Where to Eat? 🍽️ Appreciation post for 40 highway and Blue Ridge Cutoff restaurants

I checked out the new Chicken Chaos at 40 and Blue Ridge Cutoff. It was great, you should try it. But I realized what an amazing corner it is for food.

High Boy for burgers

El Pulgarcito for Salvadorian

Mexican corner restaurant #2 for Mexican, with tons of vegetarian options

Dixons had been serving their chili for a hundred years

There are also several amazing food trucks, Carmen's,

And I hope Zabiha opens back up, great middle eaten food.

News πŸ“° A tree came through Gilbert Kirk’s ceiling in Kansas City, and six weeks later his living room was still open. A man saw it on TV, came with lumber, a tarp and a crew.

Travel/Road Trips 🚘 πŸ—ΊοΈ Most Unique AirBnB/Vacation rentals in the area?

In other places I've lived, I enjoyed taking small staycations at airbnb's that were unique in some way. Ones like RV's, boats, farms and other unique lodging. Just was wondering what everyone thought the most unique vacation rentals were around her and within a few hour drive. Thanks!

Housing Search πŸ πŸ”Ž Northland or Zona Rosa recommendations under $1,600 all-in)?

Looking for some real feedback on apartments up in the Northland around Barry Rd / Zona Rosa.

I'm currently in a studio downtown paying around $1,700 all-in. Working from home full-time in 590 sq ft has run its course, and I'm ready for more space and closer proximity to normal errands (Costco, Hy-Vee, AMC, etc.) without spending downtown prices.

My budget is around $1,600/mo total after rent, utilities, trash, internet, and all the random fees.

The two main places I'm looking at:

Manor Homes of Fox Crest - Really like the private attached garage and the 1-bed layout has a dining area that looks like it'd make a great dedicated desk setup. I'm leaning towards this one personally.

The Reserve at Barry - 2-bed under $1,300 base, which would give me a closed-door office. Plus Google Fiber is an option but It's an older build though.

Also open to other solid recs in the Barry Road area in that price range (already ruled out The Element and The Vintage). Have looked at places like Riverstone and The Element and while they're great, The Element was just too much $$$ and Riverstone had a layout that didn't work for my desk. I can really live anywhere in KC, as long as it's on the Missouri side. I'm still somewhat new to the area though overall and looking for around the Dec timeframe.

Visiting KC 🧳 Way to stay in Kansas City for cheap next weekend?

β€’ Upvotes

I live in Iowa and worked a food festival. While it was chaotic, I had a really good time and made good money. I'm thinking about asking the owner of the booth if she needs help at the next stop (KC) about 3 hours from me. If you know what festival, I actually had a really good time and there was some good food and cool merch. From my perspective I didn't find it that bad at all (I know there's a lot of hate circulating)

That being said, anyone know of any cheap lodging options in KC? I'm trying to convince my friend who did it with me this weekend to do it too so we could carpool. I have a bad back or I would try to just sleep in the car maybe and buy a shower at a truck stop

I'm looking for something less traditional. I know it can happen to any hotel, even the bougie ones, but I had a bad bed bug experience about 12 years ago after staying at one of the cheapest hotels in town that appeared clean. The reality is the cheaper hotels don't have as much money to mitigate the problem quickly and effectively. So looking for some alternatives other than a cheap motel, or if you guys know of any "fancier" or well rated hotels that offer discounts. Good airbnb deals, or anything else.

I been to KC a couple times and had a great time. Thanks in advance for any advice. Trying to find a way where this would make good financial sense πŸ€”

Attractions/Concerts 🎟️🎑 A word on Oktoberfest bar tipping: DON'T

EDIT: Some of the respondents have been able to provide additional insight on this. It sounds like maybe some or all of the "tips" do go to the nonprofit organizations, even if I haven't encountered anyone who was able to confirm that. I think the buckets should be relabeled as "donations" with a list of the organizations to whom that money will go to and not simply just "tips."

Original:

During this weekend's Oktoberfest at Crown Center Plaza, you'll find multiple beer serving areas with all of our smiling faces ready to get you where you need to be.

You'll also see a tip bucket that says cash or tokens are accepted. Aside from the fact that this is counter service with no personal service provided to you by us (and therefore not at all worthy of tipping) please know that we are all volunteers.

We are volunteering for the various organizations in which we participate. Our $15 an hour go to our organizations. Not only are we not allowed to handle cash, but nothing that has gone into those tip buckets will go to us. That's most likely going to be taken by KC Bier Co or maybe even stolen by the hired security that patrol the grounds through the night (if whoever's running that station forgets to check it.)

If you put tokens in there, you're just throwing away your tokens. You might as well throw them in the trash because they have no monetary value.

I can't stress this enough. If you're someone who insists on tipping unnecessarily, we will not see a single nickel of that money; you're just paying more for your beer. And that's dumb.

Local Politics πŸ—³οΈ KU and NKC hospitals are suing their patients

This is outrageous. Even giant for-profit HCA doesn't stoop this low to sue patients, garner wages, and put liens on houses.

More reason for universal healthcare. This needs to be a major priority.

Volunteering/Giving πŸŽ—οΈ Any y'all got chickens?

Are your yard birds bougie? Do they demand only the finest hardwood shavings for nesting material? If so, you're in luck. Over the next ten days, give or take, I will have at least one, if not two, 45 gallon bags of 100% organic hardwood shavings.

I am willing to give these hardwood shavings away. I have more than enough bougie hardwood mulch around my crib. Can't make the neighbors anymore jealous.

This will be only the finest blend of ash, cherry, hickory, oak, and walnut. Only the best for the most discerning of yard birds.

There is only one caveat. You must have the bougiest of yard birds. While I'm completely unqualified to make the decision as to whether or not your yard birds are bougie, I'm willing to give it ago.

I suspect replys to this post with pics of bougie yard birds is the only way to determine "level of bouginess."

As an side. I don't necessarily know that the "pet" flair is correct here. But, "food and drink" and "BBQ" while seemingly appropriate, felt insensitive.

Local Politics πŸ—³οΈ KCMO’s New Private Equity and Corporate Spending PAC

Edgar Palacios is now the treasurer for a PAC called Progress Kansas City that was just formed with 3 $25,000.00 and 1 $10,000.00 donation from individuals leading large corporations or private equity companies in the area with an extensive history of supporting right-wing politicians who intend to spend on Kansas City, MO elections. Two of these donations come from members of the police foundation board and two come from former Republican staffers.

KC Rants 😑 πŸ‘Ž Since when did pumpkin patches get so expensive?

I remember when KC Pumpkin patch went up to $18 and so we stopped going. Now every pumpkin patch around is $21-$24. Why are they all so expensive now?? Any reasonably priced pumpkin patches around with a good amount of activities that aren’t more than $20 per ticket to take my 10 year old to?

Ask KC ❔ Looking for someone with a drone to take a photo of my garden - Belton

I just put together a garden bed near our pond. I would love to get an aerial view of it that I can use to plan out where to put different plants.

Not looking for anything fancy - I just don’t have a ladder tall enough to get a good view!

Anyone with a drone and a camera able to swing by my place in Belton to take a few pics and send them to me?

Willing to pay!

First of all, I really love that the street signs are lit up, it made finding my way to CVS so easy on my walk

secondly, I'm a vegetarian for reasons to long to explain here, do y'all have any good recommendations for when I get fully settled for vegan and vegetarian friendly eats?

and yes, the title is a John Mulaney reference lol

Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 Dentistry recommendations for low cost periodontal care?

Hi, I’m 22 and have made some pretty poor choices regarding my own dental hygiene over the years and I have been dealing with bad mouth pain for a few weeks. Does anyone know of a lower cost dentist or one that takes payment options for potential periodontal? I really don’t want this to get worse and I have a little bit saved but looking at the prices online it seems insanely expensive more out of my budget than I can afford.
