Discussion She almost ruined a proposal.

This was at Crescent Bay Point Park, which allows people to book it special occasions.

It’s weird that Laguna Beach on its web page wants a permit and fee to take stills on public property. The citizens here also have a problem with people using a public beach.

Currently, we do not offer a permit for engagement/proposal set-ups or luxury picnics.

That's  oddly specific, but also relevant...

I don't get it.  You can get a permit for professional photography...  unless it's an engagement?

On the permit application itself it says: "Professional still photo permits are for family & pet portraits, and engagement/wedding type photo shoots only."

My guess is you're supposed to get a permit for an engagement shoot (and these people probably didn't), but the city is no longer granting them. Maybe because social media engagements have become so popular that there'd be a dozen in the park every weekend these days?

Yes, and there are people that start businesses where all they do is stake out park or beach space for hours and tell other people they can't be there. They set up big umbrellas and blankets. It really became a problem. The park in the OP video is Crescent Bay Point Park, Laguna Beach CA

Probably. I rented an AirBnb for a graduation barbecue but they specifically wrote no engagement or wedding related activities allowed.

Everything else aside why on earth would you need a whole thing for a proposal? It should be a private moment between the couple.

One of my first dates was in Laguna Beach and years later I met my husband in that area. That park, overlooking the ocean, would’ve been a fabulous place for a proposal!

Some people like public things. Some people like to go big. Everyone is different. Don’t yuck someone’s yum

All the places that end with "Beach" in Orange County - Laguna, Newport, Huntington - are all super racist and elitist.

They have all sorts of unusual privatization laws so they can enforce redlining and in general the whole area is awash with weirdly strict laws that are specifically designed to screw over very specific people.

You can add San Juan Capistrano to that list.

The Beaches = the Bitches

I wonder if they were having an issue with people shooting off plastic confetti and not cleaning it up, and other litter. I just saw a post last week of a gender reveal on the beach where they packed up after the reveal and left all their trash on the beach

It’s a very NIMBY city, they don’t want to be inconvenienced by people outside of Laguna Beach

I’m not sure which cities are happy with people coming in and leaving a bunch of trash behind. If these companies had been responsible and respectful and left the area as clean as when they found it there would need to be a city ordinance.

Doesn’t excuse or justify this shitty behavior from a resident.

Agreed, but it’s also really small with a huge demand on its infrastructure. It’s so inconvenient and unpleasant we won’t even go there from our neighboring beach city.

They fine everyone with an iPhone on their property??

Literally the first line of the link you replied to:

Film Permits are required for all motion picture, video and professional still photography

If someone is making money off the landscape (movies, ads, etc) then you need a permit from the city. Not saying I agree with it, but you can use your iPhone for personal photos all you want for free

It’s probably if you need to section off an area so you don’t have random people in your photos or videos?

Its not weird. They created those policies because people are constantly trying to stage content exactly like this in their public spaces and then making the locals feel rude for using their own public spaces because "we are recording" ... "would you mind"

i remember awhile back some kid on tik tok went viral for complaining tourists were using his family's swing on a hill. and when pressed, his family didn't even own that property.

these are just some greedy hicks that think they own things they don't. whenever they come at you with this energy, just ask them what they actually own. and it'll be something like a bullshit box house on some cramped beach neighborhood.

Is this a “professional shoot” or just a personal proposal. It should not need a permit?!

u/No_Host_8024 14h ago

It’s a professional shoot if you pay a photographer.

The issue these places have is that desirable shooting locations become overwhelmed with professional photographers and their subjects to the point they are hard to enjoy for everyone else. And they eventually have significant conflicts between photographers and their groups.

But the complaining lady sucks.

I was so hoping the camera person was gonna drop a “we have a permit.” The lady still absolutely is in the wrong and needed to walk away, but you can’t have that big of a set up with no permit.

u/AccurateJerboa 15h ago

I think if you hire a photographer, a band, and set up chairs it's become a professional shoot

That doesn't mean the lady isn't racist as fuck

There is no couple on this planet that needs to make that big of a deal out of an engagement.
