Kanji/Kana I bought a fan in a Japanese store and the cashier wrote my name on it

I told her my name was Juan Carlos and she wrote Juan as “Wan”, I was expecting her to do フアン (fuan) but I dont dislike this alternative tho as F or H dont accurately represent the sound they made when speaking. Also many Anglo people pronounce Juan as “one” 💀so thats a thing.

Kanji/Kana Sorting Kanji to learn by Parts

Post image

I've got a little project, and I'm looking for some feedback!

NOTE: After some great early feedback, I rethought what I was proposing. This is the new proposal; the original is below for posterity.

I'm about to dive into a new manga. I have a lot of vocab to learn, and something I thought would help is to learn all the new kanji first, so when I encounter a word, I at least I've seen its pieces, you know?

All the major systems build up kanji from parts. The image I posted above is the JPDB breakdown; RTK is very similar. Unfortunately, they have a fixed order, and that doesn't match what I'm reading. What's a #1000 kanji for RTK or WaniKani might be the most common kanji for what I'm reading. And when RTK introduces 忄 as an early radical, maybe it's better for this manga if I learn 反 first, because a lot of the kanji in what I'm about to read use it.

So what I'm looking for is creating a personalized study plan:

  • First, for your reading, here are the new kanji ordered by frequency
  • Second, here are the radicals to learn, in order of frequency. For each radical you learn, here are the kanji it unlocks.

So basically: I want to create a personalized lesson plan that works like RTK/WaniKani/KanjiDamage/whatever.

But before I get started, does anything like this exist?

While I'm happy to make the tool, I don't want to redo someone's work.

Question: Is this even a good idea? Would this be useful to anyone else on here?

ORIGINAL PROPOSAL:

I'm about to dive into a new manga. I have a lot of vocab to learn, and something I thought would help is to learn all the new kanji first, so when I encounter a word, I at least I've seen its pieces, you know?

What I REALLY want is to be able to feed the whole manga into an algorithm and have it tell me:

  • For your reading, here are the new kanji ordered by frequency
  • Even better: here are all the radicals / primitives ordered by frequency (so if 忄 is the most-used radical, start with it)

I want a study plan that's targeted toward what I want to read, not whatever order RTK or WaniKani or whatnot wants you to study. And I was thinking of making a tool to do that.

But before I get started, does anything like this exist?

  • Is there anything that gives you kanji frequency for a given manga / show?
  • Is there anything where you give it a bunch of kanji and it gives you all the radicals ordered by frequency?

While I'm happy to make the tool, I don't want to redo someone's work.

Question: Is this even a good idea? Would this be useful to anyone else on here?

Do you take notes to study later?

I just started getting stories to learn Kanji from a site but I started writing them down. (First pic) that way I can just reach for my notebook and read.

Other notes are for me to quiz myself. I’m still trying to find the best way to write notes.

Show me what you have

Kanji/Kana After 4 years of reviews every 1-2 days I completed Wanikani

Other than a period of time where I was very ill for 3 months I was doing reviews once a day for 60-75% of the time it took me to finish my journey. I have no problem reading kanji or new words from which they are derived and can read pretty much anything in Japanese immediately by looking at it naturally without a problem from originally knowing zero kanji when I started. I also learned a ton of new example words as well probably easily like 500+. Best purchase of my life since I started 25 years ago. Hope this inspires others that learning kanji can be fun and easy as long as you practice frequently!

Kanji/Kana Serious question "づ" pronunciation

Post image
2.1k Upvotes

So I was reading some japanese manga for studying purposes. The type of manga doesn't matter don't worry about it.

I found the hiragana づ, wich should be pronounced as "zu", translated as "du" on the cover in 気づいて.

Is this just a translation error? I'm wondering since I couldn't find anything on it online.

Serious question, thanks in advance!

At first I thought they spelled it wrong in hiragana すべる. Then I thought they spelled it right but with a mix of hiragana and katakana すバる

Kanji/Kana "kanji makes things harder to read" FALSE

Not me spending 10+ minutes trying to read this one line of dialogue. Is he saying Mayl is awake? Wait no that's おきる。Right so maybe he's annoyed that she came by and he's saying she "occurred"? I guess that makes sense but it feels off. おこる…おこる…おこる… OH SHE'S ANGRY, I GET IT

I really think most learners have a pattern of "ugh kanji is so hard" that eventually turns into "oh man why doesn't this text have kanji" over time. Although honestly this one wasn't hard I just need more reading practice in general

Edit: To all those saying I should have easily gotten this from context:

1) I did eventually

2) I am still a beginner, I'm not at your level

3) My point is that seeing 怒 would have eliminated any confusion, that's all.

I was noticing a lot of written puns and clever kanji swaps, so i started taking pictures of them. Here's what i got:

Outside a fish restaurant: 営魚中

in a noodle shop: 麺バー募集

at an abura soba restaurant: 油っしゃいませ

on an Asahi beer ad: お疲れ生です
