Weekly r/Birding Discussion, October 03, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

Just spotted this little creeper on my car’s back tire in Cambridge, MA. I’m guessing it’s hurt? So strange, and so glad I didn’t drive off without spotting it. Hoping it moves once I turn in the car…

I’m kind of glad they did.😁

All this action was thanks to a Cheetah taking a Thompson Gazelle earlier in the morning. Jackals and big birds cleaning up the scraps. Original content by me, Mara North, Kenya 2026

📷 Photo Stumbled into a Great Horned Owl encounter while walking my dog

My partner and I were walking our elderly dog and while she was sniffing some grass for a potty spot my partner told me to look up and bam it was right there. We’ve seen this owl in our neighborhood before up in a nearby tree from afar before but I couldn’t believe they let us get that close without any warning or flying off. I knew better than to make direct eye contact and that we needed to get our dog further away but I was able to snapped this picture over my shoulder in selfie mode while we gave them more space. Even though it was brief it was so exhilarating.

It's the neighborhood they grew up in. I wonder if they will leave for the winter or stay. If they leave will they return or settle elsewhere? I'll put up more houses just in case.

Spotted this gorgeous Steller's Jay a few weeks ago up Big Cottonwood Canyon at Donut Falls in Northern Utah while I was stopped to eat lunch. These guys are definitely some of my all time favorite birds.

Edited to fix mispelling. Can't change the title though.

📷 Photo I used to wonder why they were called ‘green’ herons. Now I see it just takes the right light.
