Fan Contribution An In-Depth Guide for Getting into Kara no Kyoukai

Post image

The following is an in-depth guide that I've made for getting into Kara no Kyoukai. It will explain everything you should know going into the story, as well as provide the recommended viewing orders for the light novel and its movie adaptations.

It's originally a light novel told in non-linear order (meaning it's not told in chronological order).

When getting into Kara no Kyoukai, you have two options.

You can either start by reading the light novel (which is what's recommended), or start by watching the movie adaptations (which isn't recommended).

It isn't recommended for you to start out with the movies because Kara no Kyoukai’s story is fragmented, which doesn’t translate well to movie format. In addition to that, some events and character personalities were altered or not clearly portrayed in order to cut down each chapter’s runtime to fit the movies’ length. Internal dialogue and scenes necessary for understanding the story were also cut out, leaving many viewers confused about what’s going on.

Not to mention the 6th movie is practically fan fiction, so it’s recommended not to watch it, which results in you missing out on an entire story chapter if you start out with the anime (especially if you decide to go anime-only).

However, the movies are highly praised for a good reason, as they perfectly adapt the story’s atmosphere, while delivering high-quality storytelling and animation within a limited runtime. But in terms of actual story accuracy to the light novel, they fall short, which is why reading the light novel first is the recommended option.

There’s also a manga adaptation, which is extremely faithful to the light novel and would be recommended if it wasn't for two big issues.

The first is that it's incomplete, currently somewhere around 75-85% through chapter 6, "Oblivion Recording".

The second is that it hasn't received a proper English translation. The current translation is riddled with grammatical errors, and a majority of chapter 5, "Paradox Spiral", hasn't been translated at all (chapters 38-56). Also, the chapters after 72 haven't been translated yet.

That said, both the manga and the movies add scenes that clarify things left unclear in the light novel. Because of this, it’s recommended to watch the movies after reading the light novel, then check out the manga afterward if you have the time.

Now, for the actual orders.

Light Novel

  1. Volume 1
  2. Volume 2
  3. Volume 3 (Only in the Kodansha Bunko release. The original release has just two volumes)
  4. Future Gospel
  5. Future Gospel: Extra Chorus (either read the manga or watch the OVA)
  6. Final Record

Movies

Narrative/Release Order (recommended for first-time viewers, as it follows the author’s intended presentation and the novel’s chapter sequence):

  1. Movie 1: Overlooking View
  2. Movie 2: A Study in Murder – Part 1
  3. Movie 3: Remaining Sense of Pain
  4. Movie 4: The Hollow Shrine
  5. Movie 5: Paradox Spiral
  6. Movie 6: Oblivion Recording
  7. Movie 7: A Study in Murder – Part 2
  8. OVA 1: Epilogue
  9. Movie 8: Future Gospel
  10. OVA 2: Future Gospel: Extra Chorus

Chronological Order (not recommended, as it goes against the intended narrative structure of the story):

  1. Movie 2: A Study in Murder – Part 1
  2. Movie 4: The Hollow Shrine
  3. Movie 3: Remaining Sense of Pain
  4. Movie 1: Overlooking View
  5. Movie 5: Paradox Spiral
  6. Movie 6: Oblivion Recording
  7. Movie 7: A Study in Murder – Part 2
  8. OVA 1: Epilogue
  9. OVA 2: Future Gospel: Extra Chorus
  10. Movie 8: Future Gospel

Now, for the FAQ

Q1. Where can I find/read the light novel?

A. It’s encouraged to buy the official release in order to support the industry. If you don’t want to buy it, you can look for it online on your own.

Q2. Is the light novel available in English physically or only digitally?

A. The light novel hasn’t received an official English translation, so the only English translations available are fan-made and can be found online if you search for them. It has, however, been officially translated into Polish, Korean, and Chinese.

Q3. What is the name of the story? Kara no Kyoukai, or Garden of Sinners?

A. Its name is Kara no Kyoukai, which translates to "Boundary of Emptiness". Garden of Sinners is the English tagline for Kara no Kyoukai.

Q4. Where can I legally watch the KnK movies?

A. They're available on Crunchyroll and Amazon Prime Video. Availability may vary by country.

Q5. Is the "Remix" movie (Gate of Seventh Heaven) worth watching? What does it do, exactly?

A. It recaps the plot of the first six movies in chronological order. It doesn’t really add anything to the story besides some extra context behind the motivation of chapter 6’s main antagonist and a few new visuals.

Q6. What is the epilogue?

A. It's a short, half hour OVA epilogue to chapter 7, "A Study in Murder – Part 2".

Q7. Is there any sexual content I should know about?

A. Yes. The story includes sexual content that depicts assault, specifically in the third and seventh movies. Viewer discretion is advised.

Q8. Is Kara no Kyoukai related to the Fate series?

A. Yes, as it is a part of its overarching multiverse (The Nasuverse).

Q9. Do I need to watch any works of the Fate series to understand KnK? Are there cameo characters or references I’ll miss if I haven’t seen other Nasuverse works?

A. No, you do not have to read or watch anything else from the Nasuverse (like Fate and Tsukihime content) just to see Kara no Kyoukai. In fact, it’s the very first major work that Nasu published, so if anything, it should be experienced before other Nasuverse works in order to understand any references in them.

Q10. What if I don't want to read the light novel?

A. Then just watch the movies. I’m not forcing you to read the light novel. I’m just telling you that going anime-only for KnK or starting with the movies isn’t the best option. But if you don't want to read it, that's fine. Don't force yourself to.

And that's it! Hope it helps!

Type-Moon's greatest fake: an Enjou Tomoe appreciation post

Hello, back with one of these needlessly long analyses where I talk about ™ characters nobody else talks about. Kurogiri might be the one nobody knows, but he takes a little more to deconstruct.

Anyhow, this is about my favorite ™ character, so let’s start. No glaze, of course!

"FUCKIN ENJOU" - My friend, calling Shirou "Enjou" during DEEN Stay Night after reading KnK

Just to put it out there, I genuinely think Enjou is a more impactful character than Shirou, but he explores the ideal of a fake very differently. From the start, Enjou is not on the extreme spectrum of “0”, as in, he has things to call his own: his pride. But he lives a very dispirited and hollow life, eventually. If Type-Moon MCs are typically riddled with a moral self-responsibility, Enjou is riddled with an obligation to depreciate his own worth after losing what he once had.

> ... Until I had entered high school, Enjou Tomoe had been a well-known name in the track and field world. Hating to lose, I didn’t once see the backs of other athletes during junior high. I was confident of shortening my record further still, and there was no reason to suspect my intelligence either.

> Besides, I liked to run more than anything else. In that, I at least was genuine. I even had a conviction that I wouldn’t let any obstacle get in my way.

> But I stopped running.

Enjou's glory was short-lived. He gave up his convictions to external circumstances, was essentially shunned out of his meaning in life, and forced himself to live as a shell because he blamed his family for his bad chain of situations. Enjou has every right to lash out at the world, but he doesn't. He lashes out at himself instead.

> I continued on like this, and I woke up one day to find that I had clean forgotten about the running I had liked so much.

> It was something that I had enjoyed so much, something that had been such a source of relief. It became something I gave up because a small misfortune occurred, that realization shocked even me.

> The people who had praised me disappeared, and I didn’t have time to run anymore. How could such excuse-like things break me of my enjoyment?

These few lines are my favorite of all of KnK. It lays out a true “fake”, one who doesn't believe in their own talents or effort, delegating their life to living through the motions, lamenting what once was, but never what could've been. It is a true loser, through and through, who never thinks to wish for amendment. For Enjou, there is no future. There is no ideal, dream, or Hero of Justice he can strive to be. Because from the very start, he knew he was never meant to be anything, let alone what he wanted to be.

> ... When I was young, I followed my parents to a ranch and saw a horse. Seeing that horse that I didn’t even know the name of, I broke down and cried. Seeing that being whose only act in life was to run, I couldn’t stop my tears from pouring out. If there were such things as past lives, I would have been one of them. That was how strong my belief was, that was how much I admired the very act of running itself.

> But I was a fake.

Enjou's pessimism stays constant throughout Paradox Spiral. This is a quality of absoluteness to his character; a rigidity that he outright states is related to his Origin. He does not doubt that he can’t commit to living a truthful life anyone can be proud of. At this point in the story, Enjou’s Origin is explicitly NOT what he wants it to be. Laying aside why he knows what the idea of an Origin is, it seems more than anything that Enjou has let the directive take over him. He reaches for his flaws instead of his past virtues, and lets it seep in and steer the fate of his family and himself.

But all this changes when he meets a certain kimono-strapped beauty… Well, she’s not always the best influence on him. The passage above is from after he meets Shiki.

Heard of boy meets girl? Well, now you have boy meets doom.

Shiki Ryougi has friends. Why don't you?

Now, Enjou and Shiki's dynamic is hilariously one-sided.

> Yeah, no matter what I did.

> That friend’s role will never come around to me.

It is a dynamic based on Enjou's yearning. Shiki is a new ideal in his life. He falls in love with her carelessness, her strength, and the lack of hesitation in her actions to kill. All values that Shiki would rather someone not display obsession for. She would learn to know this feeling deeply two chapters later. But Enjou indeed opens up a more casual part of Shiki.

“... Well, it’s not something for me to say, but if you speak out loud about an uneasiness that
‘cannot be seen’ it becomes a lie. I can’t know myself, but love is believing in something. The
blindness of love, isn’t that its meaning?”

This just describes how Shiki thinks of Mikiya’s faith in her, haw haw. All this to say, Enjou is a more positive influence on Shiki than the opposite. However, as we all know, Shiki hates a fake (killer), and that’s what Enjou’s middle name is. Even worse, Enjou would much rather die by Shiki's hand than live out the rest of his life. To die or to live as a murderer condemned to his sin, it's all the same to him after the incident at the Ogawa Mansion.

Speaking of that, Enjou doesn’t regret murdering his parents, but this was his mistake. Shiki says it herself.

> “A drastic error. Enduring was your forte, but in the end, you chose the painful path. When we first met, you weren’t you. Having lost your future, did the empty you want to die like just before?”

Quite the opposite of Mikiya. Enjou cannot bear someone else's sin, since he is too weak to even bear his own. In contrast to Mikiya, who would sacrifice himself if it meant eliminating a retrovirus to save others. Enjou, in a similar position, would let a wild Shiki free to taste her murderous desires. A self-proclaimed weakness and a self-conscious weakness. Of the “normal” people in Shiki’s life, Enjou has a lot to learn from her instead.

From here you can also see how much of a silver lining it was in Araya's plan that Enjou was chosen as his pawn. Enjou, who even fakes his emptiness, would of course be attracted to Shiki, a true hollow shrine, and practically worship her without trying to understand her feelings. Yet Shiki's dialogue with him to clear his frenzy is something you'd expect of Mikiya: Shiki tells Enjou to return to his real home. To find his heart. It’s truly something you’d never hear Shiki speak of in the previous parts.

Enjou and Shiki's relationship is important because it highlights how both have come so far from their initial bouts of emptiness. Shiki can understand exactly why Enjou can't be a real killer, because at this point he lacks the drive or responsibility to take his life into his own hands. On the other hand, Enjou's whole relationship with her is based on the biggest error of his life, but he wasn't wrong to want to help and protect her, even if he didn't have the capability to.

With Shiki's advice, Enjou gains a spark of reality. She is his starting pistol, but this Sprinter's still needs a short burst to even get close to the finish line.

Sprinter X Cheerleader

Now you know what's a real treat? Enjou and Mikiya's chemistry, for the short few scenes they have together. I've always thought they had an amazing dynamic because of what they each represent. Enjou can't stand his own mundaneness. He refuses to see it as a virtue, and instead sees the potential for kindness in his past as dead weight and time better spent barreling into a worthless death for someone else’s sake in the long run. That is to say, Enjou is a terrible and meandering person, practically dead weight to others.

Which means he's the perfect person for Mikiya to lend a hand to. Mikiya's forte is guidance: to show others the way, let them carve their own paths to the truth of their characters. What they decide to do depends on them. For all he says when he regrets ignoring his parents’ blight, Enjou could never have made that decision without Mikiya and Shiki pointing out that caring for himself was the way he wanted to live.

> More than anything else, the most important thing was oneself.

> The thing worth protecting, even if it meant deceiving others, was the life of Enjou Tomoe.

> Yeah, perhaps that was the purest truth; not a fake, not an embellishment, but the raw, true nature.

Enjou has ultimately failed in his life. There is nothing he can do to make up for what's lost, but atonement is never out of reach; even atonement that can only calm his own heart. This is the last time Enjou can run again. He's held onto his family's key and taken it for granted, and now it's time to pass on the baton, for someone else to protect what's dear to his heart.

Well, without that person's consent. Enjou is headstrong, above all. What Type-Moon redhead isn't?

> “See ya! I’ll start over again after this. I love Ryougi, but she doesn’t need me. You don’t really match with Ryougi, but that’s exactly why it works... For me, I just felt reassured seeing the same thing in Ryougi that I saw in myself. A person like you suits people like me and her, someone so harmless it’s almost ridiculous–”

> And so I ran.

> I never looked back, not even once.

Enjou is now full of hope. Full of will to live. Full of heart to fight. He was not wrong to love Shiki, and not wrong to devote his life to trying to be a tad bit less useless. Mikiya’s advice rebirths him into the final stage of the sprint.

Yet, he still needs to confront his fakeness. He can do that back home, though.

INTERLUDE: Sprinter X Cheerleader is heartwarming?!

> The man offered me his hand to pull me up.

> “If you can’t stand on your own, I’ll lend you a hand.”

> ... I squinted at it as though it were dazzling, then slowly brushed it aside.

> The joints in my body screamed out in protest, but this was a pride I had to uphold until the day I died.

> Enjou Tomoe stood up.

> “Mind your own business. I’ve always done everything by myself.”

> Though, in the end, that was just my own self-centered delusion.

> The man gave a brief, indifferent laugh.

> “Yeah, I thought you’d say that.”

> Strangely enough, his smile made me want to smile back.

Home is where you fake it

Origins in KnK are extensively used to highlight Nature vs. Nurture. For those who explicitly have their Origins stated, they can either succumb to their original nature or fight to be paradoxical. To strive for more in their existence. Some boundaries are more empty than others, but fillable and mendable. Some others are a pit of doom from the start. Some existences are a spiral, never to be a paradox.

Case in point: Araya's whole building experiment. Often you may wonder how he planned to reach the Root by endless killing, but it's simple division and probability.

> ... He should have thought about it more. The people who repeated the same lives every day weren’t actually living the same today as yesterday. If they were, their abnormality would have been exposed to the outside world. After all, they were living humans who experienced slight, insignificant changes, but nothing major, in the spiraling repetition of their daily lives.

Perhaps with enough time and upping the scale, Araya could've actually opened a gate to the root, successfully deviating from a predetermined destiny… but that'd be an experiment which needed ones to divide into infinitesimals. A long, long time for anything to happen. Very magus-like for Araya.

So anyone with some sharp mystic eyes could point out the oddness of how Enjou “broke” out of his spiral. He was an unprecedented variable, but completely controllable. The spiral was broken but not the paradox, and Enjou seeing his brain heeds nothing but reinforcing the fact that he was a true fake. Even faker than the real Enjou. That is the nature of the Ogawa Mansion. Telling you what you already know, in a slightly different way, until it's something you don't know. Which is impossible. Theoretically.

> “... I’m the same. I wanted someone to save me. I always wanted someone to save me. But I never knew what I wanted to be saved from... But now I see. I wasn’t supposed to know. Because there’s no way to be saved. No matter how much you try to reinterpret the meaning, you can’t erase the very first phenomenon that caused everything.”

So the only way to truly break out of the spiral is to change your existence and your inevitable death. What Araya was aiming for. If Enjou tried a little harder to care about his family, he would've never been killed inside the mansion, or killed inside the mansion. Yet that possibility never came to him. Origins dictate an inclination, not too different from an undeterrable dream that someone holds in their deep subconscious.

Enjou couldn't have saved his family. That's his paradox. He had been so selfishly idealizing his plight as inevitable; his path drifted away from figuring out the underlying cause behind his downfall. Before he could save his family, he had to save himself. In that state he was before the Ogawa Mansion, it wasn't in the cards for Enjou.

> But even that was an impossible thought. A misaligned cycle could never revolve in the same way again. This daily existence could only continue by presupposing that the dead remain dead.

> Even so, Tomoe thought.

> –Yeah. I wish this spiral was a paradox.

The egregious namedrop makes a lot more sense now, doesn’t it?

Now, the novels add detail to Enjou's doll body, but the implications are a lot worse, as the Enjou we know might as well be a poor projection of the real one.

> Tomoe rapidly remembered. Because he was manufactured he only had the memories of one day that could have happened in this apartment complex, and he was relying on those memories to create illusions of the past and future.

> His feelings for Ryougi Shiki, his feelings for his dead parents; everything was just a forgery from what he was now. They were not the feelings of the person who had had been born as Enjou Tomoe.

Insanely messed up. Not even doll Tomoe gets the right to have real, verifiable memories. Could his whole flashback when Mikiya helped him be just a convenient fantasy to allow him to live on, just a little longer?

> ““... In front of someone like you, I finally understand. I have been wrong all along, like you, I couldn’t admit my weakness. But, there’s no such thing as fake. Real and fake are just things that are eventually decided later, aren’t they? You say it’s just for a day – since this body is Enjou Tomoe, I’m connected to Enjou Tomoe’s real past. I have no past, but I have the same strong feelings Tomoe does. So it’s alright.”

Even so, he's able to dunk on Araya's 200+ year ambitions. It was Enjou's deluge of emotions that gave him a visage of freedom, that gave him a purpose that Araya could not find even after his long years of searching. A minor enlightenment for sure, but Araya’s a fuckin’ Buddhist larper. Enjou’s got him beat.

Araya's hubris / All magi are fools

Now, the major antagonist of Paradox Spiral is Souren Araya, but he is not majorly Shiki's antagonist. He is Shiki's obstacle, but a far better foil to Enjou and Touko (I would love to do a Touko analysis but I would just start foaming at my four holes at the thought of her).

The Ogawa Mansion at first screams “inhumane”. It perpetuates a cruel last day for all of its residents, but since it is a predetermined last day, albeit heavily accelerated. The real point of the experiment is not cruelty, but rather a disbelief in humanity.

> “Even if that were true. What backed him was the scum, the rabble striving to maintain the age of humanity. It would have been impossible for the original Enjou Tomoe to act as he did. What moved him was not a heart that cared for his family. Such a thing doesn’t exist in humans. All they have is their desire to survive. He only wore the ornament of something like familial love to conceal his hideous true feelings. Because he wanted to live, he pretended to protect others.”

Araya, much like Enjou, refused to believe that mundane everyday life could serve anything to anyone. In fact, he believed human suffering held no significance until humanity could be viewed at the end of their existence. That they would suffer, then die repeatedly. So if this natural phenomenon were to be exploited to humanity's destruction, wouldn't that bring some solace to Araya?

He kept that train of thought even in his defeat. The refusal of his paradox, his goal to topple all of humanity's will, was thwarted by the miserable life of a boy who couldn't succeed anywhere in life. One, in any life, who couldn't succeed because of a pitiful Origin.

The reason Araya lost was that he let his Origin, his direction, completely take over him. Becoming suspended as an inhuman within a world full of humans, it's no wonder he couldn't comprehend what Enjou's experiences were, emotions that are far too prevalent in all of humanity. Enjou's end and his impact on the world are the direct antithesis of what Araya refused to, and never will, acknowledge: the virtues of humanity. The short meaning that those miserable, suffering lives give to the world. For Araya, he will transcend life and death just to deny humanity, to find his Paradox Spiral of pure human ugliness.

Araya truly is the most stubborn mage, the most mage-like mage. After all, he suspended himself to stay in one place, never to run again. As the seasons change, so does Enjou, but not Araya. Never Araya.

He was here.

Enjou Tomoe is THE reason I got so involved into loving KnK, and in turn, the rest of Type-Moon. He hits so extremely close to home, and is in essence, a character that inspires hopelessness. Something quite different from what a lot of Nasu writes, but it's only a matter of scale.

Beyond the grandiose beauty of humanity, there are its utter flaws. A momentum that heads both ways. Of a momentary dazzle and all the world’s evil. Of bitter cynicism and reassured determination.

Enjou’s story is a less vague, clearer reality that's a fair bit more grounded than, say, the persistent yet unyielding idealism of Emiya Shirou, the carpe diem of Tohno Shiki, and the sheer apathetic laziness of Ishizue Arika. It invokes a lot of specific feelings of helplessness, and in my eyes, those feelings are more effective because it strikes at a more tangible level of humanity. See Kirisu and Sinker’s story in DDD. It has the same flavor of race as Enjou’s run.

Alas, Enjou can tell us a lot of things that are easy to let slip through your hands.

The inability to reciprocate your family's love. The resignation to simply survive in isolation without ever seeking reform. All the more, running after something you don't know if you'll ever want again. This is the momentum towards the flaw. The low point of our lives. Enjou had, for almost all of his life, kept sprinting in the opposite direction of his happiness.

In the novel, Enjou's last line in the movie comes before all his laments about his life.

> It couldn’t end like this. I was not worthless.

> “Because I was here.”

Araya then breaks it to Enjou: His Origin works against him. His Origin is worse than insignificance and only exists to make him suffer significantly. Enjou’s Origin, in any life, couldn’t be “Running”. From start to end, Enjou was the epitome of worthlessness. Yet he set Shiki free, defeated Araya, and died at the peak of his humanity.

His insignificance is a little alleviated when Shiki realizes she wants a companion that's far more different and more intimate than what Enjou was to her to fill the void in her, but even then he's just a mild afterthought. A small lament of losing a friend.

So let's generalize a bit. Bring Enjou's purpose to light a little.

I like to think that it's unavoidable that we can't clearly see what direction we want to run towards. But there's a finish line that can guide us, if not a little weighty. It's death. It spurs us to sprint faster towards an arbitrary goal because we no longer have an excuse to put things off. Of course, most people who read KnK aren't going to have the weight of death hanging over them, but Enjou pushes a thoughtful mindset to the forefront.

Yes, he acts extremely rashly after no longer fearing death, but he grows significantly as a doll person to be able to lead a more truthful, if not brief, life. In that brevity is a short window of uninterrupted motion, the one and only testament of speed.

In the last moments of the doll's life, everything comes gushing out. That doll's last moments of failure are one of Nasu's best. There isn't anything to root for and cheer for. You are watching a fake die without a trace left behind. The only comfort is that it saw itself as real, that its sorrows were real, that its regret was real, that its life was barely worth living.

It's a simple reminder. You can make your suffering mean something. It may be too late for reparations, but never too late to try and chase after the person you once wanted to be in your dreams. Especially if it's no longer possible.

Who else would you be sprinting for?

Because no one has ever published an official English translation of KnK, I took the current English fan translation and had my own book printed for Volume 1 (parts 1-3; 163 pages).

I used some fantastic fan art for the design of the front and back sleeves, and then made a simple volume 1 spine design.

It came out way better than I expected. Each volume will only be about 15$, so I’m definitely planning to get the entire series printed.

Hopefully Kara No Kyoukai will eventually get an official English physical LN in the future, but for now this is the best I could do!

Create a variety of highly customizable companions, taking one to be a permanent fixture in your quest for utmost perfection and even making others to act as stewards and servants - completely life-like in demeanor and appearance!

This customization also extends to you, allowing you to draw from the various Puppet Parts to slot into your own body and even at higher levels creating your own perfected workshop so that you can create as many back-up copies of your own body as you want!

This subclass is very much Artificer in its Quintessential form, extremely customizable with 32 options for your puppets and a myriad ways you may take it! It is one of our largest ones for a good reason, and we do believe we managed to capture the spark that Artificer is meant to have!

I posted an a cappella version on YT since the instrumental is HEAVILY copyrighted for this, so if you could check that out and leave a like and comment that would help a ton. Just search "Moyase Utaite garden of sinners" and it should pop up. Lemme know if you like it <3

Welcome to the garden of sinners! This Roguish archetype will grant you the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception and other abilities belonging to the Ryougi Shiki. Despite its empty origins, it's a perfect kit to prune your enemies' life.

To be honest, it was difficult to create something that maintained the character's fantasy while also not being extremely broken at the same time, so I hope you enjoyed it!
