Why not just say, hey no worries you both can work out today but next time bring a valid ID. Easy…

I went to gym once with a friend, and he thought he had a guest pass for me, but didn’t (he had limited uses per month)

We walked in, and they instantly said “it’s all good this time, just come with one next time” and that was that. Easy peasy, everyone happy.

This dad brought his son, had a guest pass, jumped through hoops to show that’s his son with the school portal and all.

And this manager makes a ruckus out of it for nothing. Absolute insanity. Literally everybody loses in this situation.

Clearly the point was for the black guy to lose out more but then he got uppity.

I only have the planet fitness normal membership (which only works on my home gym) but every time I travel I try to scan my code anyway on other gyms and the staff usually just let me work out without issues anyways.

Went to an LA Fitness once with a friend using his guest pass. They spent 10-15 minutes making me sign waivers and other paperwork before they’d let me in.

When you brought in your friend was he clearly over 18? If so that may be why. There may be a minimum age to be covered by insurance if something happens.

3

u/Tojaro5 Jul 27 '26

And that can't be explained to them because?

If there is a reasonable explanation of why this is simply not an option, then most people would accept that.

If it's just the missing ID, they could just let them in for that day and tell them to bring one next time please. That's the reaction i would expect in that case.

Calling the police is just unreasonable unless the situation actually escalates.

-1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Jul 27 '26

Who said it wasn’t explained to them?

This guy, by his own admission, was told that wasn’t an acceptable form of ID and he went in with his kid anyway.

If they could just let him in that day and tell him to bring it in next time then why do they need to a license at all? If it’s for insurance reasons that he needs to be a certain age they may not want to chance him getting hurt and suing.

Of course this is reddit so they love to point to race but unless I see his racist remarks or I see examples of him letting in white guests he doesn’t know with no id, that’s a leap.

2

u/Tojaro5 Jul 27 '26

I'm not talking about race, this is just a situation that wasn't handled properly.

If the question "Did you ask me to leave?" doesn't get a resounding "Yes we did!" as an answer in the presence of a cop, then i have to assume they did in fact not ask him to leave. Otherwise they would just say it, cop or not.

Which makes the "calling for cops" thing a "we skipped multiple steps of deescalation and went straight to the most extreme option" issue.

I don't know why those people behaved like morons in this case. If its the colour of the skin, the look of the face, if their breakfast was spoiled, whatever. Doesn't matter to me.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Jul 27 '26

By his own admission they told him his guest wasn’t allowed in, so yeah, they really did ask him to leave. Also they were literally telling him to leave in the video so I don’t know what you are talking about.

1

u/Tojaro5 Jul 27 '26

By his own admission they told him his guest wasn’t allowed in, so yeah, they really did ask him to leave.

So they told his guest to leave at best.

Also they were literally telling him to leave in the video so I don’t know what you are talking about.

They still called the cops first.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Jul 27 '26

Yeah, they told his guest he isn’t allowed in without an ID but his guest was clearly in the building lifting weights in the video.

So already he is shown to be belligerent and defy their instructions. All I’m saying is I would love to hear their side of the event.

0

u/crackanape Jul 27 '26

Ok but that hypothetical was never raised in the video or in anything posted by anyone there. You've invented it. It is not unusual for kids to be working out in gyms.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Jul 27 '26

Yup, a lot wasn’t raised in the video. That’s my point. You heard from one side who wanted people to sympathize with him. Since we only see his biased side (he’s not exactly a neutral third party) I am speculating on reasons.

1

u/crackanape Jul 27 '26

Sure, but you are inventing things from whole cloth. Maybe he took a shit on the gym floor. Maybe his kid was screaming that he was trafficked. Maybe maybe maybe.

We can only work with the evidence we have. In this case, that has been selected by one side, so it's going to be biased, and that means we can't take any of this too seriously, but it doesn't give us licence to manufacture history.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Jul 27 '26

And you are making a conclusion based on a biased testimony without getting the other side first. Is that any better? So many people are just jumping on them and doxxing them and some have mentioned leaving bad reviews when we just have one side of the story.

All I am doing is giving examples of where it may be a valid reason they needed an ID so we should reserve judgement and I’m the asshole.

1

u/crackanape Jul 27 '26

I'm not making any conclusion.

15

u/Visible_Bag_7809 Jul 27 '26

Obviously not the situation here, but I worked this job for a gym and the age of 18. Basically told rules were infallible and unbreakable and was kinda a nonce about it and certainly at that time wouldn't have let them in. But making those mistakes at that job at that age allowed me to learn and grow a lot and now I know how to be the easier bending rules when it's ok person I am today.

26

u/ILoveRawChicken Jul 27 '26

Nonce does not mean what you think it means.

10

u/OldChili157 Jul 27 '26

People seriously need to stop using British slang they don't know the meaning of.

2

u/Visible_Bag_7809 Jul 27 '26

Well I can only speak for how it was used in my hometown. We were a tiny but touristy island that got a shit load of European college students in the summer and they called everyone and anyone a nonce for every little thing. Became just how it was used where I'm from.

16

u/Dunklsta Jul 27 '26

what does nonce mean where you are from?

12

u/BioTinus Jul 27 '26

When growing up, i saw cartoons of people having to wear a dunce cap if they had been stupid. The first few times I heard people being called a nonce, I thought it meant the same thing. Only much later in life I learned that nonce means a kiddy diddler. Perhaps the other poster is the same.

2

u/BrosefDudeson Jul 27 '26

The nonce cap is basically the sex offender registry lol

1

u/reroll-life Jul 27 '26

Only much later in life I learned that nonce means a kiddy diddler.

TIL of this niche American slang.

By far the most popular definition is that of software engineering where nonce is short for "number once" as in a number (or these days any value) that can only be used once.

In British English it just means "a foolish person" though and in rare old-timey polite form it's used as a synonym for occasion as in merge of now + once as in "we're using this placeholder design for the nonce, then we'll replace it".

3

u/BioTinus Jul 27 '26

I believe only the British use nonce for pedo, but i could be wrong. All of your definitions were very interesting btw, so TIL too, thanks!

3

u/00wolfer00 Jul 27 '26

It definitely does not just mean a foolish person in British English. It's been used interchangeably with pedophile for decades in the UK.

2

u/TopiaryLoL Jul 27 '26

It's a British slang for pedo, has been for a long time

Source: 29 years of being British

1

u/ILoveRawChicken Jul 27 '26

This is not American slang whatsoever lol. Nonce isn’t used here and it means pedophile in the UK.

5

u/SickofROOM8s Jul 27 '26

I am also waiting for this reply lol

1

u/Visible_Bag_7809 Jul 27 '26

The townI'm from came to use it for just about everything, no specific definition. If I had to give it one it would be used for a person that did something, anything, without thinking it through.

3

u/my_nameborat Jul 27 '26

I have sympathy for the minimum wage workers but whoever called the cops was over the line. You either say “no we can’t make an exception, please return with an ID” or you allow them to workout and ask that they come with better ID in the future.

The cops are an unnecessary escalation to the situation

1

u/Gilinis Jul 27 '26

Why would you even require an ID for a guest to begin with? They arent a member and dont legally owe you anything, so why would you need their ID?

0

u/UncreativeTeam Jul 27 '26

Because gyms are dangerous, especially for minors. If you can't verify who the kid is, then how can you trust that the waiver he's signing will cover your ass?

1

u/A1000eisn1 Jul 27 '26

Except this is a relatively new policy that most gyms don't have. If it was that serious it would have already been in place and would be common.

Also, you don't need to see someone's ID for insurance reasons.

1

u/Ikentspelgoog Jul 27 '26

Because then the son gets hurt on premise, and then the father sues the gym for, I don't know insert reason here. And then the gym gets sued, and the employee that let them in gets fired.

2

u/A1000eisn1 Jul 27 '26

None of that would change if he had an ID.

1

u/ShawnyMcKnight Jul 27 '26

I think they have a pretty firm policy that you need an ID to work out. They told him that showing the school portal is not the right form of ID but he went in with his son anyway.

I'm guessing there's age minimums to use the equipment for insurance reasons and if the boy got hurt on the equipment and he was underage then the insurance company won't cover it and a single lawsuit can take down a gym like that.

1

u/Schnuribus Jul 27 '26

Which American without a drivers license would have a valid ID? Most people do not just have a passport… And a birth certificate wouldn‘t probe anything.

1

u/N3rdr4g3 Jul 27 '26

You can get a State ID, which is basically the same as a driver's license but doesn't allow you to drive. Most people don't get or know about them though because they just use their driver license instead.

New Jersey State ID

1

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Jul 27 '26

Why not just say, hey ok we didnt know so we will get some ID and come back tomorrow. Easy..

-2

u/BirdLawGrad Jul 27 '26

Because the courts don’t work that way. If the kid gets injured that’s a huge lawsuit.

Just follow the rules.

2

u/A1000eisn1 Jul 27 '26

The courts don't give a shit if the kid shows an ID or not. It's not a law. It's a recent policy for this specific gym.

If the kid shows ID and gets injured what's the difference?

He’s a minor with no driver’s license so the adult responsible for him gave identification. airports aren’t even this anal

5

u/vlad_thegod Jul 27 '26

The fitness connection around my house doesn’t even scan you half the time because they are so busy and a little too chill…
