Someone in a post yesterday commented claiming to be a lineman saying that Indiana's pay package for the work was well below what other states were offering, so they went to work for other states. I've no idea if that's true, but it tracks with what little I know about Indiana.

Partially true. Nipsco also locked out the union in the spring during contract negotiations and that caused them to lose like 40-50 of their best workers according to the nipsco people i talked to.

What's a linesman?

Dudes who work on lines, like power lines.

They protect the quarterback

I am also too non-american to understand this.

The quarterback is the handsome one that throws the ball. The ball is not shaped like a ball though it’s shaped like an egg. But it’s made from the skin of a pig but it’s brown like chocolate. It’s called football, but nobody touches the ball with their feet, except for 2 guys on each team and for different reasons. Hope this helps.

They are just messing with you. The linemen in the power outage story are the workers who work on the electric lines. They will climb poles and or use bucket trucks in their work. A dangerous and normally high paying job.

P.S. Quite often they are called line workers because the workers who performed line work were 100% male. No longer the case. There are now female line workers doing the work. I know some 1st gen female line workers and they had to pass every qualification to get into the line of progression.

The other lineman some are joking about are the (very) big dudes who play on the offensive line in American football. Most often 300+ pounds (136kg/21.4 stone), there job is to block the defensive team attempting to tackle the quarterback when he has the ball and/or block the defensive players so a running back can move the move the ball down the field on a running play.

What's a quarterback?

It’s what you get when you buy $19.75 worth of chocolate chips cookies and pay with a $20 bill

2

u/Viridien111 Aug 23 '26

Does that often need protecting? Times really are tough.

I thought in America, if you buy $19.75 worth of chocolate chip cookies you have to tip at least 30% or you get deported. So I would hand them a a $20 bill and a $5 bill. Never got anything back.

People who build and maintain the power grid.

Have you heard about web searches? They’re amazing. You type in your question, hit enter, and get a result in less than a second.

In another post someone had also mentioned that the team fixing an electrical substation was shot at. They were told by their boss to not return without police.

Edit: here is the source https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/power-restoration-resumes-in-gary-after-nipsco-crew-vehicle-struck-by-gunfire/3975885/

And as mentioned below, the police escorted them and they got it fixed.

And when asked to cite their sources, there was a single link with an isolated incident that said they returned with security without delay. So stop spreading misinformation to fit your narrative

I didn't go back to check the source because I didn't really care. Just something that someone else had commented.

14

u/clearfox777 Aug 23 '26

That’s precisely how misinformation spreads.

Then I apologize, wasn't the intent.

I went back and edited the comment with proper citing and corrected it. You are just being rude now. I changed it to be correct. No need throw insults after someone apologizes and changes.
