Bailing out all the US car companies back in 2008 was a mistake

Allowing them to remain independent was the mistake.

If they're so big that their continued operation is vital to the national economy, the government should have purchased them, not bailed them out. Then the (very minimal) profits could be related by the taxpayer while affordable cars were available for direct purchase.

Bailing out the banks instead of the home owners was a bigger mistake. Who went to jail for the Banks gambling.
