[GUIDE] How to install Windows 11 on your Intel Mac

After seeing many posts asking how to install Windows 11 through BootCamp, I decided to make a clear and concise guide to walk new users through the process.

Please keep in mind that this method is used specifically because it supports the BootCamp assistant, keeping the installation process as close to "stock" as possible (besides the programs we use to end up with Windows 11). There are other methods to install Windows 11 on MacOS, but I believe this to be the easiest.

  • Step 1: Installing Windows 10
    • Download a 64 bit Windows 10.iso from Microsoft here.
      • (TIP) Download the .iso directly on your Mac in MacOS or on a PC running Linux. If on Windows, the link above will lead you to use Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. The tool works just fine, it is just much more annoying than a direct download to the .iso (which MacOS/Linux would provide to you instead).
  • Step 2: Install Win10 through BootCamp
    • Follow the basic instructions provided by BootCamp. If you run into trouble, please refer to Apple's official guide here.
      • Some older Mac’s require the Win10.iso be burned to a USB drive. If this is the case, BootCamp Assistant should take care of burning the .iso for you.
  • Step 3: Configuring Windows
    • Once Windows is installed, Apple's BootCamp drivers should automatically start installing. If not, please refer to Apple's official guide here.
    • Open BootCamp Assistant (in Windows) and set Windows as the default boot Operating System. This can be changed later to fit your preference.
    • Go to Settings (in Windows) and download/install all updates.
  • Step 4: Installing Windows 11
    • Download and run MediaCreationTool.bat from here.
      • For those of you who are not GitHub savvy, at the GitHub page, press the file named “MediaCreationTool.bat” and then press the download button.
      • If you have issues running the .bat file, try right clicking it and press open as Administrator.
    • Follow the prompts and select Auto Upgrade.
      • Basically, press 1 every time it asks for input. This will automatically select the version of Windows 11 that matches your current Win10 installation.
    • Allow the program to go through its process. Stay with the computer while it does this to make sure it does not sleep.
  • Step 5: Update Windows 11
    • Once again, go to Windows settings and download/install all updates. Enjoy!
      • At this point, you can change the default boot Operating System to whatever you want. I always set it to Windows while performing Windows updates so that the updates can install smoothly.

I hope this guide was helpful. If you have any questions or recommendations regarding this post, please leave them in the replies. Thanks!

Please note that Boot Camp currently does not support Apple Silicon Macs (M1/Pro/Max/Ultra and later)

Intel-based Macs (released from 2006-2020) are currently the only Macs supported by Boot Camp.

Running Windows under a virtual machine is possible however with a free solution such as VMware Fusion or UTM, or a paid solution such as Parallels Desktop for Mac.

Many Windows games and applications can also be ran using CrossOver or Apple's Game Porting Toolkit (GUIDE).

For running other operating systems as a separate bootable system such as Linux or OpenBSD on Apple Silicon devices, we refer you to r/AsahiLinux and the Asahi Linux website for more info.

MacBook Air 2017 with windows 11!

hey all!

so i was using sequioa setup (ofc the latest) and it was a LAGFEST, but 2 days ago, i installed windows 11 pro (using windiskwriter for mac) with drivers from bootcamp (which was about 2.2gb) and its much better!

you don't get the lagfest you get in sonoma/sequioa, and also you can stream up to 4k with no issues!

storage might be a issue for 128 gb laptops, so i have an external hhd for times.

better than macOS which would lag so much!

overall a nice setup seeing the laptop perform better in such times.

Here are some photos.
PS- trackpad gestures don't work out of the box, so you would need https://github.com/imbushuo/mac-precision-touchpad/releases.

this will majorly fix all the trackpad issues!
Cheers

Got it

--------------

Upd:

Brightness OK

Sleep: ok, but training eDP missing

------------

BREAKTHROUGH!

I fixed brightness control and sleep through an ACPI patch.

Now there’s only one thing left: extracting and verifying all the monitor parameters. Once everything is tested and confirmed, I’ll write up a proper guide with all the instructions.

It looks like Apple implemented the ACPI path specifically for the AMD GPU, while the Intel iGPU was basically left without it.

iGPU for everyone is getting closer! 😄

"Unable to read the Windows partition" error

I am trying to install Boot Camp for the first time, but it shows me an error when I click Continue. It says, "Unable to read the Windows partition. Boot Camp Assistant was unable to verify if the Windows partition contains a Windows installation. This may be because BitLocker is enabled on the partition. If so, disable BitLocker on the Disk before removing Boot Camp." Please help!

If it helps, I shows this when I type "diskutil list" in Terminal:

GitHub - Osaul4ik/apple-t2-touchid-windows: Experimental Apple T2 Touch ID for Windows.

I’ve finally brought the project to its first alpha release.

T2 TouchID for Windows is an experimental project that brings Touch ID support to Windows on Intel MacBooks with the Apple T2 chip.

🧪 Again: This is an experimental alpha release.
The current implementation has been tested on a 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro with T2.

At this point, the project can communicate with the T2 Secure Enclave and Touch ID sensor and use fingerprint verification through the Windows biometric stack.

What currently works:

  • 👆 Fingerprint verification on real hardware
  • 🔓 SEP unlock on cold boot
  • 🪟 Windows Hello integration
  • 🔑 macOS user.kb import
  • 🔒 Optional power-button lock workflow
  • 🖥️ GUI for setup and configuration

There is still a lot to improve.

The drivers are unsigned, so Test Mode is required.

I’d really appreciate testing and feedback from anyone with an Intel MacBook with T2, especially different models and years.

I don’t know yet if it will work on other T2 Mac models, but it should.

Use it at your own risk. This is still an experimental project, and I can’t guarantee that it will work correctly or safely on every system.

I Installed Windows 10 on my headless macbook with an external screen.

After weeks of trying I finally managed to get the Windows setup show up on the external screen and do the setup normally on my headless 13inch macbook pro 2016 😭😭😭

The bootcamp did not work for me as it fails to display anything after the windows logo on an external screen. So I had to make a custom modified windows iso with drivers and custom scripts to get the drivers working right away in the setup mode and after the install.

I went through over 20+ custom modified iso to finally get it working 😭

I used Ventoy vimboot to get it working, so it does not need the bootcamp assistance to get it ready.

I am planning on working on a ISO patcher to make it work for others aswell and wanted to know if anyone is interested in this fix / help with the testing for other Mac Models.

How to install Windows 11 on T2 Macs without bypassing the Windows 11 requirements

Here’s how to install Windows 11 on T2 Macs without bypassing the minimum requirements (in fact, make to meet them instead):

  1. Install Windows 10 via Boot Camp Assistant as usual
  2. Buy and Install FlexTPM here: https://flextpm.com/pricing/ - this is similar to TPM2.0 that you’d find in VMWare Fusion or Workstation
  3. Now, you can upgrade to Windows 11 just like on any other PC via Windows Update

No registry workarounds required, and it’s a lot more safe, you can get like this feature updates without writing GPO policies for target releases yourself - instead, it’ll work as if you have a computer that meets those requirements.

“A media driver your computer needs is missing…” (PLEASE HELP)

what am i supposed to do here?
i made the installer using Bootcamp on sequoia (2014 mac mini), the drivers are on the usb drive and it boots from it fine, but it acts as if the usb drive is some mystery partition and it needs to format it (…even though it just booted from it perfectly fine???)
so far i’ve tried checking for the drivers, they were fine, i checked the format, it’s exfat, i even remade the entire windows installer.
nothing as worked, and google results are all useless (either doesn’t fix it or isn’t on a mac).

Troubleshoot: MacBook Air 2020 (T2) reboots instantly at "Copying Windows files (0%)" — every ISO, every reset

I'm trying to install Windows 10 on a MacBook Air 2020 (Intel, T2), and I'm stuck at the exact same point every time. Boot Camp Assistant itself runs fine: it partitions, copies the files and reboots into Windows Setup. I get through language, edition and partition selection without issues, but the moment Setup reaches "Copying Windows files (0%)", the Mac reboots instantly.

I've tried several different Windows 10 ISOs, done SMC and NVRAM resets, run First Aid from Recovery and removed and recreated the Boot Camp partition each time.

Any idea pls? Im going crazy

Audio Stuttering

So bascially, Whenever I connect my Beats Studio Pro to My iMac (5K Retina, 27-inch, Late 2015), Intel Core i5 8 Cores 3.2 Ghz, AMD Radeon R9 M380 updated to the latest version it goes, 1TB of Fusion Drive Storage with MacOS 12.7.6 Monterey and Windows 10 22H2 being divided equally and finally 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, My headphones would just display the audio very lagging and corrupted and I just don't know what to do. I tried asking AI, searching online but nothing works. The audio when it isn't connected works fine it just when it is connected it acts up and I don't know what to do no more. I tried updating my bootcamp device drivers in device manager to their latest version that still didn't do the trick. So if anyone could help, It wouuld be greatly appreciate👍.

I wanted to install Windows 10 on my MacBook Pro 15 2019 via Bootcamp, using the Windows 10 version from the Microsoft website. The Mac rebooted, and an error appeared. I updated the Mac OS, tried different versions of Windows, tried installing from a USB drive — no result. Please advise what I should do.

ERRROR 0x0 Office 365 (Solucion)

Partitioned 2019 imac wont give me option to boot in Mac

HI, Trying to trade in old 2019 imac. Is partitioned with bootcamp. Looking to uninstall bootcamp and restore to factory settings. Computer will not let me boot into Mac, only shows Windows after pressing Option (⌥) to get to Startup Manager. Disk Utility is showing Mac HD, with Bootcamp greyed out beneath it. Bootcamp is unmounted but disc utility wont let me mount the volume. Partition still showing split between Bootcamp and Macintosh HD.

Attempt to reboot into Mac from Windows Bootcamp menu only reboots it back into Windows. Boot Camp Control panel does not open.

Unsure how to proceed. Any help appreciated. Thanks so much!

i need help with the overheating problem on my macbook pro 16" 2019 - THANKS!

hello, i have a macbook pro 2019 16" and i do gaming on it, and it overheats so bad which make my performance worst. i tried EVERY possible way to fix this: i play on bootcamp with a customized amd software(adrenaline version), i use throttle stop, i installed the mod with the thermal paste inside the macbook pro, i use of course mac fan control i tried many cooling pads, even the KLIM Turbofrost max which is one of the strongest over there but it didnt cool even few degrees, and i even bought just a normal stand for computers, like the one that folds so that the mac sits in the air, but none of this solution except throttlestop works because the mac still reaches around 65 degrees while gaming (or even more). if somebody know a better solution, a perfect cooling pad for macbook pro that works with this mod that i installed, or something PLEASE let me know! im desperate! thanks
