Discussion She almost ruined a proposal.

This was at Crescent Bay Point Park, which allows people to book it special occasions.

I got fired from being a busboy at four of these joints when I was 16 (1995ish) for various issues on Sundays, the worst being pouring a half full pitcher of water on top of a couple who wouldn't stop giving a pregnant server shit because her hair was dyed purple.

I learned pretty quick that I wasn't cut out for customer facing roles.

i was a server for a bit and worked on mother’s day. one customer was like this, just a nasty woman making everyone’s day awful and i just so happened to knock her pepsi all over her. her children looked both thrilled and terrified, but it was a win for me!

Mother's day is a special hell. I remember a woman walking past a line of like three dozen pickup customers and screaming at a 17 year old about how they ruined the most important day of her life because she didn't have time to wait for her togo order she called in that she wanted brought out to her car. It took 25 minutes instead of the 15 online told her, and she already had been given her food, she just had to come in and make sure everyone knew that she had the emotional regulation of a small child.

Valentines is like this too. I think there are a lot of people who only go out once or twice a year and do not know how to act in public lol. I feel bad for them being so improperly socialized, kinda like a mistrained dog.

As a mother with a mother, I refuse to engage in Mother's Day brunch for either of us. If we want brunch, we do it another day or make it at home. It's solely for the reason that I will lose my shit on another customer and their treatment of a service worker. I only worked at McDonald's in my youth for restaurant experience, but I understand how hard it is and how little they get paid (even with tips). I once watched a server get berated by a customer next to me even though I saw they were being kind and professional. When the customer left, I inserted myself and asked if they left a tip (they did not), so I gave the server what cash I had (I think ~$15 - there were two people eating at the table). Shits bad, there's no reason to take it out on someone trying to survive.

Your customer service skills sound fine to me.

certainly served that customer what they were asking for

If I saw that I would’ve left a bigger tip and become a regular.

It sounds like their previous baptism didn’t take and you were just trying to help them with another one. Why would they fire you for that?!

I worked at every level of restaurant service and was goddamn good at it including charm, wit, food knowledge at dives, pubs, and hoity toity joints and let me assure you that it never got less strenuous dealing with the public. You made the right choice.

I'm out now and have been for a long time:

People generally are going out for a nice time but they occasionally seem to ruin it for themselves. Ultimately we evolved from animals and we have all the animal requirements for self preservation that make us shitty when we are hungry or stressed etc. and we take that out on the busboy/waiter/bartender.

Once I was a bartender it was better but still not perfect but I had a schtick that worked for me which was to engage the troublesome customers with a fictional anecdote about myself told in an amusing way that distracted them from their own shit. It 99% worked great.

People are children.

Please share your disarming anecdote!

It was always a little different with parts I made up that were interchangeable. Often involving a beautiful girl who was too good for me breaking my heart by kicking me to the curb. I would use my regulars as foils and they all were somehow part of the story.

No one really knew anything about me.

(There was always morsels of truth cobbled together just to make it more believable).

Reading into it a bit. Sundays were our busiest days, I was a jerk who didn't put up with assholes (probably because of some transference stuff).

I’d have given you a promotion for taking the initiative

Not all heroes wear capes... unless you do wear a cape... no judgement here.

Shitty customers weren't cut out for you facing roles.

I'd have given you a raise lol. You didn't use the hot coffee

I used to collect those little "good news, you're going to hell!" tracts like pokemon, would get one once a week at least. Then I dyed my hair blue and purple, and NO ONE leaves me them any more. It's been years. I'm too much of a godless heathen to try to save anymore, I guess. XD

I’d rather cut grass all day in the sun than deal with customers

I don’t have the ability to mask as much as it takes for continuous customer facing roles
