What to do in Nuuk

Food in Nuuk

Dog sledding

Happens in Qeqertarsuaq, Ilulissat, Aasiaat, Sisimiut, Uummannaq, Upernavik, Qaanaaq. Depending on winter and snow coverage.

Snowmobiling

Sisimiut and Ilulissat have rentals. Nuuk does not because of the terrain being diffucult for new beginners and Insurance pricing being to high.

Skiing / Snowboarding

Nuuk, Sisimiut,Maniitsoq,Qeqertarsuaq

Cross country skiing : Most places when there is enough snow coverage.

Whales in Greenland

Best bet is Ilulissat from May until September. Whales show up all over Greenland.

Learn Greenlandic

But I want to learn Greenlandic by talking with a real greenlander!

Good luck. Most lurk on reddit.

Facebook is the way to go to get in contact with locals.

(Please send me a) postcard

Higher chance of getting one would to be ask in Facebook groups. Internationals in Nuuk or Nuuk Borger info.

Vuggestuer/Bornehaver

Hi! We may be moving to Nuuk from Copenhagen next year and I’m hoping to hear from parents who have experience with the vuggestuer and børnehaver there.

Which ones have you had particularly good experiences with, and why? Are there any you would recommend avoiding, or any issues you think a new family should know about?

I’d especially love to hear about things like:
• how caring and engaged the staff are
• staff turnover/staffing shortages
• communication with parents
• how much time the children spend outdoors
• activities and overall environment
• how they handle children who are new to Greenland or don’t speak Greenlandic yet (they do speak Danish)
• wait lists/how difficult it is to get a place

I’ve been looking at places like Mikisoq, Muku, Apisseq, Uiloq, Puiaq, Paannaat and Paarsisoq, but I’m very open to others!

I know experiences can vary a lot from child to child and year to year, so I’d really appreciate hearing both positive and negative experiences. 😊

Qujanaq!

Are there any cheap homestay oppertunities in Greenland?

Hello :))

Its been a dream of mine to visit greenland, and experience the culture and learn about the traditions of your island. I was wondering if there are any types of cheap homestays or cultural exchanges for a short trip of 1 week to either Nuuk or Illulisat, or some other major town that you guys can recommend. Since even the cheapest hostel in these towns are way out of my budget as I am a university student at the moment.

Society I spent a year making a movie about the North Pole and the Inuit role in its discovery - and was SHOCKED by the way explorers treated them. Robert Peary (aka the first to the Pole) violated Inuit women, stoled bones from their graves and sold Inuit families to American museums

The main story about the Inuit and Peary is in chapter 4 - and it gets even worse

Culture What's It Like in Greenland?

I'm an American, born and raised. My girlfriend and I are looking to leave permanently, but for now we're traveling. I saw the Secret Life of Walter Mitty a while back and have been obsessed with Greenland ever since. So far, I like what I see. But... I want to hear from the people.

What's it like living in Greenland? Politics, crime rate, job market, culture, food, pros, cons, daily life, etc.

EDIT: My girlfriend is black and a musl!m, for reference, so let me know if your perspective applies or if you see any of those.

Question Glacier tour in Qaqortoq

Hi everyone!

My friend and I are making a stop in Greenland on our way to the US

I would love to know what are the best things to do in Qaqortoq.

Also, I would love to do a glacier boat tour — any recommendations for a group we can join or a private person who can take us for a reasonable price?

Many thanks!

Culture Discovery of Viking Church Ruins in Greenland

The discovery of a skeleton reveals an unknown church from the time of the Norse settlement in South Greenland, not far from Erik the Red's residence. The discovery provides new knowledge about social development and power relations in Greenland at the time and may help explain why the Vikings left the island.

In case you missed it, Greenland Energy Company GLND oil stock is up 342% in the last 5 days... short squeeze ongoing

This might be a low effort post but it's something this sub should discuss. The stock of the startup oil company (that caused controversy and had its plans denied by regulators in Greenland) has risen from the dead since the announcement of the agreement between DK, GL, and US. If you missed that story just search "greenland oil" anywhere or have it summarized because it was a big story last month in particular.

Sentiment on this stock tanked to abysmally low levels and it was declared dead. People thought it would get de-listed from the NASDAQ because it was approaching $1.00. So, many started to short it. Then the news comes this week and it is soaring. It's after market at the time of writing around $6.95

One to watch and discuss. If this gets removed, I'll post it on the travel sub.

Politics There should be zero American military bases in Greenland.

I am Inuit (Inupiaq / Alaskan Inuit) and I strongly believe that there should be no American military presence in Greenland at all.

To start off with, their already existing base in Greenland both was created and is actively maintained via the violation of human rights. Thule Air Base was created by razing two Inughuit villages to the ground in 1953, Pituffik and Uummannaq. All of these residents were forcefully evicted and relocated, and the town of Qaanaaq was built where the families and their descendants now live. Uummannaq was returned to Danish control in 2003 but the Inughuit are still denied the right of return and are not allowed to use the area as traditional hunting grounds just as they did for hundreds of years before. Pituffik remains occupied by the US military. The former residents and their descendants in Qaanaaq want Thule Air Base to be dismantled and to be granted the right of return to Pituffik and Uummannaq for their traditional hunting grounds

Now, with the new upcoming base in Narsarsuaq and the new permanent American presence in Mestersvig, that is literally rewarding America for threatening to invade. When America first threatened to invade, the opposite should've happened, they should have kicked the American military out. If a country threatens to invade Greenland, their military should not be allowed in Greenland.

In addition, establishing a military base at Narsarsuaq directly threatens the safety of the residents. Just as Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam pointed out how putting the Joint Arctic Command military headquarters directly inside Nuuk is a direct threat to the safety of Nuuk residents and effectively turns them into human shields, the same applies to Narsarsuaq. When you build a military base directly inside a civilian town, that will effectively turn the civilian population of that town into human shields (although Aki-Matilda has been weirdly silent so far on this when it comes to Narsarsuaq).

And even if you ignore all of this, it is necessary to acknowledge the immorality of partnering with the US military. The US is currently waging a murderous imperialist war against Iran, a war in which civilians are killed at a rate 7 times higher than the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Per HRANA, at least 1,721 of the 3,684 known deaths in Iran are civilians, making the civilian death rate around 47%. Now let's compare that to Ukraine. 16,126 civilians have been killed in Ukraine according to the UN, and BBC News estimated around 200,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed, making the civilian death rate around 7%. It is just as immoral to partner with the US military as it would be to partner with the Russian military.

And it's important to acknowledge that the US government doesn't actually care about the Inuit people at all, given how we Inuit are treated in the US where we have no self-determination and Alaska Native nations have been reduced to literal corporations. When they say they respect Greenlandic sovereignty, they only respect it because they're not allowed to violate it, not because they actually care about it.

Looking for Audio books

Hey! I was wondering if anyone could recommend audio books about greenlands history/culture, in english or german, read by a human.

I love to listen to audio books once in a while, but its so hard to find anything related to greenland. And if I do, its usually about the current US politcs and not greenland itself

Politics What are the main differences between the current agreement and the 1951 one?

Ignorant outsider here, sorry if I'm asking the obvious. I'm just a bit curious but too lazy to go through the work of actually reading the official documents. I saw a summary here https://x.com/RnaudBertrand/status/2102606070694937075, does that seem accurate? Any bias, twisting, or important things missed?

And how much effect on hunting is this likely to have? My understanding is that the existance of the Pituffik base is already quite bad even before agreement, as it is located on good hunting ground and civilians aren't allowed to use hunting weapons within a certain distance of it. If it expands even more, I imagine it would be even worse. Are Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig also hunting grounds and/or located along animal migration routes?

Helt seriøst, hvor bundkorrupt er det ikke lige?

Hvorfor kan hun fortsætte i politik?

Farewell Ilulissat Airport!

Thumbnail

Today is the last time I used the soon to be replaced Ilulissat Airport.

I will miss that place… and the baggage claim belt that goes surprisingly fast. The French hot dogs upon request at the kiosk and the taxi stand that never has anyone taxis waiting for passengers. The lines that snake around and the beautiful bathrooms with good water pressure.

Those were the days!

Jokes aside, onward and upward if the new airport opens (4ish years late) in 5 weeks. Let’s see what happens!

I have been looking forward to the new airport for many years so it’s quite exciting if it actually happens and there are fewer hiccups than nightmare Nuuk.

Gap in affixes inventories accross inuit languages

https://mofo.oqa.dk has around a thousand entries for kalallisut affixes! Are they all distinct postbases? I just consulted the official Nunavut dictionary of affixes, and they have only 190 entries in total. I'm aware they must have left some rarer postbases out, but would you say kalallisut has so many more composition tools than inuktitut and other inuit languages? There is also the 738 pages dictionary of utkuhisalik postbases (I can’t access online)... Which inuit language is the most postbase-rich and word-compositionaly proficient? Why such a gap in data? (Please do not just ask AI, it’s pulling numbers from nowhere, that’s why I ask here.)
