I am curious whether other HPE Primera or former 3PAR customers have experienced something similar.
We currently operate two HPE Primera C650 arrays.
The successor systems have already been purchased from HPE and are under active support, however the migration is still in progress, so the original arrays remain in production.
A few days ago all PCBM batteries across both arrays simultaneously entered the state:
State: Degraded
Detail State: Expired
What I find unusual:
- all batteries still report ~97% charge
- all batteries report FullyCharged
- batteries have different serial numbers
- all batteries share the exact same expiration date
- all redundant PCBMs expired at the same time
- both arrays degraded at the same time
- we are observing performance impact
During research I found that this does not seem to be unique to Primera.
There are several older HPE 3PAR discussions where battery expiration dates, expired states and even the setbattery CLI command are discussed.
This makes me wonder whether this is actually a long-standing HPE lifecycle mechanism rather than a traditional battery failure.
What I struggle to understand is:
Why would all redundant cache protection modules have the same expiration date?
Why are expiration dates apparently not staggered?
Why would a highly redundant enterprise storage platform allow all redundant modules to reach a lifecycle-triggered degraded state simultaneously?
If InfoSight knows the expiration dates years in advance, why are customers not proactively warned?
The systems were under active HPE support for about 5 years and continuously reported telemetry data.
Neither we nor our HPE partner were aware that all PCBMs were effectively heading towards the same expiry date.
HPE support's current position is that a paid support engagement is required before they will answer any technical questions about the mechanism itself.
At this point I am less interested in fixing the issue and more interested in understanding whether this is expected product behavior and whether other customers have run into the same thing.
For anyone interested, I also opened a detailed discussion in the HPE Community:

Has anyone else seen this on Primera or older 3PAR systems?
