I gotta go to a conference in La Crosse. But not until I spend some money in your beautiful city.
Anyone have any recommendations for somewhere local and awesome? Close to MSP is a bonus.
Same question but coffee recommendations.

Heavy metal / thrash shows
Any Minneapolis thrash / heavy metal shows in Minneapolis? The only thrash metal scene i know in Minnesota is the occasion old band from the 80s/90s comimg back for a reunion tour. Am I not looking jn the right place, or is the thrash/heavy metal scene dead?

these days, who does repair on hardware like laserdisc players and 90s CD changers?
Just pulled stuff out of storage and honestly it should've been expected that it's not all OK. Laserdisc player motor can't push out the tray, 6-disc cartridge changer is doing all the changing but isn't recognizing discs.
Whether it's a business or just one weird guy you know, I'm here for it. Would love to get this stuff spinning again

To-go tips?
I tip $1 on crafted drinks (coffee) and 20% on table service. But, I really don’t know what to do with tipping on:
* to-go orders,
* counter-order only (you pick up food, bus dishes, or both),
* counter-order with food brought out and bussing.
So, what are folks doing these days?

Any fellow progressives attending Sunday services around here? Looking for kindred spirits to sit with
Left-leaning Catholics looking for a pew buddy?
I'm exploring religion after working through years of religious trauma (queer, deep south). I'm not looking for opinions, please. Just looking for someone with an open-mind who wouldn't mind someone tagging along to church with you. I'd like to try the St Thomas More Catholic Community, but I am totally open! I'm in my mid-30s and queer. Again, I've worked through my own extensive religious trauma, so please try not to make this post into something it's not. :)

Dance for Toddler Boy
My almost 3 yo son just loves to dance. We want to encourage him in it especially before he starts absorbing messages about it being a girl thing. Looking for recommendations for some kind of casual classes or community events. Ideally where we could dance with him and where he’s not the only boy, or if he is the only boy, it’s at least not hitting you over the head with femininity.

Chavez’s Waymo killing cats comments
They were obviously preposterous. Even he seemed to walk them back a bit in his comments to the Star Tribune. But it does actually raise what might be a real issue: Are Waymos sometimes TOO law abiding for the general good in some circumstances?
A human might make the choice to swerve dangerously to avoid hitting the cat*. But Waymos would be programmed to follow what Minnesota law requires of drivers which under statute §169.13 “prohibits careless driving that endangers people or property.” So if you swerve to avoid hitting a cat and “endanger people or property” you are driving carelessly in a legal manner and Waymos won’t do that. But should they?
It’s essentially a moot question similar to voting fraud in that there are a minuscule number of actual “Waymo killed the cat” cases (I think I saw there have been a total of four across the various cities Waymo operates in but don’t quote me on that). But it’s an interesting philosophical question nonetheless.
*I’m aware there are some human drivers who would swerve to INTENTIONALLY HIT the cat but, what can I say? People suck.

Does anyone remember a store named Arjohn?
I picked up a couple vintage framed prints last weekend and both had a label on the back that said "Arjohn Minneapolis Hopkins Robbinsdale". I am assuming it was a frame shop or maybe a home decor shop?

Rent control helps people whose rents get limited, but it hurts everyone else. It pushes up rents, pushes down new building, and makes cities worse.

Looking for advice on a house producing unfixed cats in Minneapolis.
We have lived on this block since 2018. For at least 6 years, every 4 months or so, there has been 2-4 new teenage cats loose and in tact arriving on the block. We narrowed it down to one house that has a few mature cats that come and go freely from a side window last year. They all have similar striping and usually are black, orange, or grey with white paws. Last night, once again a 4-5 month old cat was in the community garden crying for food.
Is there anything the city can do? We don’t think they’re running a breeding mill. It seems to be a situation where they have a few in tact cats that have frequent litters and they let them roam. Eventually within a month or 2 of them showing up they end up getting hit by cars on the busy road or disappear. We think other neighbors may be trapping them and taking them to animal control.
Is this something we can report to animal control to have them step in? It’s sad because the cats are very socialized and really friendly.

Anything similar to HuHot Mongolian Grill in the area?
I randomly got a craving for it and according to Apple Maps, the nearest is in Rochester. Are there any similar style restaurants in the area?

Master swim
Hey! I really wanna get better at swimming for endurance. I can freestyle for 200 meters but I feel like my strokes need a lot of improvement. Does anyone have a team recommendation? Or can share what their experience is like? Thanks!!
