Announcement Regarding low-effort posts & questions

Hey everyone,

Regarding these common posts such as: “what to do in Nicosia, what to do in ….” or other real estate and common tourist questions that can be easily looked up and have been answered before.

Please just report the post and do not engage in the comments, if you think the post should be removed. When there are multiple reports on a post, we receive a notification and can deal with them on a case by case basis. When you engage and start discussions we are more hesitant to remove the post as you all invested your time for a response and it would be counterproductive to remove them. At least thats what I would think.

If you have different suggestions on this topic let us know.

Marie Curie PhD at University of Cyprus: Is it worth it?

Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well.
I have been accepted for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie / Marie Curie PhD scholarship at the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. From what I understand, the funding is around 3400€/month gross before deductions, but I am still trying to understand the real net salary, cost of living, and overall experience.
I wanted to ask people who know Cyprus or have done a PhD there:
Is this opportunity worth it academically and professionally?
How is life in Nicosia for an international PhD student?
What are the negative sides of living in the Republic of Cyprus/EU side?
How expensive is rent, food, transport, and daily life?
Is it easy to find accommodation?
How good is the University of Cyprus for engineering/research?
Are there good opportunities after a PhD from Cyprus in the EU?
What should I be careful about before signing the contract?
Any honest advice, good or bad, would be really appreciated.
Thank you!

Help Hair in military.

I want to preface this by saying that I do want to complete the service. Anyways, throughout all my life my hair has been really important to me, and despite me being in a supposedly very very strict base, up until now (~70 days) by FAR the hardest moment has been losing my hair. My diokitis is i think planning to impose even stricter hair rules. Is there any way i can somehow get a piece of paper to not cut my hair?? Ill even compromise and say that ill keep the sides short. Im willing to do anything, i have contemplated asking my loxagos for like 50 days fyllaki for this. I am serious.

Any tips?? Thanks

Cypriots staying in Airbnbs in Cyprus wtf???

So I’ve got 38 reviews for my property as a host on Airbnb.

Apart from one booking that went a bit south, the rest had almost nothing but 5-star reviews.

Except ALL the Cypriot guests. Literally every single Cypriot review has been 4 stars.

On one of them? The guest complained because there was NO TV!!!

A TV that was never listed in the amenities. Never advertised. Never promised.

What exactly are you people expecting fs?

Am I missing some unwritten Cypriot Airbnb rule here?

Economy Never really understood Cyprus taxes and public finances? Neither did I. So I put them in plain words

I wanted to know what happens to my money after the payslip, and ended up deep in Eurostat tables. Three numbers I didn't expect:

  • The lightest tax on work, the heaviest on companies. Taxes and contributions take 26% of what a job costs here, the lowest in the EU. In Germany it's 47%, so maybe don't move there for the payslip. Company taxes bring in 6.9% of the economy, the highest in the EU. The state takes less from your pay and more from companies.
  • 37% of a liter of petrol is tax. 65 cents of every €1.73, and that's with the duty temporarily cut by seven cents. Every fill-up comes with a silent passenger. On a pack of cigarettes, it's three-quarters of the price.
  • Defense is the fastest-growing line. The 2027 budget bill takes the Ministry of Defense from €628m to €895m, up 42%, and almost all of the rise is in one line the budget doesn't itemize. Part of it is probably borrowed on a 45-year EU loan, so some of it will still be getting paid off in the 2070s.

Each of the three also splits people, and every story on Foroi sets out both sides, so for once you can argue with the right numbers:

  • Is the state too dependent on company tax? A success, because companies come here and pay, or too dependent, because it can leave as fast as it came.
  • Should fuel be taxed more, or less? Less, for cheaper fuel now, or more, to tax fuel by the carbon it emits. Cyprus has promised Europe the second, and keeps putting it off.
  • Should defense be borrowed? Yes, because a long, cheap loan spreads the cost, or no, because it's still debt, taken on while paying debt down.

Under each story there's a one-tap "Which side convinces you?". No account, no email, no newsletter pop-up. The results show once enough people have answered. Or make your case here. I'm more interested in the reasoning than the score.

Foroi: Cyprus public money, in plain words. It takes no side (not even in the comments), it isn't tax advice (please don't file your return based on a Reddit post), and corrections are logged in public. Free, no ads, in English, Greek and Russian.

Mind the VAT (from 12 October, not on your bread) 💶

Latsi - lost a ring today

Post image
8 Upvotes

I know it is quit helples, but me and my fiancé lost a ring today. It was silver and graves on the outside like the lord of the rings. Inside it was graves with our names "Kevin and Emely 02.02.2018"

Looked a bit like in the picture

It was on this location

https://maps.app.goo.gl/RAYN4UCgM78CgLHg8?g_st=ac

If someone find it, contact me. Of course you get a finders reward.

The ring is really precious to me. I've searched the beach for many hours, without a victory. Hopes are low, but it never stops.

Question Someone explain Taxisnet

Once again I have been reminded of how awful government resources can be, when I was asked to file tax returns via Taxisnet (ΤΦ 63). Who set this system up? Why are all the information pages BROKEN?

Am I expected to already have a taxisnet account? Or do I need to register? If I need to register, then what the hell is the unique registration number? Am I supposed to just HAVE IT?

Can anyone give me a short summary of how to access this God forsaken website?

Help Untrue noise complaints

I seem to have an issue with my downstairs neighbour regarding to noises. We live in an apartment building with five floors and I live above them. They have complained few times about how there is coming loud noise from my apartment. They have now called my land lady and she called me, angry. She said that my apartment has had loud music playing.

Here's the issue: I'm barely making any noise, no music playing at all. I've never during 14 months of living threw a party and I have quite silent hobbies in my home. I tried to explain that to her, but she doesn't believe me and believes I'm the problem. She talked something about the police and told she doesn't want to have any issues with me and seemed very hostile.

I've talked with my neighbour before, since they sent me a very aggressive letter about the noise. The conversation in my opinion was very fruitful, and we came to understand each other. They talked how my walking is too loud (?) and I've tried to be more considerate after that.

I'm honestly speechless and don't really know what to do with the situation. Because how on earth you can prove that you don't make any noise? I'm a (legal) female immigrant myself and my neighbour is Cypriot to my understanding, so I don't know if there is some underlining hostility. I've been considerate and just trying to live here in peace.

Does anyone here have advice, or any similar experience they would like to share? I will probably go speak with my neighbour again tomorrow and hope this would clear the air.

Health & Fitness in Cyprus

Kalimera, or Kalispera!

What are your thoughts on the Health & fitness industry in Cyprus? I regularly travel to Cyprus and see PT’s and regular gym goers and it seems to be more and more popular now each year I go to Cyprus.

From an outsiders view, it seems that from what I’ve seen, the PT’s aren’t great and very few people know what they are doing (how to train)

The reason I ask is, is this an industry I could get into if I decide to move to Cyprus in the near future. I love helping people and have a good knowledge of training and nutrition but would this be a worth while profession to get into?

Please give me your thoughts. I speak fluent Greek.

A friend told me that he used to Pame app and it reliably showed bus stops and timings.

Is this stilll the case? And if not, what can I rely on? Google maps? Or is there a better alternative? Thanks!

Best places to rent bikes and cycle in nature around Paphos?

Hi! I’m visiting Cyprus soon and I’d love to spend a day cycling somewhere with beautiful nature and scenery around Paphos.

I’m open to anything — forests, parks, countryside, mountains, coastal paths, nature trails, etc. I’m more interested in beautiful/peaceful places and an enjoyable experience than hardcore cycling or difficult MTB trails.

A few questions:

Where would you recommend going for a really nice nature cycling experience around Paphos?

Are there places where we can rent mountain bikes or e-bikes?

Would you recommend a normal bike or an e-bike?

Are there any particularly scenic routes that aren't just the typical tourist recommendations?

Can rental companies deliver bikes somewhere, or would we need to transport them ourselves?

Is it better to do this independently or join a guided cycling tour?

Any specific rental companies, routes, parks, villages, or hidden gems you'd recommend?

I'd especially love recommendations from people who have actually cycled around Paphos/Cyprus, rather than generic travel websites.

Thanks! 🚲🌿
