I’m visiting Atlanta right now, and I absolutely love it! The urban design, the food, the thrumming night spots, the street art, the parks, the universities… this city is visibly thriving!
There are two trends here that I’ve picked up on however, that I find extremely annoying, and far more prominent than other American cities:
- E-bikes and scooters. They are everywhere, people go so fast on them, and they never have helmets. People seemingly ride these scooters up and down the sidewalk, without paying attention, then just leave the scooter in the middle of the sidewalk? As for the e-bikes, there are some of them that might as well be full-powered gas motorcycles, just absolutely ripping down the Beltline. Are folks here just ok with this behavior? Seems selfish and dangerous, but maybe I’m off the mark.
- Playing music from a speaker or cell phone for all to hear. This phenomenon seemingly ties in with the previous one a ton of the time, and I find it so annoying! Some of the speakers folks use here to blare their music are super strong too… and I never enjoy the music! Why does it always seem like folks are blaring the most annoying music possible, and why do they do it? Do they think that other folks want to hear it?
I’ll reiterate that I have observed these trends in other American cities as well, but they are both way, way more prominent here than elsewhere.
was wondering if anyone who lives here have thoughts about it. I’m always trying to understand the intersections of geography, economics, and culture.
