Discussion She almost ruined a proposal.

This was at Crescent Bay Point Park, which allows people to book it special occasions.

I live in this area and tbh public proposals and engagement photoshoots are kind of a plague. They happen everywhere, all the time, people are way too casual about littering (I've picked up too goddamned many of those fake rose petals), and it often is legit hard to go for a walk in the park without someone complaining that you're ruining the shot. Technically you need a permit for this very reason.

So I didn't think she shoulda done it, but I understood UNTIL the racism. Ergo, fuck her.

You know, that's really helpful context. I'm a bit chastened because I was reading to see and upvote anyone who commented on how Laguna is full of conservative, rich, old (mostly) elitist boneheads. And while that's largely true based on my repeated experiences - your point is well taken.

I REALLY hate those fake flower petals. Trash from trash people!!

You are not wrong. Being a broke socialist I'm definitely a stranger in a strange land here; a relative bought a tiny, dilapidated surf shack in the late 60s and when they passed I was the only one in the family dumb enough to take on the upkeep. I spend a lot of time internally snarling at the NIMBY af, lowkey (or highkey) racist, meddling busybody locals who call themselves progressive because they have "IN THIS HOUSE WE BELIEVE" yard signs but act like they're defending Buckingham Palace when the commoners show up. The lady in the OP is Exhibit A.

But... two things can be true. Laguna is teeny. There's not a lot of public space, just because of unavoidable facts of geography/geology, and of course there is no goddamned parking. For being so beautiful, it makes a terrible location for social media content creation -- and when everyone on earth has the same idea, there's so little room left for people, locals and non-locals alike, to actually enjoy it for what it is.

they are an absolute cancer! i don't live here but i see the same shit at spots in LA. lol. it's so dumb. these are little spots, not set up for this traffic. they littler, blast music, fuck up parking... it's a nightmare. also the sheer volume is bananas. it's endless. fuck em.

Don't even get me started on the candles

Real fire candles

Around dry-ass vegetation in southern California.

It's like jfc Madisyn do you really want your extremely romantic social media content to become an international news item?!

This is helpful. I kind of read the situation as both sides likely wrong and both sides acting entitled to things they aren't necessarily owed. It's basically the safe best in most of these situations.

Obviously, the racism is fucked. It will sway the audience as it should, but rather than sway it towards the other side, it should simply sway one's view of the woman. There's lot of rules that people don't think apply to them, but apply to others—all around and on both sides. Both sides wrong.

The woman is racist and a jerk. Proposal looks so overly staged though

I came here to say this. Fuck that lady! But all this just to propose is a little much in my humble opinion.

Yep. Just for internet points

I think of it as I get to see this cool view on my day to day all the time, this couple gets like 20 minutes of it and they did something really rad with that time vs my time of just walking a dog or enjoying the sun. The proposals are a feature for me, not a bug! I get a walk and a show lol.

In the grand scheme of getting to live in coastal SoCal they're a minor concern for sure. I'm guilty of snarling internally about fucking Instagram ruining everything a few times but I'd never dream of interfering.

But they’re all fake and set up

Some go for a walk, some go for a proposal, learn to live in society; they're not doing wrong 🙄

It's an organized event with furniture, a band, and an entourage, not just a proposal. No one would give a fuck if someone just chose that spot for an intimate proposal with maybe some friend capturing a video. This is a full on production and it's fucking annoying when these take over the park every other goddamn day.

Guess you missed the part about littering. These types of things are great at generating tons of small plastic trash that other people then have to pick up.

They're not just proposals. They're photoshoots, and some of them are on par with commercial photoshoots as far as props, scale, personnel, and the amount of time they take, except they're usually not being staged by professionals so the logistics aren't managed well.

By law you need a permit, and if everyone who did this got one like they're supposed to, there wouldn't be an issue.

I live here too. And it’s literally Mexicans/Mexican-culture doing these over and over every time. It’s not racism to point out that observation.

another "noticer"

1

u/WritersChopBlock 11h ago

It sorta' is racist to point it out if you imply that this is necessarily a negative thing. You could say the music is too loud or something else annoying but you imply that it's negative because it's Mexican.

1

u/TellMeLaterAlright 11h ago

How do you know it’s Mexican? Did you ask them? Could they not be Americans with Mexican heritage? That’s what makes it entirely racist.

2

u/EnvironmentalCry2623 11h ago

Americans with mexican heritage doesn’t mean it’s not Mexican culture.

2

u/TellMeLaterAlright 10h ago

Right but you said Mexican. I said that’s racist. I’m as American as they come but I’m brown and I love Mariachi music. So if I do it, what does that mean? You don’t know shit about me, you’re just guessing because you perceive something because of how I look (and I’m also from not very far away from this park). You get it now?

2

u/EnvironmentalCry2623 8h ago

I said mexican culture in my original post. I would be correctly perceiving if you’re doing Mariachi music that you’re doing Mexican culture.

What I’m saying is not controversial or racist and you’re trying to put words in my mouth and take the worst possible interpretation in order to force it into a racist narrative

Where does it say you need a permit to do those things?

Right here. [edit: there are also signs at the entrances to beaches and parks that make this clear.]

Professional Still Photo Permit

This permit is intended for limited use, single camera shoots such as engagement photos, wedding photos, family portraits, holiday cards, etc. The fee is $100 for 2 hours plus $50 for each additional hour.

During the summer season from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend, Professional Still Photo Permits are issued only from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. or between 6:00 p.m. and sunset. All other dates can be permitted anytime from 7:30 a.m. to sunset. No permits will be issued after sunset.

Applications are accepted during business hours Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. except holidays, and applications must be received a minimum of 2 business days prior to the photo shoot date for consideration and processing.

Thanks for the plug.

Have you ever reached out to the Parks department or the city about it?

1

u/ItIsSoOrdered23 6h ago

She has her dog out to shit on the grass, I'd rather see a proposal.

1

u/CatCatchingABird 1h ago

If this is such a problem then why don't all of you go to city council with the complaints?

1

u/Mother-Pattern-2609 1h ago

City government knows and they're actually very serious about enforcement, and getting more so. They just can't have cops lurking in every park and on every beach writing tickets for unpermitted photo shoots all day, every day (nor should they).

I was going to give you the world’s tiniest violin until you redeemed yourself at the end.

Oh my god, it's a park. Its public. Get over yourself. People can use it for whatever they want. If they litter or complain about ruining shots then that sucks, but this is literally why we have parks.
