discussion What on earth happened to Grab Food?

so I lived here 2013-2023, then moved away for a few years and just now moved back. Not much has changed.. except Grab Food seems totally crap.

The UI is worse, there are constant in-app popups getting in the way of doing stuff, and a lot of the filters or categories are gone. Also, and I don't know if it is just the bad UI or real, but there seem less restaurants listed?

I'm guessing there is some kind of pad krapao trend going on as well, considering how half the restaurants are focused on it. Are there any better apps now?

discussion Dumb business idea or potential goldmine: Opening a legit German-style Döner spot in Bangkok?

Hear me out guys. Every time I get back to Europe, I realize how much I miss a proper German-style Döner Kebap with actual crispy bread and legendary garlic sauce.
Is there a genuine market for this in BKK or am I just severely hallucinating from jetlag? I know there are a few places scattered around, but could a high-quality, authentic Döner shop actually survive among all the top-tier street food here, or would I be bankrupt within a month?
Be honest: masterpiece idea or absolute disaster?

question At home water filters?

Back home I had a Brita pitcher for my fridge, and I refilled it quite often. I didn’t use many single-use plastics, and liked knowing I was contributing less to the overall trash problem. Here, it’s like there’s no choice…

Or is there?

Since I don’t exactly understand what the common problems with the water are, I can’t shop for a system that might mitigate them.

1- What are the common problems with the water?
2- Are there any countertop or pitcher-type devices that can be used confidently here?

shopping Bangkok in December: trusted shops for ready-made gem jewelry and lab-grown stones?

Hi! I'll be in Bangkok for a week in December and want ready-made jewelry only, no custom work: gem-set rings, pendants, bead strands and bracelets.

I'm looking at natural yellow sapphire, ruby, pearl, red coral, or citrine, garnet, carnelian and rainbow moonstone, plus lab-created yellow sapphire and ruby.

I'm planning to browse JTC, Gem Tower/Mahesak Road, Charoen Krung, MBK and Chatuchak Weekend Market.

Which shops or floors do you trust, and which would you avoid? For Chatuchak, which sections are best for gems and jewelry?

What are realistic prices for good natural vs lab-created yellow sapphire and ruby, and is quick resizing doable?

Quality and value matter most, and I'd like to carry pieces home. Recent experiences especially welcome. Thanks!

question How long to recieve residency certificate from TIESC?

Searching online says it can take up to 15 days, so just wondering if anyone has done it recently and how long it took?

Need it for my drivers license renewal and need to plan the dates to go etc.
When it was at the old Chamchuri Square location they could do it within a couple hours but not sure if it's still the same timeframe for TIESC?

question Should I buy esim before landing or right at the airport?

I’m planning to visit Bangkok for 4 days at the end of this months. I’m a solo traveler and this is my second time in Thailand but my experience is short. Last time I got a sim card at Phuket airport and it wasn’t cheap so I’m wondering should I get an esim before or it would be different at Bangkok. Also which esim should I get if it must be prepared beforehand? Thank you🙏

event The Weeknd concert - questions from a foreigner!!

Hi! 👋🏼 I’m travelling to BKK for The Weeknd’s show on 13th October. I wanted to check a couple of things, especially from locals who are frequent concert attendees:

  1. I will have to pick up my ticket from the box office on the day of the show. Do I have to carry my original passport or will a photocopy suffice?? I would prefer to not risk carrying my actual passport.
  2. I have standing tickets. What time should I plan on reaching the venue to make sure I get a decent spot in the audience?
  3. I’m a short woman. How safe and friendly are concert crowds in Bangkok typically?

Thanks all!

Hey,
I’m planning to move to a Duplex apartment in Vittorio. Does anyone of you has experience with the tower or even lives/lived there? I’m generally looking for a two bedroom with at least 130sqm so this one is in the range and also quite good location.

discussion Donation centers with free pickup in Bangkok?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there were any donation centers in Bangkok that also pick up your items for free. My parents live very close to Terminal 21 mall. I live in the US and thus don't have any knowledge of Thai services. My parents have a lot of things that they've kept over the years that they don't use, and at this point it's just taking up space and collecting dust.... and they could really use some extra storage space for the things they actually use. I'd love to help them out and find a donation center that will help pick up items. I'm also okay with paying for pick up services if there's no free service. Thank you!

question Things to know going to a concert at Rajamangala

Hi all.

This will be my first time attending a concert at Rajamangala (11th October) and I had a few questions and was hoping someone could kindly help with answers. For context I have the standing tickets:

  1. I will be collecting tickets on the day of and am wondering how early do you recommend that I go collect the tickets from TTM at the venue

  2. (once I have the tickets with me) How early should I come to the venue before the concert so that I end up having a good-decent experience leading up to the concert?

  3. Am I able to carry a small tote bag with me? With a small handheld fan with the obvious essentials (IDs, money, etc)

  4. Anything else you think would be useful or must have essentials you think would be best to carry on the day to the venue?

  5. Would getting transport be hard after the concert ends? Any recommendations on how to effectively find something (like a grab) after the show ends.

  6. Last but not least, what is the standing experience like for people who have been before? Is it hectic? Any places to sit around if tired etc (new to this so do forgive my ignorance)

Thank you so much in advance.

question Car Rental in Bangkok

Hello guys

I hvae just got my thai drivers license a couple weeks ago. It is my first ever license. Now I would like to rent a car in October to go Erawan / Sai Yok Nationalpark.

The big rental companies all require drivers to hold the license for 1+ years. I have contacted a local rental company. They have Class 1 Insurance but no FCWD. As I asked them what's the deductible they just sent me sample prices for damages. When I asked for the rental contract in advance, they declined to send it due to "business things".

So my guess is their business is having a shady contract and they pressure people into signing once you get there 🤷‍♂️.

So is this just the reality when renting cars in Bangkok or does anyone of you know decent insurance companies?

Thank you!;

question When will the bread come back?

Seems to be all out because of the flood - Big C, tops, and 711 all empty on the shelves. Was all the bread being manufactured or distributed from the flood zone? Sure looks like it.
