He kneeded that

This teenager wouldn't stop kicking a passenger's seat after multiple requests, so the man reclined it back and the impact left the kid injured

Obviously, the company has reclining seats so they are allowed to recline.

But it seems common enough that people get annoyed about them. I have had people mouth off to me for reclining during longer flights. I pay no mind but I feel like the real problem is that they squeeze the seats so close together to get the extra few seats on the plane, that it ultimately just cuts room out and makes it uncomfortable for everyone.

u/Allout-Okarun 14h ago

What we are seeing here isn’t even a reclining issue. No asshole should have the sole of their foot up near someone’s headrest, it’s not even close to normal etiquette

1

u/Typical_Estimate5420 5h ago

I think if you can physically get your foot up there, you have enough room to sit normally

11

u/Sidivan 15h ago

I’m 6’4”, so I pay for exit row or premium, however the premium is now what basic economy used to be. So once again reclining literally puts my knees in the back of your seat. I can’t do anything about it. Now you’re pissed because my knee is in your back and I have bruises by the time we deplane.

u/Molecular_Drift 13h ago

Same height here and having been a full time and part time mechanic through most of my working life, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to work under cramped dashboards while on my back, propping my lower body up with my lower legs. To experience fitting in some of the positions that I’ve had to, in order to work on vehicles, it makes flying aboard most commercial aircraft a little easier, though it’s not fun being tall.

4

u/SushiboyLi 13h ago

Have you considered the shareholders tho? Stop complaining

3

u/Krasdale79 13h ago

Honestly, people are always forgetting the poor shareholders. Bentleys don't pay for themselves.

1

u/WillingnessIll6371 9h ago

How about diamond encrusted pools? Do those pay for themselves?

1

u/aiezar 8h ago

Not until you encrust the diamonds in

0

u/EGirlToenails 5h ago

It's not the fucking shareholders lol. People want the cheapest flights possible, which means packing everyone in like sardines. I fucking guarantee you that if people stopped paying for the sardine treatment and started favoring more expensive roomier flights that they would accomodate that, because they want money.

Nobody is greedier than the consumer.

2

u/MAFMalcom 5h ago

Sure, let's just all pay more because we've just been CHOOSING to not be able to afford more expensive tickets...

Your mentality is stupid

1

u/SushiboyLi 5h ago

Yes it’s definitely the consumers fault. The bastards

3

u/ezza_t 14h ago

I'm the same height, and the other issue is that when you're watching a movie, the screen ends up too low relative to your eye level, and because the screens have shit viewing angles from the side, you can't really see it properly anymore

3

u/Ambitious_Bit_9389 11h ago

Yep, I think being tall is an advantage in your teens and twenties. By your 30’s, youre settling down and sports aren’t a big feature of your life anymore. I’m thinking “I wouldn’t mind losing a couple inches, 5’10ish would be nice.”

Easier to find clothes, less weight in my knees, not feeling squished all the time

2

u/Chemical_Title_5834 10h ago

That sucks...as does the word, deplane! (Sorry I know it's a real word)

1

u/Mountain_rage 11h ago

Was going to say, it looks like the person was reclining into his knees. Kid was just trying to prevent being crushed. Individual reclining is an asshole, airline and its ceo is the bigger asshole. Kid was assaulted.

2

u/Capable_Pineapple993 9h ago

You’re allowed to recline. End of story. You aren’t allowed to kick the seat in front of you. What is hard to understand about this. Kid deserved it.

1

u/Mountain_rage 9h ago

If you want to live life as an asshole sure. So many dickheads in our society unwilling to compromise. "The CHAIR RECLINES SO I RECLINE!". People like you end up with the floor chicken in restaurants.

1

u/Capable_Pineapple993 9h ago

Dude personally if I’m reclining and the kid says hey can you not I’m tall and it’s hitting my knee then sure I’ll put it up no problem.

But he paid for a seat that reclines…he can recline if he wants to. If the kid asks and he refuses then sure maybe he’s a dick but that doesn’t mean you can kick the chair then play the victim when he simply reclines the chair.

The kid is acting like a toddler.

1

u/MagicHamsta 1h ago

Agreed. You have to be a moron to side with the kid.

Kid wasn't trying to prevent being crushed. He was actively lifting/bracing his leg and kicking/impeding the other guy from reclining.

Brought it completely on himself. If the kid really was being crushed all he had to do is just sit there and call a flight attendant.

Literally just a few moments of discomfort for potentially getting a better seat/upgrade.

1

u/mashmaker86 8h ago

Would you feel comfortable reporting a reclining person to the flight attendants for acting inappropriately? Or is this more of a generosity preference?

This is really strange to me. I guess I haven't flown in years, but when I used to fly it seemed like most people reclined their seats. Has that changed?

1

u/Mountain_rage 8h ago

If I was digging into someones knees, ya I would stop reclining. If I saw they were sitting normal knees against the back of my seat, I would not recline. Its not hard to not be an asshole. What this thread has taught me is Americans are very self centered.

1

u/mashmaker86 8h ago

Your charitable attitude is more commendable than your ability to address specific questions.

1

u/Capable_Pineapple993 8h ago edited 7h ago

You’re acting like there isn’t a middle ground between reclining like an asshole into someone’s knees and never reclining because you’re worried you’ll hurt someone.

1

u/mashmaker86 8h ago

Exactly, that's what I'm trying to explore.

1

u/Capable_Pineapple993 7h ago

Seems like someone reclined into their knees and it really left a mark lol

1

u/Elgecko123 8h ago

To answer your question it has not changed. The seats are made to slightly recline so it is there for you to use. I will say it is definitely more common to do so on a longer flight and even expected when they turn the lights out. But yes common courtesy is to return them back upright for meal service

1

u/Dense_Tumbleweed_949 9h ago

Do you fly with knee Protectors (serious question)?

1

u/Sidivan 9h ago

No. I fly with a plane.

1

u/mashmaker86 7h ago

Not accusing, just asking. Do you also recline?

1

u/Sidivan 7h ago

Nope

-4

u/Significant-Ant-5677 14h ago

Make more money and fly first class if you can’t deal with it.

-5

u/marshaul 15h ago

Sounds like a you problem.

1

u/fritzwillie 13h ago

As we speak, airlines are product testing 'seats' that you lean into standing, rather than plopping your ass down. If you're not comfortable with leaning your whole flight so they can squeeze an extra row or two in, it's a 'you' problem.

1

u/Lemons_Into_Limonite 13h ago

How about some sympathy for your fellow passenger? Stockholm syndrome, eh? He upgrades to the price range he can afford and it’s still not enough because greedy airlines have reduced the amount of space. That truly sucks.

1

u/marshaul 13h ago

What about the person reclining their seat? What if they have severe back pain, for instance? Why is being tall supposed to be some kind of trump card of superior status? "Oh, I'm tall, you should know better than to lean back into my space!"

Really? Yeah fuckin' right. Being tall does not make you special.

1

u/Lemons_Into_Limonite 13h ago

Huh? I didn’t suggest the person shouldn’t recline their seat. They have every right to. In fact I said I would do exactly that, elsewhere, to someone suggesting I was rude to use this feature. Nonetheless when a tall person tries to do what they can do to remedy their situation (upgrading to premium to get a little more space), the normal response is to understand how much it sucks for them. I did not say sacrifice your own comfort by keeping your seat upright, however. You have every right to use the seat the way it was designed.

1

u/marshaul 13h ago

Well it sounds like we are in agreement, since in my mind having sympathy for my fellow passenger means not assuming I know why they are reclining their seat, and that they might have comfort reasons every bit as compelling as my desire to not have them do so.

I personally do not recline my seat during meal service, but if the person in front of my reclines any other time, I am likely to do so as well.

1

u/FanOfForever 13h ago

The person you first replied to, and the person they were replying to, both made it clear that the airlines cause this problem by putting the seats too close together. How did you manage to lose sight of that?

1

u/marshaul 12h ago

Look around; there are loads of people as tall as this guy describing how they manage to cope, meanwhile he's hyperbolically whining about "bruised" knees. That sounds like a him problem.

1

u/WaxWeb 14h ago

How about not to be an asshole and just don't recline to not harm other people?

4

u/Punman__5 14h ago

Reclining a seat is not asshole behavior no matter what. If the seat can recline then the airline expects people to recline them.

4

u/Cannedwine14 14h ago

I’m definitely reclining on long flights lol

2

u/stayinalive7 14h ago

Yeah, I'm 6'4" also and can accommodate someone reclining in front of me. I can position myself so that my knees are in the seat but I'm not obstinately trying to prove a point so I sit up, spread my legs a little, and move my feet further under their seat. It's not a problem. I also am going to recline, there's a reason the button that controls that is on my arm rest and isn't controlled by the person behind me.

1

u/MickTriesDIYs 13h ago

What the fuck are they feeding you guys?

1

u/stayinalive7 13h ago

When I was 12 I had an insatiable appetite which I attempted to slake with Little Debbie cakes, pudding, Doritos, and other highly processed American foods that are rich in simple carbs. As a result, I became fat as hell for a short period. Not long after, I grew over a foot taller and maintained the same weight. No idea if any of that is related, but wanted to do my best to answer your question.

1

u/MickTriesDIYs 8h ago

I felt like you probably just had really tall folks but okay. Thanks for the response!

-1

u/primefart 14h ago

I had a very tall guy sit behind my young daughter once on a long haul. She was cranky and obviously no way to get too comfortable. I recline her seat to get her comfortable. The man politely asked me to put it back. I hadn't noticed his height until then. I stepped over my daughter and stood on the isle where I could check his situation. I didn't need to do that because we paid for reclining seats.

I could see his knees were completely squeezed and looked very uncomfortable. However, his knees were clearly not worse off because of the reclined seat. The section where the recline started was above his knee. There would have been no way for him to bring his knees up anyway. I pointed this out to him and said I would not recline the seat. He complained and the stewardess asked me kindly if I could put the seat back up. I explained the same thing to her and asked if I was required to comply with the guy's request. She said no.

The guy accepted his fate, and I think he was just overall uncomfortable and didn't like the idea of the back of the seat also reducing his overall space. It honestly would have still been hard for me to not recline even if it was clearly bothering his knees. Here I had my toddler about to melt down from being so exhausted, so I was going to choose between improving her comfort or improving this guy's perception of his comfort. Easy choice for a dad.

The exchange was civil and not loud or heated. A woman a few seats away made a nasty comment about me. I told her to fuck off and mind her business, and if she wanted to she could try to consolidate seats with him and stand the whole flight to make him comfortable. She kept mouthing off and i ignored her. I'm a nice guy but there are limits.

1

u/SushiboyLi 13h ago

Whole ass novel to cope with being unaccomadating while expecting everyone to accommodate your child

0

u/primefart 13h ago

I paid for a seat that reclines. There is no coping and no need to accomodate. You can co plain to the airlines if you don't like it.

0

u/SushiboyLi 11h ago

With new plane seat tech on the horizon your days of reclining will be over eventually

1

u/primefart 14h ago

It's no one's fault. I think this is the kind of thing where you can ask nicely for someone not to recline but if they don't you can't get upset and complain. You pay for a seat and if reclining comes with it, then you should recline if you want. A tall person is unlucky if they sit behind someone who will recline even if they ask nicely. Tall and obese people are at a massive disadvantage when they fly. It's not anyone else's fault.

1

u/Elgecko123 14h ago

I agree it’s not a tall persons fault.. but obese? That’s usually on them

1

u/primefart 14h ago

Yeah that's why I said it's not anyone ELSE's fault.

1

u/garry_tash 14h ago

Nah, if I’m paying for my seat I’m gonna do whatever I want.

0

u/WaxWeb 14h ago

Downright sociopathic behavior.

Consider professional help, please.

1

u/garry_tash 12h ago

What actual harm is it doing to anyone though? The seats don’t recline back that far. At least, not on any flights I’ve been on anyway.

1

u/Elgecko123 7h ago

lol they called your behavior sociopathic for using the chair how it’s intended and designed for.. these people are nuts

1

u/thehammockdistrict24 11h ago

"Downright sociopathic behavior. Consider professional help, please."

Say that shit into a mirror.

If the plane allows your seat to recline, you are allowed to recline.

1

u/Lemons_Into_Limonite 13h ago

Entitled much? The seats are made to recline, so if you buy a seat behind another seat, you should expect that. If you can’t handle a seat reclining in front of you, buy a seat with no seat in front of you. I would love to run across you on a flight and recline my seat.

1

u/WaxWeb 13h ago

What are you guys not getting? Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you have to, especially when it makes things worse for somebody else.

I’d be more than happy to have you sitting in front of me and tap out the drum beat to my favorite metal song on the back of your seat with my knees. So far, everyone’s put their seat back up within three minutes.

2

u/Lemons_Into_Limonite 13h ago

You are right… I don’t have to…and yet I may choose to, if it helps me feel more comfortable. Just because you can feel entitled to have me keep my seat up that I paid for doesn’t mean you have to, either. You could choose to explain your situation without entitlement and I might have sympathy for you and decide I can sit upright for the time being. But grown adults don’t drum out rhythms on the seats of people following appropriate airline rules either. And because I know how to behave civilly, I can politely ask the flight attendant to intervene on my behalf. They are going to side with the person sitting calmly in their seat, not the baby masquerading as an adult. Before you know it you will be causing a disturbance and being thrown off the flight when the flight attendant asks you to stop harassing the person in front of you…so good luck with your approach. Do that and you will definitely have more leg room in just a short amount of time.

1

u/ihateveryonebutme 12h ago

"I know how to behave civilly" "i would love to run across you on a flight and recline my seat" lmao.

1

u/Lemons_Into_Limonite 12h ago

Yep! Meet someone with a backbone. I am always willing to meet people halfway but I don’t allow others to steamroll me either. Apparently you don’t understand how you will be treated the way you treat others. Come to me with your problem, speak to me respectfully and I can likely keep my seat up to make a stranger happy, or compromise and do it less, if I truly need it down at the moment. Come at me like I am the problem, with rudeness and a sense of entitlement? And you honey will now understand that YOU are the problem. When you walk around in life with a chip on your shoulder, you will continue to be a miserable human. Good luck with that approach. Try treating others the way you want to be treated, for better results.

1

u/ihateveryonebutme 12h ago

Okay, but that's not steamrolling. Thats you literally saying you wish you could do something to make someone unhappy.

1

u/The_Fink_Ployd 14h ago

Why, when presented with an opportunity to; Be kind, Be silent, and to Be unnecessarily rude , you chose the latter? Twice?

Why are you a jerk? I’m not asking if you’re allowed to be, I’m asking why are you a jerk? What combination of life experiences produces someone like you?

1

u/marshaul 14h ago

Is that a serious question? How long have you been posting on reddit? My life experience consists of interacting with humans for my entire life. That is what produces a person like me.

1

u/EngineeringOk6457 14h ago

It’s also free to not assume everyone owes making your life a little more convenient for you

1

u/WaxWeb 14h ago

What exactly is so hard to understand about this?
For anyone who’s even slightly above average height these days, the already cramped situation on a plane can become downright painful when the person in front reclines their seat. The seatback literally presses into your knees because there simply isn’t enough space. And all because some hobbits think they’re entitled to turn their seat into their own private lounge area, because fuck everyone else.

2

u/Lemons_Into_Limonite 13h ago

It can also be downright painful NOT to recline, for some people too. As someone who has had back pain since being rear-ended by another car many years ago, reclining helps. How about understanding that the world does not revolve around you, and that people have their own needs and reasons for doing things, if a person reclining in front of you is going to make you turn in to a grumpy hateful person, buy a seat with no seat in front of it so you don’t have to resort to displaying entitled behavior. Now if you ask nicely and I am feeling ok/ don’t need to recline at the moment I will work with you. But if you come at me with an entitled attitude about what I need to do for you, you absolutely will not get the result you want. I don’t deal with the entitled and rude ‘tude very well.

3

u/marshaul 14h ago edited 14h ago

No, sociopathic would be if I agreed with your original sentiment, "fuck everybody else".

Remember, it's just you. Fuck you, and your entitled bullshit "everyone owes me" attitude. You deserve to have the guy in front of you lean back, every flight, the rest of your life. Just you.

You think because you're tall, that makes you special and deserving of special consideration. But you don't consider whether the person in front of you has, say, sciatica, and the upright angle of the seat causes pain which might be even more acute that the discomfort caused to your precious knees. Or countless potential other afflictions that they don't parade around, like height.

Nobody likes having the seat in front of us reclined, we just deal because we know we aren't the main character, and we don't presume their decision to recline their seat is "rude" or has anything to do with us at all, other than being an inevitable inconvenience.

They literally are entitled to do that same as you are. The airline is the one that allows or disallows seats from reclining. Don’t make up rules that don’t exist and get mad when people break them.

-1

u/SushiboyLi 13h ago

Bro if the seat is any indication of what I’m allowed to do then I’m allowed to use the ash tray embedded in the armrest too

1

u/Punman__5 13h ago

Completely different thing. There’s no federal rules about reclining your seat like there is about smoking. And you are allowed to use the ash tray if you want to put something in there. Idk why you would but it’s not like there’s a rule against putting change in there or something.

0

u/SushiboyLi 13h ago

There are federal rules on when you are allowed to recline. Would be easy to make it at all times

Exactly this. Not everyone wants to nap or eat at the same time. It happened to me that the guy in front was sleeping with a reclined seat while food was being served.

3

How do you know the person is an asshole?

6

u/KindaFuck3dUp 15h ago

The one with their foot on the back of the seat in front of them?

1

u/AudiC7S6 13h ago

No, the asshole that pushed back!!

1

u/Real_Life_Sushiroll 5h ago

That person wasn't the asshole here.

0

u/Lost-on-Reception 14h ago

He's reclining his seat into the people behind him. He says right there.

He correctly identifies the airlines as the source of the problem, but also does what he can to make it worse.

2

u/wasted90210 14h ago

So reclining the seat that is designed to recline. Interesting.

1

u/Lost-on-Reception 13h ago

In the space it wasn't designed to be put in.

2

u/slitteral1 12h ago

Obviously it is designed to go into that space

1

u/Lost-on-Reception 12h ago

No, it wasn't. Seat pitch has been reduced dramatically and old reclining seats are moved up and used to fill additional rows. New seats designed for the reduced pitch don't really recline like that anymore.

2

u/slitteral1 12h ago

But they still do and you are paying for that feature.

-1

u/Lost-on-Reception 11h ago

My neighbor pays for giant blue spotlights to shine on his yard at night. Doesn't make him less of an ass for using them.

0

u/Lost-on-Reception 5h ago

He just said people get annoyed at him for reclining on them on long flights.

1

u/jakeStacktrace 15h ago

I don't like to deal with assholes. I think that's common ground we can agree on. That's about it.

4

u/Elgecko123 14h ago

Ya I didn’t realize the people against using the recline exists until a flight last year. It was a long overseas flight and I hear a “are you kidding me” as I recline back. He gets up and in my ear and says “I hope you are reallll comfortable bc I’m not!”. I explained how the person in front of mean leaned back and now I am, and guess what? So can he! I did compromise and pull my suit back upright when any food/bev service was coming. But wtf, I thought everyone wanted to recline their seat on 8+ hour flights

3

u/AudiC7S6 13h ago

Not in someone’s lap!

1

u/strategery24 12h ago

I tend not to recline as a courtesy. Those seats are super close. It is one’s right, however. The issue in the video is the kid with his feet up on the back of the seat in front of him kicking or pushing. The response was completely appropriate.

1

u/Elgecko123 10h ago

On long overseas flights especially, where they turn the lights off for people to sleep, I expect the person in front of me to lean back and recline for a little extra comfort. I also expect to do the same for my seat, and the person behind me is welcome to do the same if they so please. This is why the airlines give you the option, for a tiny bit of relief. I do believe it is common courtesy though, to bring your seat back upright when there is food service.

1

u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 10h ago

I just make sure to cough and sneeze untill they put the seat back up.

1

u/HenryHackett 9h ago

I assure I won't notice with my noise canceling ear buds in and sleep mask. But I'm sure the other ppl around you will think you're a cool dude

1

u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 9h ago

But you will feel the mist because I'm also not covering my sneezes or coughs.

1

u/Ordinary-Bear-7377 8h ago

I honestly don't know how I feel about this setup. I can see both sides of it. But if you think you are the craziest person on earth, and no one will beat the fuck out of you midflight for sneezing on their face, ur living in fantasy land lol

1

u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 8h ago

Try me mid flight see how it goes for you.

I can't help I sneezed my bad. But your overreaction would have you beaten down, hog tied, and likely removed at the next stop.

1

u/Ordinary-Bear-7377 8h ago

Oh we are both being arrested, I don't doubt that one bit. Sneezing on someone's face is assault. Just like the boot to your face you are getting after sneezing on someone...

1

u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 6h ago

It's kind of impossible not to sneeze in someones face when it's in your lap. Oops sorry. One solution here would be to not be in someones face or lap but to call it assault is a far shot. Not like its spitting or hitting, I'm talking sneezing and coughing that... Noone can help.

1

u/halfasleep90 7h ago

That’s assault

1

u/WishinGay 9h ago

The theoretical etiquette among veteran fliers is that if it's bedtime where you are departing from, you recline. Otherwise, you do not.

1

u/dantemortemalizar 9h ago

It's all fun and games until you get to the bulkhead row and they can't recline. So they are stuck with your head in their lap. Thank god, that was a relatively short flight. I had to stick my head out sideways to eat.

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 13h ago

These seats recline like maybe 3" at the apex of the seat. Anyone complaining about it can get over it.

2

u/Old_Competition3094 10h ago

And how much does 3" of extra space cost if you were to upgrade?

u/Elgecko123 12h ago

In my opinion the relief on the lower back and comfort for the person reclining is much greater than the discomfort caused to the person losing a little space behind the reclined. So on long flights, especially when they darken the cabin for people to sleep, why doesn’t everyone just lean the seat back? It evens out for everyone and we are all more comfortable

2

u/TrulyOutrageous42 10h ago

Heaven forbid people think of the general welfare of everyone instead of just themselves. Society as we know it might just fall apart if we started... retch... caring about other people's well-being.

1

u/Elgecko123 10h ago

It’s not that I don’t care about the people behind me, it’s just that we can all put our seats back and be more comfortable. It’s almost like the seats were designed for that so we can try to nap on long flights. I am all for seats coming back upright for meal service, and this seems to be a pretty common courtesy. But for the general welfare of everyone, we should all get that two extra inches of recline and all be a tiny bit more comfortable together.

Because some of us are too big for that. My knees don't evaporate just because your lower back feels better. I can't un-knee myself. I have long legs. This wasn't a choice I made.

1

u/Numerous_Photograph9 8h ago

The part where your knees are doesn't really change much, if at all. The recline is a pivot, not a move back of the entire seat.

1

u/ExtraRecognition2099 10h ago

Because you fucking purchased a seat that has the ability to recline Jesus Christ

1

u/wereinatree 12h ago

It makes a noticeable difference for the person reclining and a negligible “encroachment” for the person behind them. I’ve never been on a flight where I felt affected by the seat reclining in front of me, and I fly a lot.

The seat reclines and I’m allowed to use it. If that ruins your day, speak to your therapist about that.

You asked your 14 year old daughter? So neat. Maybe go talk to her mom if you want someone who might think your opinion matters.

Oh wait. 😂

Embarrass yourself on the flight, go ahead. I’ll get a flight attendant involved to help the rowdy giant man shut the fuck up if needed. Your pathetic passive aggression won’t embarrass me, and will just draw attention to yourself. Go ahead. Get banned because you can’t behave in public.

“Out you to the entire plane” (for reclining) is actually hilarious. You think anyone will care? I’d laugh at the strange man who can’t manage his emotions. You’d probably involve your daughter then too, ridiculous man. 😆

Btw it’s pretty disgusting that you have a teenage daughter and spend your time commenting about the looks of teenage girls Reddit. Absolutely disgusting creep.

1

u/Elgecko123 10h ago

Sounds like you will just embarrass yourself to the entire flight. Why would the airlines give you the option to recline the seat if you are not allowed to use it?

Common etiquette used to be not to recline until after dinner. Tbh I find it's generally still followed but not by all. And I do appreciate that some people might have just got off a very long transit flight so it's not something that bothers me too much

I tell you what, you arrange to pay for a massage after my flight, and I will refrain from reclining the seat I paid for. and deal with the discomfort of a past car accident for you in exchange. Otherwise NO.

Ha ha you sound miserable, you should try smiling more. I will work with anyone who can come to me civilly with a problem, but your comfort also does not trump mine honey. You can try it but that attitude won’t fly with me. ☺️

2

u/tyen0 13h ago

won’t fly with me

that was their point! :p

but, yeah, aside from covid, I've flown multiple flights a year for a few decades now and I've never encountered someone complaining about the seat in front of them being reclined.

Aw you poor thing… a cramped flight is not exactly ideal for anyone. But you deal with it because presumably you aren’t a baby. You are indeed not any more important than me, and I will not allow you or anyone else to bully me out of what I paid for to be at least mildly comfy on my flight. Pick a seat with no seats in front of you, if you can’t bear the thought of someone daring to use the recline feature. How delicate of you. Lol.

The seats are designed to recline for a reason, if I paid for the seat then I will utilize it for my comfort on long haul flights-deal with it or upgrade.

Then it should bother the person behind you if it isn’t really a recline. Thanks for clearing that up

Not necessary to “look it up,” I worked for an international airline for years and fully understand the unspoken rules for reclining one’s seat. On overnight long haul flights it is completely acceptable and even expected for comfort and rest, short haul can be a bit more controversial.

u/Elgecko123 13h ago

Well first of all the person in front of me reclined first so yes I was just part of the domino effect at that point so shouldn’t the person behind me just do the same? Secondly why do planes have this feature on the seats if we aren’t supposed to use it?

I reclined my chair on the flights to and from Japan, and on the trains. As did the Japanese people around me.

You would not be happy in Japan if you have an issue with space. They don't have the same personal bubble and being crammed like sardines is the norm.

1

u/Honda_TypeR 12h ago

Yea it’s for this reason they need to either reduce seat count to add recline space, or just remove recline from all seats.

Keeping both just creates situations between passengers, and any conflicts between passengers can result in bans

It’s like a twisted sociological experiment.

1

u/monkiibutt 5h ago

It reclines like a 1/2 " ridiculous. I remember when it went back a whole 2"

1

u/_TheSingularity_ 5h ago

I don't mind people reclining their seats, especially on longer flights, it's a must.

However, what I do hate is when morons recline/raise them suddenly all the way. Bro, I could have some drink or food or something on the little table that is part of your backrest ffs. Be a bit conscious about it when you do it.

1

u/IceTrue7012 1h ago

If the person behind you has their ass to the back of their seat and knees into the back of your seat (tall with no room even though they are sitting up straight) then don't make it worse and lean your chair back.

I don't even understand the pleasure in leaning your seat back 1 degree. It doesn't even make you much more comfortable (if at all) but it sure as hell can make the person behind you less comfortable if they already had no room.

1

u/OldinMcgroyn 13h ago

They can recline too. If they have an issue with it- theyve got alot to work on.

0

u/MyldExcitement 14h ago

Recline all you want, I'm short. Hell, I'd probably offer a super tall person my exit row seat. Especially if I didn't pay extra and tall person had a window or aisle. No, I'm not switching for your kid.

0

u/Weak-Price7392 14h ago

yes 100% its a company made issue that it transfered into people blaming each other

0

u/TightSexpert 14h ago

Well you obviously ask if your reclining would hinder the person behind you.

0

u/SeeMeInWoW 12h ago

The best reply is always "work harder and buy first class then"

1

u/BeachAndBuds 10h ago

No it isn't

0

u/texangadfly 11h ago

You’re literally cutting into the several inches of space they barely have. It’s selfish.

2

u/Daihashi 11h ago

The tilt of the seat is an amenity that comes with the seat that you purchased with your own hard earned money. It's not selfish to use what was included in the purchase of the ticket.

It's selfish to deny people what is included in the price of their ticket.

1

u/texangadfly 10h ago

That would be cool and all if there was enough space in the first place, but there’s not.

2

u/Daihashi 10h ago edited 10h ago

It would be cool if I didn't have herniated discs from being crushed by 12000lbs at a young age, and that I am in pain by being upright at a 90 degree angle for multiple hours on end.

I paid for my seat, which includes a 15 degree tilt that helps to relieve the tremendous pain I go through when traveling.

It is not selfish to use what a person paid for. You're directing your frustration to the wrong people. Your fellow passengers are not the problem for using the amenities. It's the airlines that are the problem for continuously cramming more and more seats on the plane.

Please lay blame where it actually should be laid.

1

u/texangadfly 10h ago

I agree that it’s the airline’s fault

Maybe you should be paying for extra leg room. I’m still gonna think you’re an asshole

1

u/KingBera 11h ago

Oh well

1

u/BeachAndBuds 10h ago

I totally get that standpoint. At the same time though, why do the airlines offer the ability then lol

1

u/texangadfly 10h ago

Because they themselves are selfish and prioritize profit over people’s comfort.

0

u/really_rockin_u 10h ago

So you know it makes it uncomfortable for everyone but still put it back?

0

u/ShivaFatalis 7h ago

This is a poor people problem. Glad I never have to deal with it.

-2

u/Boleyn100 15h ago

People who recline the seat as soon as they can and leave it reclined all flight really piss me off, it leaves hardly any room for the person sitting behind them.  Fine when everyone is going to sleep but not fully reclined for the whole flight.

4

u/primefart 14h ago

But honestly it really shouldn't piss you off. It's the airline that designs this and allows it. The person pays for a seat that comes with reclining. Besides take off, when person in front is eating, and landing, I could care less how long they want to keep it reclined. And yes, it upsets me that airlines allow this, but I can't imagine blaming people for using what they pay for.

4

u/Yesthisisdogmeow 14h ago

Everyone reclines. Everyone. Stop lying to yourself and others. Every flight I’ve ever been on I look around and every single seat is reclined. You want more room? Go pay for first class and stop blaming fellow passengers for airlines squeezing you into this small space to begin with.

1

u/coolnbreezey 14h ago

Right on

1

u/Elgecko123 7h ago

Yup, they are made to recline. I expect the person in front of me is going to recline, I am going to recline when I want to sleep or get more comfortable, and the person behind me should do the same. I do think we should have the common courtesy to go back upright for food service though

3

u/Rumble-Muffin 14h ago

If they don’t like it, they can recline their seat. We’re all in a small tin can with wings.

Chill the fuck out.

2

u/Pirate_Spy_Guy 14h ago

Then bit first class. You’re alowed to recline your seat

2

u/Itchy_Axehole 14h ago

if you recline yours, then its the same space as if both were not reclined. So recline or stfu

2

u/garry_tash 14h ago

Why does it piss you off though?

2

u/Biscuits4u2 14h ago

Unless otherwise indicated by the staff passengers have the right to recline their seats whenever they want. This little shit was sticking his nasty foot on the headrest and pushing on it to purposefully harass the person in front of him. If you aren't happy with the amount of room a reclined seat leaves you you are welcome to purchase a business or first class ticket.

2

u/Punman__5 14h ago

Why are you mad at the people and not the airline? It’s not the people’s fault for using a feature the airline entitles them to use.

1

u/Happily-Incorrect 14h ago

I don't even understand it as the degree of recline barely makes it any more comfortable for the recliner, but totally ruins the flight for the person behind!

1

u/wereinatree 12h ago

“Totally ruins the flight” lmao

I’m struggling to believe that you people actually fly. I have never once felt affected by the person in front of me reclining and my flight count is well into the triple digits. It’s so bizarre to me that some people have such an issue with it, but luckily that’s their problem and not mine.

1

u/Happily-Incorrect 11h ago

It's just uncomfortable. The area in front of you is your personal space and they put themselves into it. It just sucks and restricts your freedom to move your legs too.

1

u/Glum_Activity_461 14h ago

Get over it pal.

1

u/coolnbreezey 14h ago

Get over yourself
