I think I am the “bad ALT”

Putting this on a throwaway because I’m shy.

Whenever I talk to other ALTs I feel like they’re all doing way more work than I am. When I first moved here I’d always ask teachers if they want me to prepare something or we would lesson plan with teachers at elementary schools too. Now they don’t ever ask me to do anything and I gave up asking because the answer was always no, and my elementary school hired another JTE to do all the teaching and she never consults me for ideas or plans. So I’m literally just existing for the sake of being a required foreigner in the class.
They don’t even ask me to check tests anymore, or check students work, and students never ask me for help either anymore because they just use ai for everything. My schools English levels have PLUMMETED, and nobody likes English anymore. I don’t enjoy the job at all because of this and I blame myself because I feel like maybe I’m at fault. But I don’t know what else I can do when I don’t go to the schools all that often and the JTEs pretend I don’t exist. I love living in Japan, I have a really strong network outside of work which is the main reason I haven’t completely gone insane. But at work I feel at a dead end.
Then when I hear about other peoples “bad alts” who do nothing and don’t add anything of value, I wonder if that’s me too? Because I don’t do anything I guess. I do speaking tests when asked, English boards every month, help students in class when I can etc etc. but these all feel passive givens in my opinion. So when I’m at work I try to study Japanese but I feel like I’ve lost my passion there too, I can’t study for hours and hours everyday. Going to work feels like purgatory and I know some people will say “leave Japan then, open a space for someone who really WANTS to be there”. But it’s not that I don’t want to be here, I just feel like maybe I’m stuck now in a cycle of bad habits (probably of my own making) and now I don’t know how to get out of it.
I’m not even sure why I made this post I just wanted to vent and maybe see if I’m not the only one stuck in this endless loop.

<Audio segments> ・Audio Segment 1 :Motivation for applying to the JET Programme (approx.15 seconds)

As the title says, can anyone help me out regarding this audio segement. I'm a bit confused like do we have to record a 15 seconds audio, speaking about our motivation? But for 15 seconds only, what can we possibly say in that short time frame?

Future Plans with JET

So I graduated in May 2025 with a double major in English (Creative Writing concentration) and Asian Studies (Japanese concentration) and since then I've just kind of... I dunno, been bumming around, I guess.

I didn't do very many extracurriculars or internships in college (undergrad). I fell into that awful, awful trap of extreme introversion, and also the assumption that things after graduation would just kind of "work out" (I went to a t20 college, but I guess a bachelor's alone doesn't mean much in this brutal job market). I did, though, manage to cultivate what was a superficial interest in Japanese borne from pop culture into what I'd like to think of as a genuine passion for the history and the culture— shout-out to my awesome professors— enough-so that I upgraded my original intention of a Japanese minor into a double-major and chose to study-abroad in Kyoto in the spring of 2024. It was pretty awesome. I know that a study-abroad experience is very different from a career experience, but I did decide back then that one of my long-term goals would be to acquire permanent residency. I've been back a few times since then— I have a friend who lives in Tokyo and he only charges me for leaving the heater on all day (oops)— so I at least have a little idea of what it's like to live in Japan as a not-student. But again, I recognize that that's still tourist-adjacent compared to actually working.

The part of my application I'm stumbling over is how JET will help me with my career plans... thanks to the unintentional sabotage inflicted upon me by my past self, I'm not really sure what I want the shape of my future to look like beyond "I wanna live in Japan!" I've been doing tutoring part-time since spring, so I know I like teaching, but I don't think I'd very much enjoy being a full-time teacher. Does that make sense? It's like how some people would rather be a secretary than a CEO.

Anyways, circling back to the main point of the post, I'm not sure how to respond to that section or what they're really looking for. Does "I'm a young adult hoping for SOME kind of direction in my life and I think the soft skills from being an ALT are easily transferable to any future steps I might take" work? Is coming off like one of those weirdo Americans trying to "find themselves" in a foreign country a total red flag?? And really... how are you supposed to "find yourself" anyways?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Breaking JET contract early! Advice appreciated~

Hello,

Well my plan was to do JET for one year then return to America to pursue my master degree. But in my city we had to sign the contract for the following year on October... At the time (last year) I had only been in Japan working as an ALT for three months, and it felt like all the moving and money spent on my apartment was just a waste if I left after one year. So I decided to sign it and stay for more time.

A while ago, I asked my contracting City Hall if it was possible to leave Japan earlier because I needed time to change US states, move to a new place, prepare for grad school, and find employment to fund my studies (hopefully get a GTA which includes a mandatory training before the semester starts).

But they told me, "Could you let the people at the university know that you will be there late?"

I explained that graduate programs are strict and mandatory training and orientation are "mandatory", but they continued to say, "your contract ends at the end of July"...

At the time, I was really stressed because I do not want to be rushed into the next step of my life. So, during the summer I decided to break contract in March (finish the school year with my kids and help with the graduations), then enjoy one or two months cleaning up my apartment, fixing all the documents needed before my departure, travel a little, and leave to the US on May.

Does anyone know if ALTs are allowed to say two months after ending the contract? Especially if we break it?

I wanted some advice on how to deal with City Hall. I enjoy the ALT work, but its time for me to continue my studies and get closer to my goal. But I do not know how things work after ending the contract. My plan was to tell city hall about ending my contract on December or January, so they have time to find a replace.

Or when would it be a good time to let them know? I am scared they will treat me different because they would know I will leave.

I would really appreciate any advice!!! Please <3

Looking to connect with fellow Indian JET applicants 🇮🇳🇯🇵

Hi everyone! I’m an Indian applicant currently applying for the JET Programme as an ALT, and I was wondering if there are any other Indian applicants applying this year who would like to connect.
It would be great to have a small group where we can share our experiences, discuss the application process, SOPs, interviews, timelines, and generally support each other throughout the process.
If you’re an Indian applicant currently applying for JET, feel free to comment here or DM me! 😊

Low CGPA (5-6), career gap, recommendation letter issue - can I still get into JET as an ALT?

Hi everyone,

I am planning to apply for JET as an ALT and I need some honest advice.

About me:

- Graduation CGPA is 5-6, PUC was 82 percent

- I have some work experience but currently I am unemployed and doing a side gig

- The person I work with for my side gig does not have an official company email id and to buy one will cost him. We started recently so I cannot force him

- I have a career gap right now

I am really anxious about two things:

  1. Health check - Will it disqualify me? How strict is the medical form?

  2. Recommendation letters - Does it have to be a company email? Will a personal Gmail be rejected? Is career gap going to be a massive obstacle?

My dream is to leave from here and stay in Japan as an ALT. I want this badly.

If anyone with a similar background got into JET, please share what worked for you. Any tips on who to ask for recommendation letters if you are not currently employed?

Thanks so much for reading. And I've been laid off multiple times , if u r curious as to why I'm unemployed. And I've been trying ever since.

Applying for JET in my 30s

Hi all.

As the title says, im applying this year for the Jet program. I'm 33 years old based in Ireland and have been wanting to experience Japanese culture for nearly 10 years. its only now i'm finally getting around to applying again after I failed the first time, back in 2019.

There's two things that have me worrying, one is my age, feel like I'm my age would hinder my application process, as the Jet program seems to be more aimed at college students. Anyone apply in their 30s and get successful?

The 2nd thing I've been struggling with is the statement of purpose. I never knew exactly what I wanted to say, meaning I could give the most obvious answers, the culture, car culture, food etc but I found these to be the most given example in a sop.

I have a massive interest in Japanese literature, specially around the nuance of japanese emotion through literature, specifically the emotional weight of unspoken words. However, what catches me out on this, is my Japanese isnt what it use to be, so by me writing that in my SOP, I'm somewhat worried, they'll ask me about my Japanese level(which is not what it use to be) and will i be able to translate when over there, if I want to learn more of literature.

Sorry about the length of that.

Any opinion would be highly welcomed.

Oops…

I submitted my application with a typo! I wrote TELF instead of TEFL in one description. Needless to say I’m mortified and frustrated, but I’m very proud of the rest of my application package so hopefully I’m not dropped from consideration due to that oversight. It’s a mistake I make all the time when typing.

So PSA to others, double check! And let me know if you’ve got any words of encouragement, has anyone else found a typo after submission? Did it end up okay in the end?

Help with Recommendation Letters

Hello everyone, I decided I’m going to go ahead and apply. Thank you for all your advice, suggestions, etc it’s been very helpful.

I’m most worried about my recommendations so far. I have studied abroad in Japan at a language school and I also used to teach children in the past although I have no certification for it. I do not have contact with anyone from those programs I’ve been part of to request letters of recommendation for. Will this be a huge problem for me? Or can I just make the requests from my current unrelated colleagues? Or should I just reach out to my old teachers and colleagues anyway?

Top 3: Cities or Prefectures?

I'm applying for 2027, and am struggling with how I should select my top 3 placement locations. I know I'm unlikely to get them and have accepted that, so I am hoping to at least not chase away any possible acceptance with my answers. Is it safer to list my top 3 as general prefectures, or as cities? Will cities show that I've put a lot of thought into where I wanna be, or bite me in the butt because its too specific?

I and my husband will be going (he's not an applicant, just a dependent), if accepted, so we're hesitantly hoping for places with some international schools for his work (Hokkaido, or Sendai maybe), low cost of living, and access to public transpo.

Any Boston, MA JETs looking to network?

Hi everyone! I’m a Boston-area JET who recently returned to Massachusetts, and I’m currently looking for my next full-time opportunity.

My background is primarily in government, public affairs, international relations, and youth development. I’ve previously worked in the White House, Massachusetts State House, and youth development/nonprofit spaces, in addition to my time on JET in Japan.

I’m particularly interested in roles involving:
Government / public sector
Public affairs or government relations
International affairs / U.S.-Japan relations
Communications
Nonprofit or program management
Business/public-sector roles where I can build more private-sector experience.

I’ve scoured Indeed, Handshake, and LinkedIn and am honestly hitting a bit of a dead end, so I figured I’d ask here. If you know of organizations hiring in the Boston area, have a lead on a position, or even know someone I should reach out to, I’d really appreciate it.

I’m open to different types of roles and am mainly looking for a chance to get my foot in the door and build from there.

If you have any leads, organizations I should be watching, or people you think I should connect with, please feel free to comment or DM me. Thanks!

I recently started a job at UPS. Was really thinking about doing JET before but now I am not so sure since the current job+benefits are actually pretty decent.

I think trying out the jet program would be really cool but I recently started a job at UPS that for the most part I like. The pay is decent and I am not going to go into huge detail but there is going to be a new union contract in 2028 which usually means another pay bump. I know if I did jet now I would obviously have to leave UPS but at the same time with UPS if I wanted to next summer I could go on a vacation to Japan for like 2 or 3 weeks by myself or with a friend or family member. I am still interested in doing JET but at the same time don't want to leave ups. My big worry is that if I end up quitting ups for jet if I don't like jet i will realize I have basically screwed myself.

I'm hesitant about being an ALT. Are my reservations justified?

Edit to add context: 34M single, introverted. Lost in life and hoping JET might shake things up for me. Got offered a place last year, upgraded from Alternate, but rejected it for the same two reasons explained here. (before placement was allocated, so I hope I'm right in thinking I'm still eligible this year.)

I feel highly seduced by the idea of living in Japan, learning a new culture and language, soaking up the environment and hopefully gain some character-building experiences.

But I have two reservtions about the role:

  1. I don't feel I'm a natural teacher of English to classes of 30 pupils. But I could perhaps learn to do it and enjoy the performance somewhat. But needing to plan a lesson off a blank sheet seems pretty nightmare-ish to me right now. I sense I'm more of an English teacher to small groups or one to one tutor. So had I better ditch the JET idea and do CELTA or similar? (Any suggestions for that kind of pathway?)
  2. Making meaningful connections and relationships. I have zero Japanese skills right now. I am pretty introverted. Am I right to fear that I wouldn't make a single meaningful friend or find a relationship on a JET year?

Or am I simply overthinking it and should I just give it a shot?

Panicking about Statement of Purpose getting AI flagged

I applied for JET last year, got an interview, was offered an Alternate position, and wasn't able to accept an upgrade due to some family issues, so I'm applying again for 2027 and hoping desperately to make shortlist this time. I've been re-writing my old essay, since it's probably bad form to just re-submit the same statement of purpose. I thought I was done, but then it occurred to me to double check that my essay doesn't get flagged as AI slop, since I'm sure that's a big problem for these programs. I've never touched AI in my damn life, and am trying to keep it that way for as long as possible, so I just about threw up when an AI checker flagged my freshly written essay as AI. I don't know what to do. I hate this hell timeline we live in. I feel physically sick.

Is a direct supervisor reference mandatory, or can it be a colleague? (PH Applicant)

Hi! I’m preparing my application for the JET Programme (Philippines applicant). I have 4 years of university teaching experience, and I do freelancing on the side and am about to finish my Master's in IT, but I’m running into an issue with the reference letters.

Due to a toxic work environment with my immediate superiors, I'd prefer not to request a recommendation from my direct supervisor.

Can the professional reference come from a peer or colleague I’ve taught with, or does it have to be an immediate head/supervisor? Thanks in advance!

Reapplying Years Later

Hello!

I am inquiring to see if there are any individuals who have applied several times to JET. I have only applied once, got rejected, and then hired from a dispatch company and now live in Japan. However, I am concerned I was not considered a candidate for JET as I talked too much about past heath issues I have (which don’t impact my work today). I did not mention these issues on my dispatch company applications (yes, I understand the competitiveness is not even the same). I am applying to JET again three years later, and now I am wondering whether or not I should or shouldn’t give the in-depth info about past health issues. In other words, if I don’t mention anything this time, if it will be mentioned on an interview based on a past application. I appreciate any help!

Does a fresh grad stand a chance of becoming a filipino ALT?

I’ve seen some posts about previous ALTs who had 5+ years of work experience before becoming an ALT. I was wondering, is there anyone here, or does anyone know someone, who became an ALT as a fresh graduate with no prior work experience?

I know that work experience is not a requirement in the qualifications. I’m just curious if there are people who were able to become an ALT straight out of college, without any prior work experience.

question about the app

just a quick question -

the empty number box that reads 00 next to the major and minors boxes, what are those for? should i enter, 1 - 2 - 3? or leave them at 00? i'm trying to fill out everything best as I can so there's no issue with my application.

Refrence signature?

So I’m confused about how the reference is done some people say it needs to be written out on paper and scanned to PDF and have a signature on it but can’t the person just write it normally in a word doc and just put it to pdf from that? Does it require the signature

Just got offered shortlist status after 5 months of waitlist

Well, it happened. I opened my email yesterday to find an acceptance letter that I will be added to the shortlist for departure in December. They are giving me only 3 days to accept the offer. I'm not sure what to do. I have a full time job in the states as an ESOL coordinator. I love my job here even though the pay is horrible. But it's always been a goal of mine to go to Japan.

Any advice? I was pretty much treating the waitlist as a 'no'... in fact I sort of forgot about it. I wasn't planning to apply for the 2027 cycle either. But it feels like I've got a golden opportunity in the palm of my hand. Why throw it away now?

Recommended Places to Request

Hi! I'm reapplying for the 2027 JET program this year after being accepted (but declining) this past years. I realized my preferences, though of course not guaranteed, are probably not somewhere I'd request to stay if I did get accepted to work in Japan again.

I previously requested Hokkaido (as my town has a sister city there), Shizuoka (I have a friend who teaches there), and Okinawa (Heard good things!).

This year I definitely want to do more research on places that would be ideal for my lifestyle. If anyone can point me in the right direction with some recommendations based on my interests and wants, it would be greatly appreciated!

Hokkaido would be fun and I would love to travel there for winter sports, but it is too similar to my hometown's weather, so I would like to experience something warmer (so, anything south of Hokkaido!).

I would ideally like to be close to public transportation and live in a relatively large city with an active city life and night life. If there is a big food and art/music scene that would be an additional plus! If the cost of living is lower that is extra great.

I heard Kobe is great for Jazz and night life, so I am going to do more research into there!

** As we all know, a placement request doesn't guarantee anything. I am fully aware despite my request I may be placed somewhere completely different, however this is also a great way for me to get a better understanding of Japan's geography and possible places I'd like to travel to!

TIA :)

JET vs teacher’s college

Hi guys! I’m a Canadian aspiring JET and my end-of-the-line goal is to become a teacher in Ontario. I heard about this opportunity recently and fell in love with it after a recent spiral (I have a great GPA but not so much experience, so I realized I can only attend the non-competitive teachers colleges that are far from home). I felt like this would be so fulfilling!!

I have a feeling I’ll be admitted to the GPA-heavy colleges; while I won’t hate living far from home, I feel like it’ll be so expensive in the long run and I don’t have that kind of money yet since I’ve only had summer and part-time jobs ;((

So! I really want to do this, not purely for the monetary aspect, but I feel like this journey would be good for me both in a life-experience way and an experience profile way. It feels like something I’d like to do for myself, and I feel so passionate about bringing my knowledge to Japan and taking knowledge back home.

Not only that, but from what I understand, a full year with JET can also provide me with 1200+ teaching hours which might help me get into a more competitive but commutable school when I come back and reapply!! Even if I don’t get it, I feel like the take-home income from JET (I estimate 17-21kCAD) can hugely offset the tuition and high living expenses if I end up going to the farther teacher’s college.

I’m here because I’m really scared of it being a huge gamble in the end. The acceptance dates come out in Jan-Feb for TC and from what I understand, JET decisions come out in April. Now that Ontario is moving to a 1-year TC program, I think the 2027-2028 school year will begin in May. It’s really cutting it close for these things!!

So I truly want to know how to increase my chances of getting in, if that’s okay! I understand there’s no strict formula and it’s a very opaque process but any experience or advice helps!!

I feel as though if I get into the competitive school (somehow bro) and JET, I’d choose the school. But if I got into JET and a faraway school, I would choose JET. I’m very scared of the dates to pay tuition, deposit, etc.

Does anyone know if being shortlisted means you have a guaranteed spot and just need to wait for an upgrade? Can they rescind you at any time?

Also, I wanted to ask if my background is any good. I haven’t had any overseas experiences yet sadly, but my major is English, I was a class rep in first year (meaning I would help convey things/answer emails and questions for shy students — some of which were ESL and nervous about communicating with the prof), ran a non-profit handmade card service for my peers who needed help and motivation, tutored second year, and did classroom volunteering (peace x peace) last year. I might do it again this year!! My Japanese knowledge is little to none and I might get a TEFL it helps (but can only afford a cheap one).

Also, in HS, I remember volunteering with an organization that helped Indonesian students learn English and speak more confidently by talking to them and engaging in conversations; it sounds extremely relevant to what I might be doing at JET. But recently, I found that it no longer exists so I’m not sure what to make of it. The program’s socials are inactive and there’s proof of me being in a groupchat with other mentors years ago, and I’m in touch with one of my students on WhatsApp! But other than that, I don’t know how to prove I was a part of it or how to report my hours.

Anyway, any advice really helps!! If anything, I might just go to teacher’s college and reapply next year for JET before actually settling down and teaching in Ontario. I don’t wanna be too risky,, and I think these things go hand-in-hand with each other. JET strengthens my teachers college app, and teachers college may strengthen my JET app (although I know being a certified teacher is not a requirement).

Help!! Sorry for writing so much. I’m a bit stressed as we have less than a month left to apply to TC. I hope I can do this someday 🥹🥹 ty for reading!! 💗
