Winter cycling

Hey all,

I got into cycling earlier in the year and would describe myself as a fairweather hobbyist. I'm just doing it for fitness and enjoyment, definitely not very fast or very fit.

Regardless I'd like to keep it going in the winter, and I'm wondering what most people do - indoor trainers or just layer up and go at it while it's bright?

I'd like to keep a schedule of 1-2 short rides midweek and a longer ride on the weekend. I've been thinking about a Zwift setup and some form of indoor trainer as it'll usually be dark when I'm finished work - although I do really enjoy being outdoors..

Any seasoned cyclists have some advice on keeping up the habit and staying fit over the winter?

Used bike for commuting

Looking for a used bike to cycle to work. I don't want to take my road bike because, well, it wouldn't be safe for the bike. I was thinking a hybrid with flat pedals. 58cm frame. €300 or so. Any suggestions other than DoneDeal?

Are there any lobby groups for Dublin cycling commuters?

I recently contacted my local Senator about the status of a stalled Active Travel scheme for the area and was pleasantly surprised by their engaged response, proxying my query to various bodies.

This did make me think: what impact could cyclists in Dublin have if they organised their lobbying more? We‘ve all seen the power of “squeaky wheels getting the grease“. For example, resident associations successfully torpedoing developments, bus lanes and new bike paths.

Roscommon town to Rathcroghan?

Was thinking of cycling from the train station in Roscommon up to Rathcroghan.

There’s a “táin trail cycling route” that suggests taking the N61.

Has anyone cycled that route?

I haven’t been in that area so I don’t know the roads but it seems like it would be terribly busy for a pleasant cycle but I’m happy to be wrong about that.

Stolen bikes from Carrickmines

Just wanted to post this here so people could keep an eye out. I know they're more than likely gone, but you never know. We had two bikes stolen from the shed in our garden sometime in the last two nights. A 2013 Trek Remedy 9.9 and a 2022 Trek Domane 4. The Remedy is a greenish brown color and the Domane is white. Unfortunately don't have a picture of the Domane.

Quick 2-Minute Survey: What Could Be Better About Bike Stands?

Hi everyone!

We’re a group of 3rd Year Mechanical Engineering students at Trinity College Dublin working on a design project around bike stands and bike locking systems.

We’re trying to understand what cyclists like/dislike about existing stands, what problems they encounter when securing their bikes, and what they feel is currently missing.

We’ve put together a very short survey that should take under 2 minutes. Any responses would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks!

Royal Canal Greenway status – Enfield to Dublin?

Planning to cycle from Enfield into Dublin 3 on a road bike.

Is it currently passable all the way from Enfield → Kilcock → Maynooth → Leixlip → Castleknock → Ashtown/Phibsborough, particularly the Deep Sinking and the Phibsborough–Ashtown section?

Happy to take short road detours where necessary, but would like to stay off-road as much as possible.

Thanks!

Irish cyclists wanted to test calmer bicycle routing in a free iPhone beta

Hi, I’m Robin, the independent developer of CalmBike. Ireland has just been added to the app’s routing coverage, and I’m looking for cyclists who know their local roads and can identify route choices that look fine on a map but feel wrong on a bike.

CalmBike is an iPhone bicycle-navigation app focused on calmer, safer-feeling routes. Apple Maps handles address search, while the actual bicycle route is calculated by my own OpenStreetMap/Valhalla backend. It compares alternatives using busy-road exposure, quieter roads, cycling infrastructure, surface and elevation.

The most useful test would be:

  1. Plan a trip you already know.
  2. Compare the CalmBike and Relaxed alternatives.
  3. Ride one if practical.
  4. Report unsuitable roads, odd detours or missing connections with the start, destination, selected profile and ideally a screenshot.

The beta also includes live navigation, ride recording, multi-stop and round-trip planning, saved routes, sharing, Apple Health, E-bike range estimates and community road reports. The interface is available in English, Dutch, German, French and Luxembourgish.

The TestFlight beta is free, contains no subscription and is currently capped at 50 testers. I’m looking for honest route and usability feedback, not ratings.

Has anyone any experience in cycling the GDMBR from Canada to Mexico? Would like to complete it sometime but not keen on doing it solo.
Thanks

Registration Plates

What is everyone’s opinion on the talks surrounding registration plates for cyclists? I think it’s one of the most outlandish things that has come out in recent times regarding bikes.

Helmet is an absolute non negotiable and fully support that. Hi-vis I’m a bit iffy about seeing as we already need to have lights on the bike.

Cycling near Killarney in October

As the title says, is it possible? Travelling and would love to get some road cycling in, I’m Canadian and ride at home as long as it’s above 0. Just a bit concerned about how wet it might be? Would appreciate insight 😊

Tubeless or not?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi,

I’m wondering should I stay running tubes, or do I switch to tubeless on my Trek 1.2 Alpha?

The roads in this country are absolutely abysmal, attached a photo as a reminder of how bad they are, with all the bumps and rocks jumping around, and it’s quite difficult to avoid inconsistencies in the road at speed.

Is there any benefit for me to switch to tubeless? I’m currently sitting around 6”4 96kg but getting lighter as the weeks go on.

Prescription cycling glasses for a reasonable price - recommendations please

Prescription cycling/sports glasses are outrageously expensive in the main outlets. I'm looking for a pair for less than €150 so if anyone knows a good online retailer sells prescription cycling glasses at around this price point (or less) I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Bike Painting

Hi,

I currently ride a Trek 1.2 Alpha road bike, paint is a little shabby and not my taste, wondering if anyone knows of anywhere, preferably in Leinster, that can re-paint / powder coat the metal on the bike?

Stolen Race Bike

Unfortunately my bike was nicked from a secure lockup in South Dublin in the last couple days. I'm keeping my eye on Facebook marketplace and adverts, but the guard have been completely useless.

It's a pretty unique bike, not sure it's a model that ever even made it to Ireland. Anyone have any advice? I know chances of ever seeing it again are slim.

Bike Fitter reccomendations Ireland?

Can anyone recommend a good bike fitter in Ireland? Preferably someone with experience fitting triathletes/endurance cyclists rather than just a basic bike shop setup. Happy to travel anywhere in the country for someone who’s worth it. Thanks!

Rent a Road Bike Cork City

Hi all -

I am traveling to Cork City to visit family but would love to do a few training rides while I am there. I am hoping to not have to bring my bike with me, and that I can perhaps rent a road bike in the city instead. Does anyone have any leads on a shop that has a service like this? TIA!!!

Bike carrier for estate car? Rental options?

Afternoon all.

I bought a new Merida Scultura Endurance 6000 recently. I have a G31 BMW 5 Series.

It has a pano roof and the glass in the boot opens so I'd don't think my bikebuzz rack will work.

Anywhere I can rent a carrier to get a bike down to Killarney for the ROK?

Also, anywhere that does an "intermediate" bike fit?

I don't really want to spend hundreds but would like to make sure I'm comfortable on the saddle.

Based in North Strand, Dublin. Thanks!
