They think she's obligated to distribute the funds ($23k) and save everybody instead of taking care of her family

Interesting because $23K isn't $23 million. $23K will not save Gary Indiana. If it would, it'd already be saved.

Hell if I had $23k in funds the first thing I’d do is move out of Gary, Indiana

Probably a wise decision. I've had family live nearby and... not by choice.

I live in Gary by choice. There are million dollar homes a few blocks from me and I’m on the border of a state and national park.

u/Major-Platypus2092 Aug 23 '26

Cool, then. Good to know the area doesn't need any help!

1

u/madmelly Aug 23 '26

We don’t want help from bigots like you.

u/Adventurous-Brain-36 Aug 23 '26

Did you report her?

1

u/madmelly Aug 23 '26

No. What a weird thing to say.

1

u/Adventurous-Brain-36 Aug 23 '26

Just a question.

24

u/elzibet Aug 22 '26

Yeah I’m reading there are over 67k people in that city. Not even 50 cents could go to each person! Jfc people are so dumb

u/Waiting4Reccession Aug 22 '26

They dont care about the other people there lmao, they just want her to give them money and they dont care about anyone else there.

u/IndependenceIcy9626 Aug 22 '26

Sure it wouldn’t save the whole city, but like also who needs $23k as an individual for a blackout?

For $23k her whole family could go on vacation to the Bahamas until they get the power back up.

u/Major-Platypus2092 Aug 22 '26

I understand and agree that it'd be great to spread the funds. I just think it's wild to say that about $23K specifically.

-2

u/IndependenceIcy9626 Aug 22 '26

At some point they just probably should have started refunding the donations or donating them to some org buying people supplies. It’s just crazy to raise $23k for yourself because of a blackout, even if it’s been 2 weeks.

My area was without power for a bit over a week after hurricane sandy. It sucked, and day to day shit was more difficult, but nobody needed tens of thousands of dollars to cover themselves. Even with lost wages, having to drive far for gas and needing fresh food everyday, we’re talking like $3k maybe for a family to cover everything.

I think you are.... way misunderstanding the situation in Gary right now.

Uhh no actually, I experienced the same situation…

Again, my whole area was without power for more than a week after a hurricane

Specifically this one…

They’re going on two weeks in areas with high crime, boil advisories, debris still in the streets and sewage backing up. The first story I saw was a woman in her car at night talking about batteries and flashlights but she kept looking around and wanted to hurry the reel along in order to not draw attention to herself with the car light on.

I’m a diehard Batman fan but living in a place comparable to Gotham has got to suck.

2

u/IndependenceIcy9626 Aug 23 '26

Yeah I get that. I didn’t live in a high crime area, but the rest was my experience after Sandy. The situation really sucks. That’s not an excuse to take in 10x as much as you need.

Think of it this way. If someone started a charity to get mosquito nets to fight malaria, took in $25k, spent $3000 to get nets for their family, and then just pocketed the rest, would you be cool with that? Malaria is still a serious issue but the money here isnt actually going to the issue.

I wouldn’t care. If I didn’t donate, it’s not my money or my business, and if I did, it wasn’t an amount that put me out or had any strings attached. She lives in Gary Indiana. This is probably the largest lump of money she has ever seen and/or may ever see again and if it changes her life in a meaningful way, be it a car, relocating, a new house, helping her autistic kid, etc. then great. If she got millions then it would be nice to help others but $23K spread evenly is literally a couple of cents to everyone that’s affected anyway.

u/OpticalPrime35 Aug 23 '26

Yeah let's ask why someone needs 23k for their family for an unexpected blackout in the hottest part of summer and then turn around and condemn people for asking why someone needs to make 23k in 20 seconds like these billionaires do

0

u/IndependenceIcy9626 Aug 23 '26

You’re barking up the wrong tree. I’m very much against all the billionaires.

I’ve also lived through a prolonged blackout after hurricane Sandy, and know that if your house didn’t get structural damage, and the powers just out in your area for a couple weeks, then you’re just pocketing like $20k out of the $23k in donations.

I feel for the people in Gary, being without power and other services even temporarily sucks. I still don’t think it’s ethical to PROFIT off that from peoples donations.

1

u/OpticalPrime35 Aug 23 '26

It doesn't matter what you think

The people made 23k. Who are you to question if they need it.

Thats what the real issue is. You actually having an issue with someone getting 23k in donations to help them out during a bad time. B

You have already barked up the wrong tree with your first ignorant statement

-1

u/IndependenceIcy9626 Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

So you don’t care at all that they made like 10x in DONATIONS over the high end of what they’d need for the situation? And somehow I’m wrong for thinking that just pocketing that money is greedy? Ok bud

Y’all aren’t actually thinking about this at all. You saw what’s upvoted in the thread and hopped on that bandwagon to try to feel morally superior. Taking way more than you actually need from people’s goodwill during an emergency situation is not ethical. Defending that doesn’t make you the good guy, just wacky and gullible.

1

u/OpticalPrime35 Aug 23 '26

Nope

Because it was people's choice to donate to them.

The real crazy shit is you actually care people donated money to help them out.

Did they say " oh hey we are asking for this money to cure cancer while we are without power ". Nope.

What's funny is you want to think others aren't thinking about the situation or whatever lol. No we just don't give a shit that someone asked for help and people CHOSE to help them out and it ended up being a decent amount of money.

Attacking this doesn't make you smart or superior. It really just makes you a pathetic asshole

0

u/IndependenceIcy9626 Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 23 '26

I’m not thinking that yall aren’t thinking about. You aren’t. You switched from “how do you know they don’t need $23k?” to “I’m fine with them profiting off donations from this emergency situation”.

I don’t care that people donated money to help them out. I care that they raked in $20k more than they realistically needed, while everyone without a vlog got jack shit. Because that’s unethical.

You can call me a pathetic asshole if that makes you feel better, but that doesn’t change that you got caught with your pants down here. You started by implying I simp for billionaires, who make their money unethically by exploiting people and taking more than what’s fair. You’re now defending someone making their money unethically by exploiting people and taking more than what’s fair. So which is it?

You cool with it if I start a charity and just pocket 95% of the donations? People chose to give right?

Her roof repair, and water damage repair would cost half of that

u/BoredAsFuck7448 Aug 22 '26

It's GoFundMe, not ComeFundUs. It's unfortunate that other people are unable to set up similar support for themselves but having a social media following is a game changer.

27

u/iamPendergast Aug 22 '26

Like a functional government even?

18

u/BoredAsFuck7448 Aug 22 '26

Functional government? In the U.S.? What kind of nonsense is this? You'll get dystopian hellscape like the rest of us and you'll like it.

1

u/drsoftware Aug 22 '26

Like Communism? /s

2

u/iamPendergast Aug 22 '26

reddit doesn't know about /s sarcasm anymore it looks like 🤦‍♂️

36

u/picklerick2727 Aug 22 '26

I really hope she ends up with double the amount

2

u/Exterminator-8008135 Aug 22 '26

They just confirmed why she is right to hate the community.

It's as if i had lost food because of an outage, Ask a gofundme to buy food, It blows up and parasites think i owe them.

Man, Fuck y'all ! It's one of you who stole a large recycling trash can, that was distrubuted in small number 15 years ago because you think this belong to you when it's OURS.

But i will have my answer in 3 days, I will recognize it, and i'll have a few words with them.

2

u/Nelliell Aug 23 '26

Honestly, just repairing her roof is gonna take the bulk of that. $500-1K to replace any food that spoiled, even if she was to donate the rest to her community after taking care of her family's needs, it wouldn't be much.

1

u/0ceandrifter Aug 23 '26

Yeah, the roof repair is essential. They'll need mold remediation too
